    Aston Bull? Red Martin?

All the talk in the paddock over the last few days has been the upgraded Aston Martin and whether the car is just a little too close on the nose to the Red Bull.

    You can read more here.

However, Saturday qualifying (sort of) put that argument to bed, as both Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel were shown the door in Q1.

Vettel's radio message when he was informed he'd just missed out on Q2 was less than cheerful.

Fernando Alonso, speaking to Sky Sports: "There is nothing to lose. We will be aggressive."

On the Spanish crowds: "It is amazing. Hopefully Carlos can give something extra starting at the front."

  3. 'It's great and promising'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

It was double celebration for Haas on Saturday as both drivers will start in the top 10 today.

Keven Magnussen, along with Max Verstappen, was another victim of a dodgy DRS and could only dream of what the outcome might have been had he been able to open the car up to its maximum potential.

Andrew Priestley: Reliability (or the lack of) will be a big factor this afternoon. The searing Spanish heat coupled with the teams and drivers still getting to grips with learning the capabilities and limits of their new generation of cars.

History says if you get it on pole here you are in the prime seat.

But the difference this year we have two cars who are similar in the lap times they generate but they do it in very different ways.

The Ferrari has a lot more downforce and is quicker in the tight and twisty bits whereas the Red Bull makes up a huge amount of time in the top speed in the straight.

In Barcelona Sector Three is very slow and Ferrari love that. Sector One has the long start-finish straight and has the DRS zone.

If Max can hang onto the coat tails in the opening laps there's nothing to say he won't be able to find his way past.

Mick Schumacher's car was on fire, literally, during third practice yesterday, which meant it was a stressful few hours for the Haas team to get the German driver ready for qualifying.

And what a great job they did, as Schumacher made it into the top 10 shootout for the first time in his career after Lando Norris' deleted lap.

Meanwhile, team-mate George Russell put his upgraded car onto the second row in fourth - Mercedes' best qualifying position so far this season.

Although Russell said the Silver Arrows "didn't have the tyres in the right window" there was still positives to take from the session.

He added: "We were quickest in sector one and struggling in sector three. Ferrari looked extremely fast this weekend but we have a better race car than a qualifying car."

Groundhog day for Lewis Hamilton over at Mercedes.

The seven-time world champion said he was "super happy" with the progress made by the Silver Arrows on Friday but 24 hours later, it was back to the grind on struggle street.

"The car has potential to be third or fourth and I am not able to pull that out of the car," said Hamilton, who starts sixth.

"I just don't feel that great in the sense of my driving and I'm working as hard as I can.

"I am still way off. I just struggle with confidence in the rear of the car. I don't know how to get around that."

    Penny for your thoughts, Lando?

The McLaren driver had his final lap in Q2 wiped out for exceeding track limits and according to Norris, he's not been feeling in peak physical condition this weekend.

His first job from P11 will be to try and shift past Mick Schumacher's Haas. Next up will be team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who starts ninth.

So far this season Ferrari haven't beaten Red Bull and Verstappen to the race win [because of Red Bull's reliability issues]. I am being flippant because there were times Leclerc was going to win anyway if Verstappen hadn't retired but it still remains to be seen. It is all very good having this pace on Saturday but no use if you can't convert on Sunday.

It is going to be a really interesting race. Mercedes may not have been as quick in qualifying as some thought they would be but they are still going to be trouble.

The home fans get to see one of their own on the second row as Carlos Sainz qualified in third place for today's Spanish Grand Prix.

"It's a decent position to start," said the Ferrari driver.

"I think the key will be the start, the tyre management, see if we can get a good start and go from there.

"I think anything can happen and we will try our best."
