Two minutes to go and Carlos Sainz reaches the first corner on a new set of softs. As if this track isn't scary enough, the Mercedes of George Russell comes out at the same time and is a little bit too close for comfort.

Fernando Alonso is lining up a lap. What can the two-time world champion do? Second on the grid. Alonso goes from fourth to the front row.

That's a strong lap from Perez, Red Bull want a driver who can pull it out the bag. That's a good start, get a first good lap in as it makes the others really have to pull their socks up.

Oscar Piastri is also carrying the hopes of McLaren on his rear wing during the top-10 shootout. The Australian rookie is in 10th after the first runs but will move up because of Charles Leclerc's grid drop.

Top three is Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc (grid penalty) and George Russell. Fernando Alonso needs to hunt out over six tenths in his Aston Martin to beat the raging bull of Sergio Perez.

JAYMES: Max could still win from that quali position, so definitely don't count him out.

Craig: I’m calling it, Alonso on pole! Has he finally made a great career choice?!

Provisional pole is in the hands of Charles Leclerc but with that 10-place grid drop incoming, the Ferrari man won't be able to enjoy it on Sunday.

Can Sergio Perez rescue qualifying for Red Bull? At the moment he can. The Mexican is onto the front row in the top spot with a 1:28.265.

Red, red and some more red as all drivers are on soft tyres, although there is a mix of used and new rubber among the pack.

Fernando Alonso's last pole position was at the German Grand Prix in 2012 and his opening time here is in the 1:28s, which briefly put him top before Charles Leclerc goes quickest and George Russell slots into second.

I think Alonso will be feeling pretty confident, he always seems to be able to pull it out the bag.

I think he (Hulkenberg) will be pretty disappointed maybe there was a small mistake somewhere along the line. Alpine will be briefing a sigh of relief that both of their cars are through to Q3.

Sainz what an uncomfortable position for in, clearly not happy with the car, he's been lagging behind Charles Leclerc all weekend really. Pressure for him because he will know the sister car is sitting there pretty in P3.

Karma comes round quickly, however, as Alpine's Pierre Gasly climbs out of trouble and into the top 10, dumping Hulkenberg out in Q2.

Matthew Murnaghan: I still have hopes on Perez getting pole. I feel sorry for Verstappen, he was going to be fast all weekend up until now.

Jeremiah Kariuki: An Alonso Pole here looks a likelihood. Whatever that Aston Martin is taking! It is a real deal.
