Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and took control of the World Championship after an engine failure on Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.

Leclerc's second engine-related retirement from the lead in three grands prix leaves him trailing Verstappen by 34 points, despite six pole positions in eight races.

And it continues the impression that Ferrari's season is falling apart after such a promising start as Leclerc's team-mate Carlos Sainz also failed to finish, following a hydraulic failure.

Verstappen led team-mate Sergio Perez to a Red Bull one-two, as George Russell took third for Mercedes, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton fighting back to finish fourth.

Andrew: George Russell is going to be a serious contender when he is eventually given a race-winning car. His consistency has been quite something to behold so far this season while he proved in Barcelona that he can wheel-to-wheel with the beat on the grid.

Ferrari's Baku woes means the Scuderia are now 80 points behind Red Bull - who are on 279 thanks to their mega haul today - in the constructors' standings. Third-placed-Mercedes are 38-points off Ferrari's tally with 161.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, speaking to Sky Sports, after the team's double DNF: "Certainly it is a concern. Reliability is always a key factor in the battle - as well as the performance.

"We're not fully reliable but the team will stay focused, try to address the issues and to be stronger on the future.

"We need to understand what happened today. Not all issues are the same. It will take time to analyse. We don't know the issue yet.

"On the issues other teams with Ferrari engines suffered: We need to analyse those ones. I think one is not to do with our supply components. We'll look at the issues but it's more to have technical feedback."

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz speaking to Sky Sports on the engine issue that forced his early retirement: "The hydraulics went in lap eight or nine and that is it. It's a shame because I had taken care of my tyres and I was about to start pushing. As soon as I did that this happened - the hydraulics went.

"So far, the season is not going my way.

"I don't know if my car has had this problem before - I don't think so.

"We know we need to improve, we have been pretty good with reliability from my side, but we have just been incredibly unlucky with one thing or another.

"From my point of view, I can't seem to do two consecutive races without something happening. It's a shame but we are a team and we are going to stay united because I am sure better days will come."

A dreadful day for Ferrari in Azerbaijan. The debrief is going to be a tough one.

Mercedes' George Russell on finishing third: "As we said before you have to be there at the end to pick up the pieces and thanks to all the guys to get the car to the end. Not easy this year with everything that is going on. The cars are going through a torrid time with the bouncing - so pleased to get it to P3."

More from Sergio Perez on being told not to fight against team-mate Max Verstappen: "I think it was the right call by the team because at that time Max was a bit further ahead. It’s a good team result.

"In this place anything can happen. At the end of the day we managed to do a one-two so it’s a great team result."

Red Bull's Sergio Perez on finishing second: "Unfortunately we missed the virtual safety car stop - there was some miscommunication and in the end it was a bit too late. We were a bit unlucky there because that would have made our race when we were leading.

"The degradation was extremely high on that medium tyre, it is something we have to understand what happened there because certainly Max was a lot stronger today on that medium stint.

"There are a lot of things we have to review from today but still a very good team result."

Race winner Red Bull's Max Verstappen on his victory after retiring whilst in the lead last year: "You can never make up for what we lost last year, but today we had incredible pace in the car and we could look after the tyres and chip away at it.

"We were a tiny bit lucky because of the retirement but nevertheless our car was really quick today, so I could have closed that gap, then you have a race on your hands.

"Overall, really happy with how the balance of the car was today.

On what clicked today: "I don't know - maybe tyre behaviour and general grip of the car? That's what you need around here so you can look after your tyres. To have a one-two as a team as well, it was a really good day for us."

On the next race in Montreal: "Every weekend is a bit different. You really have to be precise - it can swing around every race."

How does Charles Leclerc pick himself up after this? Four consecutive pole positions and not a race win from any of them. Mercedes' George Russell, in fourth, is only 17 points behind the Monegasque driver in the championship.

Ferrari jubilation in Bahrain and Australia seems like another lifetime ago.

Antony: Hope Hamilton is ok, looked really sore getting out of the car. Mercedes really need to get on top of the bouncing.

Jeremiah: That looks so painful for Lewis. Struggling to get out of his car with the back pain. Mercedes need do something or FIA should force them.
