Lando Norris cuts the kerb in the final sector but it doesn't matter, as no fans are in the grandstands to see it. The McLaren driver is told to box and is now being given a load of instructions by his engineer.

There has been a mixed reaction to holding a race in Sin City. We already know it was high on Daniel Ricciardo's wish list but Max Verstappen thinks this weekend's race may be more style over substance.

The triple world champion thinks the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be "99% show and 1% sporting event", and the spectacle around the race is something he is "not looking forward".

Verstappen added: "They are still going to make money whether I like it or not. But I am also not going to fake it. I voice my opinion in positive and negative things. That's just how I am.

"Some people like show a bit more, I don't like it at all. I just grew up looking at the performance side of things. I like to be in Vegas but not so much for racing."

This is the reason given by the stewards as to why Carlos Sainz has been handed that grid drop: "The stewards note that if they had the authority to grant a derogation in what they consider in this case to be to be mitigating, unusual and unfortunate circumstances, they would have done so, however the regulations do not allow such action."

According to Sky Sports, the stewards spent three hours trying to find a way around the rules so Sainz and Ferrari could avoid a penalty.

Stephen Kelly: "Blip or Black Eye?" It's a full on knockout, F1 should never have gone to Vegas in the first place, useless and boring track which is only worth it for the 0.01% of people who can actually afford it. Madness we don't have a French or German GP and we have this.

Kayleigh: Absolutely foul to give Sainz an engine penalty for an incident created by the track!

If you fancy a quickie wedding in Las Vegas and you're an F1 fan, look no further than the chapel located in the four-storey pit building.

Elvis will officiate, there are racing-themed decorations and the neon signs reads: 'Lights out and together we go'.

Who were the first couple to say 'I do'? Only 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve. The Canadian married his parter, Giulia Marra, in a ceremony before first practice.

Las Vegas is the final stop in a trio of grands prix held in the United States this season.

For the Saturday night grand prix (Sunday morning in the UK), Pirelli have selected the softest compounds in the range for the 6.201km Strip circuit, which Pirelli’s motorsport director Mario Isola says "should guarantee good grip".

Teams can choose from the C3 (white, hard), C4 (yellow, medium) and C5 (red, soft).

Matthew: See, this is why you check the track is all good before you let the cars go out! Personally I don't think this is a good track. It's more for show than actual racing.

Tom: Could have been a lot more dangerous than a black eye. This sort of thing has happened before, but always on street circuits. Almost as if a public road wasn’t built to handle a 200+ mph race car. Get back to actual tracks!

It's the belief here that the session has a hard stop at 04:00 local time. So if there are further delays, that would shorten the session.

This little piggy has been naughty. Let's see if it can behave itself in second practice.

It looks like a hog roast, but all the big Strip landmarks will be taken in during the 50-lap race including Caesars Palace, the Bellagio (including the famous fountains) and the brand new MSG Sphere.

Average speeds for the 17-corner track are expected to match the Italian test at Monza, with Pirelli motorsport director Mario Isola anticipating a "very fast" Vegas thrill ride.

"We are expecting a high speed straight - very high speed," Isola told Bloomberg.

Fingers crossed we get to see some rapid laps.
