United States captain Tom Watson: "The real difference was the foursomes. The combined scores for our team in foursomes were really, really high compared to theirs.

"We made them think about us early on in the singles and then they turned it on but the foursomes play is what separated the two teams.

"You played your best but it wasn't good enough. You've got to find out what it takes to play a little bit better."

Dubuisson's second into 18 is a little bit wild and the Frenchman is assailed by cameramen and fellow players as he makes his way to the back of the green. The Frenchman pitching on from the rough... and he's made a dog's dinner of it, sending across the green and back down a swell...

This is the third time Europe have won the Ryder Cup three times in succession, their most amount of wins in a row. The United States hold the record, having won seven on the trot twice, but that was when they weren't playing the whole of Europe.

"The fact of the matter is, when Tom Watson was appointed it was in the wake of him finishing second at the Open championship (in 2009). There was a feeling he'd tap into the US team. But the vibe that I've had is there was no direct line of communication between the captain, the vice captains and the players."

Dubuisson has bombed his drive down the 18th and Johnson's isn't bad either, although some way back. Here comes Miguel Angel Jimenez, driving his buggy down the 18th, cigar in hand, waving regally, as Johnson prepares to play his second. Yanks it left of the green...

Johnson misses his par putt, meaning Dubuisson has a six-footer to win the match... didn't hit the little bleeder, hole halved in four, Dubuisson guaranteed to remain unbeaten...

Dubuisson and Johnson side by side in the sand and the Frenchman plays first and comes up a little short. The Frenchman, in contrast to Johnson, hasn't lost all week and therefore remains unbeaten in Ryder Cups, so he won't be coughing this up either. Johnson almost matches him with his escape...

Dubuisson tugs his tee shot at 17 and finds sand, as does Johnson. Zach is staring down the barrel at three defeats in a week so he won't be giving up the ghost.

    Europe up

I'm not afraid to admit my focus has slightly gone as well, sorry about that. What I can tell you is that Johnson could only make par at 16 and Dubuisson somehow walked off with a birdie after being next to a tree in two, meaning the Frenchman sneaks a lead.

  11. Postpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

Johnson safely on in three at 16, Dubuisson playing from in front of a tree. He has a swing and he has plenty of history of scrambling, he's like a modern-day Seve... stiffs it short of the hole, that was almost mysterious in its brilliance...

Ian Poulter speaking to Sky Sports: "The US came at us hard this morning, like we expected, but Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose managed to turn their matches around. It is just incredible.

"The captain [Paul McGinley] was superb - from the images on the team room walls to the way he treated everyone just the same.

"The way that Rory [McIlroy] did it today was enormously impressive. He pressed it home all the way from the start. There weren't enough of big moments from me this week, but it is not about the players it is about the team."

It's a bit tricky trying to focus on what's going on out on the course but we have Victor Dubuisson and Zach Johnson still going at it down the last. The Frenchman has made a nause-up of his approach but you can't blame him for being deflated.

Sergio Garcia speaking to Sky Sports: "I hit a couple of wayward shots on my round, but the finish was amazing over the last few holes. I am not someone who cries but coming down 17 I couldn't hold it. This event is so special and I have been lucky to play in so many.

"Paul McGinley was so methodical, touching on every area that he needed to. I have been fortunate to have some great captains, but Paul did things differently and in great style. He was a little bit more modern, looking into little things that we could do better and he has been on at me for months about how much he wants me to be in his team. That helped me play well."

America's Matt Kuchar: "It's tough but the Europeans are playing some great golf. Bubba and I played fantastic yesterday but we couldn't keep up with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose. That summed it up for me. That's been the way the cup has gone the last few times.

"All of us get home and then we get ready to play what comes next. There's not much else you can do."

  18. I had a buzz from every conversation with Tom Watson, says McGinleypublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

Europe captain Paul McGinley: "The Ryder Cup has evolved. I've seen the mistakes we've made over the years and I've changed things a little bit. Bringing in a fifth vice-captain I think helped us in those afternoon foursomes. Des [Smyth] on the first day and Ole [Jose Maria Olazabal] on the second day were brilliant, they did so much to prepare the guys for those sessions. For fans from the corner of Ireland to the bottom of Turkey, that's who I'm proud and happy for.

"It was an incredible performance from Graeme McDowell. In some ways it was a bit of a gamble to play him only three times this week. But I told him all along I wanted him out first on Sunday and he had enough energy to turn around a deficit like that.

"Tom Watson was my golfing hero growing up. He still is to a large extent, there are so many qualities I still admire. I think a lot of my golfing personality has come from watching Tom over the years. I've enjoyed every conversation we've had together over the last two years and I always had a buzz when I saw a message coming in from Tom Watson."

  19. Poulter v Simpsonpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

My apologies, Simpson is actually one up heading down the 18th and could be about to deal Poulter a first defeat in Ryder Cup singles. Poulter's long putt comes up short, but Simpson must have made a hash of things somewhere back down the fairway because the Englishman nicked that last hole to remain unbeaten in five singles matches going back to 2004.

"Tom Watson was the last man to captain an overseas win for the USA (in 1993) but not only have they been outplayed, they've been outfought and outthought. It's little wonder every player we've heard from has praised Paul McGinley to the heights."
