Speaking to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff: "It is (an opportunity) there's no car really in front only to the right. We were good on Friday but there's no guarantee, we have got to stay humble and the car is hopefully good for a podium and if we get more we will take it.

"You've got to have the confidence to drive well here and he's (Russell) at one with the car, Lewis wasn't keen on how the car behaved but everything is to play for both."

  16. Will Verstappen make the podium?published at 12:59 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

I asked you earlier if you thought Max Verstappen would have to make do with watching the podium celebrations from the sidelines tonight.

Sorry, Max. There will be no top-three finish from your P11 starting position today according to 1,427 of our readers.

However, 656 of you said 'yes', Verstappen can come through the field and take a podium place at Marina Bay.

  17. 'We have the pace to stay and compete' - Norrispublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

Lando Norris starts in P4 in an heavily-upgraded McLaren, he told Sky Sports ahead of the race: "It's not going to be easy either way, just to overtake is going to be too difficult so it's going to be about lap one, the start, safety cars, all of the fun stuff.

"It's going to be difficult on track to do a lot but I think we have the pace to stay there and compete against them."

On paper, this is a one-stop race, starting on the medium tyres and then changing to the hards. But a Singapore Grand Prix is fraught with jeopardy - every single event since its debut in 2008 has had at least one safety car. Traditionally, the field starts the race slowly, the front-runners looking after their tyres, which are prone to surface overheating caused by wheel spin, and then begins to speed up as the leader’s pre-determined optimum pit stop time approaches. Then it becomes a question of under-cut - gaining time by stopping first - or over-cut, the opposite. Pit stop time loss is 29 seconds under racing conditions and 16 seconds under safety car.

At the front, Ferrari will be concerned about tyre wear - as always, but also because Charles Leclerc lost his tyres on his race-simulation run on Friday. But the difficulty in overtaking in Singapore makes it possible to protect them by running slowly, as long as Carlos Sainz can hold position at the start - the chances of which are increased by the expected grip off-set between the odd and even-numbered sides of the grid, pole being on the racing line, and therefore cleaner and grippier.

What do Red Bull do, with Max Verstappen starting 11th? They are not likely just to accept it, so will be thinking outside the box. The car was uncompetitive in qualifying, but despite its problems with bouncing, caused by running it at too low a ride-height in search of grip, it is expected to be more competitive in the race.

Back in Miami, Verstappen chose a long opening stint on the hard tyre, giving him a chance to run in free air at his own pace, and he came back to win. If he does the same today, and bides his time before running fast while others pit, could he come back to the podium, or even win, even though he ruled it out on Saturday?

  19. Weather watchpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

The temperature is 29C in Singapore tonight with humidity around 70% but will we see any thundery showers causing a long delay like last year's race?

The 2022 grand prix was run in treacherous wet-dry conditions following a heavy downpour before lights out.

It looks like the risk of any showers is low for the 62-lap race but there has been rain around Marina Bay earlier on today.

The circuit has undergone a bit of a makeover because of redevelopment work taking place in the Marina Bay area, with Turns 16, 17, 18 and 19 removed to become one long straight.

This means the number of corners has been reduced from 23 to 19, while the circuit length now comes in at 4.940km compared to the previous layout of 5.063km.

We’ve also been blessed with one more lap this year, so strap yourselves in for 62 laps of drama (we hope) today.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a fancy graphic to show you the changes, so enjoy my poor, left-handed attempt to trace both versions. The great Tony Hart I am not.
