    McIlroy (+5 after 6) Schwartzel (level) D Johnson (-1)

    Copy, paste.

McIlroy makes bogey, a fourth one in a row and fifth in six holes. There's hard luck with this one as his 15 footer for par rattles the cup harshly.

Charl Schwartzel also drops on this par four but Dustin Johnson gets up and down from the left for his par.

    Westwood (E) Rahm, Reed (+1 after 5)

Patrick Reed can't make the most of that birdie chance at the fifth, neither can Jon Rahm. The pair stay on one over.

Lee Westwood is the elder statesman in that group, and he's proving the most consistent at the moment - five successive pars for the 44-year-old.

    Day (-1 after 12)

Jason Day is into red numbers as his tee shot on the 183-yard par five 12th comes to rest six feet from the cup. He rolls it home with the delicate touch of a dud folding napkins in a posh restaurant.

Reed, Rahm (both +1 after 4)

Patrick Reed sizes up his lie on the fifth, approaches it with a strut and then checks back again.

He's happier second time around. The ball whizzes past the flag, but spins back and putts the American within a reasonable distance for birdie.

Playing partner Jon Rahm could do with one of those too. He carded his first bogey of the day at the fourth.

    McIlroy (+4 after 5)

If you could speak to your nine-year-old self, what would you have said or asked for.

Right now Rory would probably ask how he once found that hole in one.

Legend has it McIlroy was hitting the ball 40 yards at the age of two. He was was hustling at this game at an age when most kids are sat glaring at Peppa Pig. Peppa Pif would be better at golf today though to be fair.

  8. Eagle for Beefpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Johnston (-1 after 17)

Andrew Johnston was looking at a one-over opening day.... until a spectacular eagle on the 17th.

Beef loves it, the crowd loves it. Putting of the highest order from the Englishman, who sinks it from the very fringes of the green.

    "Beeeeeeeefffff..." rings out around Birkdale.

  9. Major trouble for McIlroypublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    McIlroy (+4) Schwartzel (-1) D Johnson (-1, all after 5)

Everybody wave Rory McIlroy off at this rate. I'm waving at my desk. He's just waved a putt goodbye on five. That's now bogey-par-bogey-bogey-bogey for four over after five. This latest putt is maybe four feet and it barely threatens. He is in big, big trouble. Charl Schwartzel and Dustin Johnson both saved par nicely on the par three alongside him.

  10. 'I know what is coming tomorrow'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Spieth -5

“It is important to get in the red numbers,” said two-time major winner Spieth after his bogey-free round.

Speaking to BBC Sport he added: “I have been in good form, my last event [The Travelers Championship] was a win, that gave me a lot of confidence and then I had three weeks off.

“Normally I start slow coming back, so maybe I am a bit surprised to start The Open extremely strongly and not have to grind too much.

“At this course and The Open I know the conditions can change this entire leaderboard.

“It’s a really good start, I know what is coming tomorrow, know even par would be as good as or better than my score today if what is forecast gets here.”

Spieth is referring to the wind and rain which is forecast for the second round.

    Casey (-3 after 10)

Paul Casey made it to the turn at three under. It's his birthday tomorrow.... the big 4 0, shhhh.

He's showing no signs of slowing down, but an outside chance of birdie goes begging at the 10th and it'll be par for the 39-year-and-364-day-old.

    Mickelson (level after 2) McIlroy (+3 after 4) D Johnson (-1 after 4) Garcia (+1 after 10)

When Phil Mickelson launches into the air, he stares at his ball with all the fear of a man looking at a dragon flying overhead. He finds the green on three so his heart rate can come down again.

Sergio Garcia has rattled in nine straight pars to add to his opening bogey, still one over. On five, Dustin Johnson is too greedy in going for the pin from the fairway and he gets a whole lot of bunker. He's short sided too, nasty up and down from there. Rory McIlroy seeking stability finds the hear of the green, 50ft or more to the pin.Back to Mickelson for birdie... short.

  14. Birdie for Connellypublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Connelly (-4 after 15)

That's another birdie for Austin Connelly as the Canadian moves to four under par.

Word is he could drive the ball 120 yards at the age of four... that wasn't too long ago, he's only 20 now.

Was he nervous heading into his first major? Nope.

Connelly told the Halifax Herald: “I think links golf suits my game very well. With the trajectory and shot shape that I have in penetrating, low draws, I’m confident that it’s going to translate well on the course.”

  15. Kuchar ties the leadpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Kuchar (-5 after 9)

Oh hello. Matt Kuchar is quietly going about his business and now has a share of the lead.

He sets up a birdie putt on the ninth and makes no mistake to finish off the front nine in 29 - TWENTY NINE!

That's five birdies on the way out for the 39-year-old , who moves level with Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka.

  17. Postpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

Westwood (E after 3), Rahm, Reed (both E after 2)

There's a lot of green to aim for on the third and both Jon Rahm and Lee Westwood find it, with Patrick Reed joining them.

The Spaniard's the happier, though. He's a few feet behind the flag.

Rahm crouches beside Reed as they watch Westwood's birdie attempt like a couple of kids desperate for the toilet - they'll stay crouching, because that's not dropping. Par for Westy.

  18. 'All over the place'published at 15:44 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    McIlroy (+3 after 3)

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Birkdale

"He's all over the place at the moment McIlroy. Two over par and now around 10ft for par to stop it being more."

McIlroy misses the par putt. He's three over. You can listen to Iain by clicking 'live coverage'.

  19. Uh oh...published at 15:41 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

McIlroy (+2 after 3) Mickelson (level after 1) Day (level after 10)

Rory McIlroy on four from the tee... sand. Bad to worse. Phil Mickelson on the second green, the length of a double decker bus from the hole, he leaves a short one for par. Jason Day, in his slam dunk shoes on 10, some 12ft for birdie... poor. Never in, he walked after it instantly.

The way things are going, McIlroy will be out of this at the turn.

  20. Postpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

    Kuchar (-4 after 8)

Matt Kuchar has started superbly with four birdies in his first seven holes, and the American has a chance for another one at the eighth.

He's some 15 feet or so away from the pin, but you wouldn't put it past him to tuck this away...

It's got the legs, but not quite the angle, and despite snaking back up towards the cup Kuchar will have to settle for par.
