F1 has wanted to move the Japanese Grand Prix to April for some time - since Liberty took over, basically. The idea being it's best not to hold an F1 race in typhoon season. Plus, cherry blossom etc. But for some reason the organisers don't want to change the date.

Cameron Robinson: I don't get this, we know the weather will not get better so we have to run the cars to clear the water or cancel the race right?
Willem Mevius: I think this may have been all the racing we will see today...
Hamilton: "Do you think this is going to let off at any stage?"
Team: "The forecast is looking pretty grim. We will see."
Lap 3/53
Right, go and put the kettle on or make yourselves some brekkie, as now is a good time due to these treacherous conditions.
Drivers are all back in the garage, hanging around, trying to keep themselves warm and amused. Alex Albon is making his way back to his Williams home.
"The forecast is looking pretty grim," was the message Mercedes engineer Pete Bonnington gave Lewis Hamilton as the red flag was issued.

I can't understand why you would want the Japanese Grand Prix in October when it is in the wettest part of the year. It is effectively their monsoon season. We keep on having this situation when we come to Suzuka, when the weather can be very tricky.

There were some gains to be made from others misfortune.
Mick Schumacher has shuffled his Haas from 15th to 10th place and Daniel Ricciardo, who just missed out on Q3 yesterday by the smallest of margins, is now running in P8.
McLaren team-mate Lando Norris has dropped down to 13th after qualifying in 10th.

Matt Earl: This has Belgium last year all over it again. Cue two token laps behind the Safety Car at some point for half point results.
John Croft: I'm sure there never used to be this many red flags. Recover the cars and if they need wets let them pit for wets. Don't red flag it because it's too wet when they are on inters
What the hell is that? Oh my God - I got something stuck I can't see in front of me.
Lap 3/53
Visibility was dreadful and Pierre Gasly was hit by a piece of advertising hoarding right on the nose as he desperately tried to keep his Alpha Tauri under control.

The reason I think Carlos Sainz has the issue exiting the hairpin is because he already had wheelspin - his wheels were over-slipping. When he hit that standing puddle it made it even worse and he went straight into the barrier.

Amit Mandalia: no idea why they all stayed on the intermediates (well I know the full wets are not very great but surely better than inters in these conditions)
Jeremiah Kariuki: What an eventful start! Sainz out, Albon out and Gasly seems to be
1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
3. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
4. Esteban Ocon (Alpine)
5. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
6. Fernando Alonso (Alpine)
7. George Russell (Mercedes)
8. Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren)
9. Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri)
10. Mick Schumacher (Haas)

It's not that it is too wet, it is just the amount of spray that Formula 1 cars kick up. It's enormous. It is very driveable conditions but as soon as you can't see where you are going, that is when it becomes super tricky.

Lap 3/53
With Alex Albon and Caros Sainz both out of this race due to the wet conditions, the red flag is now brought out.

You have to question whether it is too wet for this.
