  1. Great day's work for Kaymerpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Kaymer -5, D Johnson E, Knox +1 (18)

Martin Kaymer has not finished in the top 10 of a major since winning the US Open in 2014 but he can reflect on a great day's work with a five-under-par round of 66, which did not include any bogeys.

His long-range birdie attempt on the 18th is narrowly short, meaning he is currently tied second, three shots behind Phil Mickelson.

Dustin Johnson will not be as happy with his round that saw no birdies in the back nine. He is level par, one ahead of the third man in that three-ball Russell Knox.

An eventful few hours for the Scot, including an eagle on the 16th, three birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys.

  2. Jimenez eagles 16thpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Jimenez +1 (16)

It's not been a great round for Miguel Angel Jimenez, but the flamboyant Spaniard enjoys a little taste of glory as he eagles the 16th.

The 43-year-old pitched up just before the hole with his ball dancing around the pin before finding its way in to move him to one over par.

Sergio Garcia hits a lovely iron shot as he reaches the turn at Royal Troon.

  5. 'I want to shed a tear'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Mickelson -8 (18)

Phil Mickelson spoke to Radio 5 live after his record equaling round.

"It was a fun round, I was able to take advantage of one of the most beautiful days here, the sun was out and the wind died down and I was able to play one of the greatest links courses in Troon.

"Yet I still walk away wanting to shed a tear with that putt missing and lipping out.I had a chance to do something historical. With a foot to go I thought it was in, I am not sure how it missed. The heartbreak of that is overshadowing my round right now.

"That putt was right there with less than a foot, I am not sure how it did not go in.

"I am delighted with the way I have played. I have been working hard this year to get my swing on plane and today was the day when I did not have a lot of stress and was able to control the golf ball throughout the round."

  6. One more birdie chance for Kaymerpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Kaymer -5, D Johnson E, Knox +1 (17)

Martin Kaymer, from the middle of the fairway after his tee shot, opts for a six iron, to leave him a 40-foot attempt for a birdie on the 18th that would leave him on six under at the end of day one.

  7. Sullivan cards 67published at 18:45 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Sullivan -4 (18)

Martin Kaymer aside, it's all red, white and blue at the top of the leaderboard as we head in to the evening on day one at Royal Troon.

A couple of English hopes linger not too far off the pace, however. Justin Rose carded a three under par 68 earlier, and Andy Sullivan has just finished with a birdie for a four-under 67 in the first round.

Wales' Jamie Donaldson and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy are a further two shots off the pace.

Strapper Nick: Gosh, how did that ball not go in! Denied a 62 but 63 is not too shabby.

  11. 'What a beauty' by Mickelsonpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Phil Mickelson sinks a long putt on the 14th on his way to scoring the joint lowest ever round at the Open Championship.

  12. Johnson goes secondpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Z Johnson -6 (16)

Zach Johnson does not intend on giving up his Open title easily, the American moves to six under through 16 with two birdies in his last three holes.

Another pair of birdies on his final two would see him match that superb round by Phil Mickelson - surely not?

  13. 'I wanted Phil to break the record'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Jay Townsend
Former European Tour player on Radio 5 live

Dustin Johnson has played pretty well from tee to green, he has just not holed a putt. If you are hitting good putts and they do not go in, then you have to be patient, but with Jordan Spieth, the way he was putting this morning, it does not look good for him.

I wanted Phil Mickleson to break the record, I was trying to lean that in. Phil knew what he was putting for, he knew the significance of that putt. I am glad he hit it, it was a good putt, it did not go in but what the heck he gave it a hell of a try.

  16. Mickelson takes clubhouse leadpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Mickelson -8 Westwood E Els E (18)

Let's have a look at Phil Mickelson's record-equaling round today, one that gives him a three-stroke clubhouse lead.

The American shot four birdies on the way out, carding 32, before notching another four birdies on the back nine for an eight-under round of 63 in which he did not drop a shot.

Lee Westwood was alongside the American to witness the drama, finishing on level par for the day, as was Ernie Els who also heads into the clubhouse on evens.

  18. So close for Mickelsonpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Mickelson -8 (18)

Phil Mickelson has been in fantastic form today, establishing a three-shot opening-round lead at Royal Troon, and coming within a whisker of carding a major record.

With around a 16-foot putt to break the record, his shot seems to round the hole but it just won't land for the American.

"I can't believe I didn't do it," he tells his caddy on the way out.

As it is, he joins eight other players to have hit 63 at an Open Championship - not a bad start to the weekend at all.

    Mickelson -8 (18)

Clean strike from Phil Mickelson on the approach leaves him on the green and around 15 or 16 feet from the pin.

That's also the distance that currently stands between Mickelson and record round of 62 at a major - no pressure, Phil.
