The second-easiest hole in 2006 and birdie chances are expected again this year. Most will be able to reach the green in two but there is a deep bunker to the right of the putting surface.

    2006 difficulty rating: 17

  2. Mickelson finding his groovepublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Nice stuff from 'Lefty' as he lamps an iron from the middle of the fairway on the fifth and with a trickle up onto the green and a generous roll, he will have 15 feet for birdie.

Bubba Watson follows the defending champion and as always with Bubba, it's long and this time lucky. He misses a bunker by inches and will have a putt from the fringe for eagle.

  5. Kaymer hits double bogeypublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

The par-five fifth is playing as one of the easiest on the course but Martin Kaymer just rattled off a seven and he slips back to one over par. He will kick himself - a scoring opportunity wasted.

In all, we have 46 players under par. Ernie Els is certainly not one of them.

Bunkers front left and right protect a narrow green. There is a steep drop-off slope on the left-hand side of the green that leaves you an extremely tough chip or putt.

    2006 difficulty rating: 11

  8. Disaster day for Erniepublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Ernie Els has not had his porridge today. Or maybe he forgot to put his contact lenses in. After missing two putts from inside a foot on the first hole, he has just missed another tiddler on four. It's tough to watch and he is five over.

  9. Slow scoringpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

A subtle increase in the wind looks likely to be enough to ensure Rory McIlroy goes to bed tonight as the man they all have to catch. Scoring is certainly not as prolific as it was earlier on today and the only players out on course who could catch the 25-year-old are at least four shots back.

Famous last words, you can bet someone fires out a 65 now...

Bubba makes up for that short-range miss at three with a long-ranger on four, moves to one under. Mickelson's shortish birdie attempt slips away like mercury, he stays level... that's me for a while, here's Luke Reddy...

American billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump talking from New York on BBC Radio 5 live about his recent purchase of Turnberry golf course for a reported $63m: "Over the years I've played Turnberry many times and it's one of the most beautiful courses in the world so to have the opportunity to buy it is amazing.

"We'll be doing certain adjustments in conjunction with the R&A and I'll be spending at least £100m on the hotel. I consider Turnberry to be a trust and I am going to take great care of it.

"I haven't heard there is a question mark over Turnberry hosting the Open in 2019. Some of the great battles at the Open have taken place there and the R&A consider it to be a very important course."

He was also just a shot away from play-offs in the 2008 US Open and 2009 Open and in total has had eight top three finishes in majors.
