Charles Leclerc sat out of first practice to allow Robert Shwartzman time in the Ferrari but the Monegasque driver was back to business in the second session, topping the time sheets as the sun set in Austin.

Leclerc's marker, however, was set on the 2022 compounds, as he was one of the few drivers to be able to run this year's tyres for a period of the 90 minute session because he did not take part in the opening hour.

The extended session was run as a test to assess 2023 tyres.

Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas and McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo were second and third fastest, also with times set on the 2022 tyres. Carlos Sainz set the fastest time on the 2023 development tyres.

First practice yesterday was full to the brim with rookie talent looking to shine in an F1 car around the Austin circuit.

Formula 2 and Sauber Academy driver Theo Pourchaire stepped in for Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo and told Sky Sports the experience was "amazing" but the steering wheel compared to F2 is "a lot more difficult."

Carlin F2 driver Logan Sargeant also told Sky Sports a Formula 1 car is a speedy bit of machinery but the American added he "learnt a lot" from his short time in the Williams.

Spanish IndyCar driver Alex Palou said he had "so much fun" taking Daniel Ricciardo's McLaren out for a spin, while Ferrari development driver Robert Shwartzman called his stint sitting in for Charles Leclerc "awesome and hard".

We'll be seeing Sargeant again at both Mexico and Abu Dhabi first practice session, as well as Young Driver Test at the end of the season. Will the 21-year-old be part of the 2023 grid though?

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was fourth, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez and the Alpine of Fernando Alonso.
