I think the hurt runs espeically deep as this was regarded as their best opportunity to win a World Cup or at least make a final. Playing on home soil was extra special but the hurt of semi-finals continues.

Though England have not given the crowds what they wanted, the atmosphere in Liverpool has been incredible and is a testament to the growing popularity of netball.

Women of all ages have flocked to the city – some from as far as Australia and New Zealand – to show support for their team.

Lucy and Charlotte Margetson from West Yorkshire had watched the semi-final agony on TV but there was no question of them not coming to Liverpool for the finals day.

Their mum told BBC Sport: "Yesterday's result was such a shame. We were gutted. But we had been here last week and definitely wanted to come again, even though England aren't in the final.

"England had played so well, up until the New Zealand match, and I think they deserve to win the bronze medal."

Hopes were high after the Roses won Commonwealth gold in 2018, but their defeat to New Zealand was the eighth straight World Cup semi-final England have lost.

The loss was particularly bitter given that this is Tracey Neville’s last World Cup before she takes a break from coaching England.

The Duston Roses - resplendent in their Roses headgear - are from Northamptonshire and are here en masse and ready to give their support to England.

They were here on Saturday for the semi-final defeat to New Zealand but are confident the Roses will come away with a bronze medal.

The arena was full of anxious faces and tension, but that seemed to evaporate when England were introduced onto the court and that familiar roar greeted them.

This is the last time the players will experience this amazing crowd and they should drink it in.

Will they reward their support - and themselves - with a medal today?

England's starting side is largely unchanged from the semi-final, but Nat Haythornthwaite starts at WA in place of Chelsea Pitman after the impact the mid-courter had when she came on on Saturday.

Helen Housby and Jo Harten switch places, with Housby at GS and Harten at GA.

England were unbeaten throughout the group stage, but the Silver Ferns proved too much for them as they edged to a 47-45 victory on Saturday.

The arena fell flat as the fans who had been screaming on every England pass realised they would not see their team crowned world champions.

The players looked gutted too. Can they pick themselves up for one last match?

If England can beat South Africa today, they will equal their performance at the last World Cup.

The Roses won 58-47 against South Africa on Thursday but the Proteas looked dangerous as they lost by just two goals to Australia in the other semi-final.

England fans had their hearts broken on Saturday as the Roses were outclassed by New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final.
