Europe's Justin Rose: "When the captain sends you out first, you have to deliver a point and that's what me and the 'Ice Man' [Henrik Stenson] came to deliver. The course was playing hard early but we managed to steal a few birdies when we could. For us to get off to this sort of start and build some momentum is fantastic."

Stephen Gallacher lands on the 12th green, but what would be a volcano of noise is just a gentle burbling with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed six up and over the horizon.

Martin Kaymer sees Jimmy Walker's good approach on 13 and trumps it with one of even higher quality.

Europe are one up in this one, having led by three at one point.

The south of the scoreboard is rising. A flush of red across the bottom section now as Keegan Bradley nuzzles in a birdie two on the 10th and Rory McIlroy continues his series of good-looking, but ultimately unsuccessful putts in his attempt to follow suit.

Rory McIlroy has a 15-footer to halve the hole after Phil Mickelson's conjuring from the bunker. The Northern Irish world number one's putter has not quite got toasty though and he slumps forward as his attempt rolls by and he and Sergio Garcia fall behind.

Justin Rose on 13 plants his approach up to about 15 foot, joining the other three balls already in place on the green. All four players will have a punt at a birdie when they arrive up there.

Ohh! Phil Mickelson's bunker shot runs of legs just short of the finishline, stopping a handful of inches from the hole.

Sergio Garcia with a birdie attempt at nine. Never in, but it is close enough for his par attempt and considering his short-range wobbles on the front nine that is important.

McGinley and counterpart Tom Watson have until 12.30pm to hand in their foursomes (alternate shot) pairings for this afternoon's four matches.

McGinley's on course vice-captains are Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jose Maria Olazabal, Sam Torrance, Des Smyth and Padraig Harrington.

As it is on 12 as Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose also flirt with birdies, but go home alone.

Michael Jordan is doing a decent impression of one of the United States vice-captains. The former Chicago Bulls star and Space Jam scene-stealer is sporting shades, a cap and an earpiece as he watches from behind the ropes.
