Lewis Hamilton said he was "incredibly disappointed" himself after yesterday's mishap in Q3 and later on Friday, he took to his Instagram to write a message to his Mercedes team.

"Today's crash was heavy on the heart because there are few feelings worse than letting the team down," Hamilton wrote.

"So many people come together and work incredibly hard to get us out on the track, so to the entire team, I apologise for the extra work I've caused today.

"We've never been afraid of hard work, that's what makes us champions. I'm proud to be part of Mercedes, let's go."

Friday was mission complete for Max Verstappen as the world champion pipped the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to pole position with his final lap of qualifying.

Just like the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in April, Verstappen will head the field for another sprint race this season.

The big story of the session, however, was not one, but two Mercedes crashing out in Q3.

Lewis Hamilton was the first to lose it with an uncharacteristic mistake through Turn Seven on his first flying lap. Hamilton's team-mate George Russell was the first driver out when the session was restarted, only for him to also make a mistake, this time at Turn 10.

The stands were packed with orange T-shirts - and some fans dressed as carrots - to cheer on Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring and the Dutchman didn't disappoint his loyal followers.

Verstappen set an impressive pace in the opening session and ended the hour 0.255 seconds quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes' George Russell was third, the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez was fourth and Russell's team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished fifth.

The session featured two red flags, one while Lando Norris' McLaren was removed after breaking down after Turn Four, and a second because of debris on the track.

It was a difficult session for McLaren. Norris most of the running due to reliability issues, while Daniel Ricciardo was DRS problems.
