Max Verstappen's serene march to a second title continued with a comfortable victory in an eventful Dutch Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver had to pass Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes after a late safety-car period to take his 10th win in 15 races this year to extend his lead to 109 points.

Hamilton was left fuming after Mercedes failed to change his tyres during the caution period.

That left him vulnerable and allowed team-mate George Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to pass him after the restart to take the other podium places.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz tells Sky Sports his view on the race today and the very late pit stop call from the team.

He said: "Everything that could happen, happened. It was a very bad day.

"It was clearly a bit too late but we need to keep analysing these cases and keep improving on the team because we keep costing ourselves some points and we need to see why.

"If we want to have a shot at next year then we need to keep improving these things, make the mistakes this year to get them better."

  6. 'We can win' - Hamiltonpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

Lewis Hamilton speaking after the race: "I think we had a car to win. Given the circumstances we were challenged with lots of things, the safety car, the virtual safety car.

"The strategy and car have been so good today, the pit stops were the best.

"I was really hopeful we'd get a one-two together as a team but the safety car really didn't help and I was on the edge of breaking point with emotions so my apologies to the team. I just lost it or a second but I think they know there's just so much passion.

"I want to look at it as a glass half full. Without the safety car I think we'd have been challenging at the end for the win. If this can be the same in the future races we can breathe down their necks and get a win.

"Last race we were miles away and we couldn't even understand how we could be so far away. Yesterday I was pole up until the last corner. There's a huge positive to take from that and our race pace seems to be better or as good as everyone else so let's not give up."

  8. 'Like dad has won a race' - Verstappenpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

Max Verstappen has said it's like his dad, Jos, has won a race today as the Dutchman was wearing a tribute helmet to his former F1 driver father.

The Dutchman adds he is confident he would've caught both of the Mercedes, even if George Russell had stayed out and acted a rear gunner for Lewis Hamilton.

  9. 'I think it's really promising what we are showing as a team' - Russellpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

    George RussellImage source, Getty Images

George Russell told Sky Sports post-race: "I thought we had pace, I thought we genuinely had a chance to fight for victory and sorry for Lewis, he did a great race and as a team we probably deserved a better result but fortunately that's just how it goes sometimes retrospectively, but really proud and pleased with the pace we showed.

The British driver added: "I mean I felt very strongly about pitting for that soft tyre, I was adamant that was the correct call. It makes sense to split the cars in a situation like that, obviously Lewis being the lead car it's a bit more tricky.

"I mean it's so easy in hindsight but I think what would have happened if we both stayed out is Max would have still won the race. As a team finishing second and fourth is not quite the result we probably deserved as team, we should have both been standing on that podium but it's always so difficult in the heat of the moment.

"I think it's really promising what we are showing as a team and I'm excited for the rest of the season."

  10. Postpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

Lewis Hamilton is up to the microphone at Sky Sports. He says Mercedes were "all on it" and the win was there.

He adds that his emotions were running high and he apologies to the team for his passionate radio messages.

"The car was finally working," says Hamilton.

  11. 'We're in a great position' - Hornerpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

    Christian HornerImage source, Getty Images

Red Bull boss Christian Horner, speaking after the race: "That was a massively tough race with the VSC and SC and it was a matter of making the right calls at the right time.

"For us it was crucial to be on the right tyre and it worked out beautifully in the end. I thought they'd [Mercedes] keep George out as a rear gunner to protect Lewis.

"What you see here is only 10 per cent of the team. The team's operating at an incredible level and all the girls and guys in Milton Keynes make performances like this possible.

"Max was in the zone from the moment he arrived to the moment he saw the chequered flag. We're in a great position and we'd have to try quite hard to lose it now. Our approach has always been one race at a time so we don't allow ourselves to think too far ahead."

"I thought there was an issue, so I came back again," said Alpha Tauri man. "We fitted a different set of tyres and after that pit stop, we saw the issue in the data, so we stopped."

The Japanese driver added: "The tyre was not the issue in the end. Seatbelt was fine. We just re-tightened it."

  15. 'It was worth taking the risk'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

    Toto WolffImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on the strategy calls said post-race: "First of all, Lewis is ahead. So we're always having a problem with the call. You can do two things, you can either pit Lewis, lose track position against Verstappen, and leave George out - screwed.

"You can pit both - screwed. So it was worth taking the risk."

On whether the virtual safety car rules need to be revised, he added: "No I think we have those rules, sometimes it works for you, sometimes it doesn't work for you. As long as we adhere to the rules, it's motor racing and everyone can get it wrong but today the decisions from race control were absolutely spot on. It was just a car caused a safety car that shouldn't have been there anymore."

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who finished third: "To be honest, much better was difficult to do. We were a little unlucky with the VSC. I don’t know if this would have changed anything, Max was too quick today.

"Then there was the Mercedes which were flying on the hard tyres. We struggled to find the feeling on the hard tyres, so we’ll analyse that."

On the world championship fight, he added: "I mean as I said in Spa, the gap is now really big, we will take it race by race and try to maximise our potential and let’s see what’s possible."

  18. 'We showed incredible pace' - George Russellpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

George Russell, who finished second, speaking after the race: "Firstly a huge thank you to all the crowd. It's a really special feeling for us drivers to race in Zandvoort.

"As a team we showed incredible pace today. The team result wasn't quite what we hoped for but we can take a lot of confidence moving forward. We are slowly getting closer to that top step."

  19. 'It’s always special to win your home grand prix'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

    Max VerstappenImage source, Getty Images

Max Verstappen, who takes victory at the Dutch GP for a second year in a row: “Yeah it was not a straight forward race but we had to push the whole race, of course with the virtual safety car making the right calls, it’s always a bit of a question mark but it worked out really well once we got back to the soft tyres. We had great pace again.

“Before that safety car I thought it was ok to the end with the hard tyres even though we were a bit slower but then of course the safety car came out. I had a good run in the restart we had a bit more top speed and that helps to attack into turn 1 and from there onwards we had really good balance in the car again.

“It’s always special to win your home grand prix, this year I had to work for it even more, an incredible weekend and really happy we got the Dutch grand prix."
