The Red Bull has been struggling to find balance in the car this weekend and Max Verstappen was left to ponder what might have been if he had been able to push for pole.

"It’s always difficult to tell but I couldn’t do my final run, either the DRS didn’t open or I just lost power," said the Dutchman straight after qualifying.

"It’s a bit of a shame but I think overall, to be on the front row for us here, looking at the whole weekend so far, I think it was a good achievement, but of course, I would have liked to go for that final run."

All six drivers from top three teams have two new sets of medium tyres and one hard for the race. Charles Leclerc is alone in having a new set of softs, after doing Q2 on used tyres. "I just wanted a new tyre to start the race. This is what I was thinking at that time," he said.

Leclerc's lap at the end of qualifying was tremendous. It was so much quicker than Q1 or Q2. Maybe it was the most impressive pole position lap of the season so far.

"It went extremely well. I had a bit of a moment but I made it stick. It was a very good lap and the car was amazing too, so very, very happy."

Is there more despair on the horizon for Verstappen?

It's all hands to the pump in the Red Bull garage as the mechanics frantically work on the rear wing of the Dutchman's car.

DRS problems again? We'll keep you posted...

    Phew!

It looked like pole was all but gone for championship leader Charles Leclerc when the Monegasque driver spun on his first lap of final qualifying.

With the clock ticking down and the chance of top spot fading, Leclerc found a peach of a lap in his Ferrari backpack and produced a 1:18.750.

Verstappen's misfortune obviously helped a little, too.

Charles Leclerc has a wounded bull by his side for today's Spanish Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen suffered a loss of power on his final lap in qualifying on Saturday to allow the Ferrari driver to recover from his mishap and grab a fourth pole position of the 2022 season - and 13th of his career.

Will Leclerc reign in Spain? Or can Verstappen make it three race victories on the bounce?

Only one way to find out...
