Well that's another prediction gone wrong! I told my fellow Donegal man Martin McHugh in Enniskillen last night that Tyrone would win with something to spare today. I should have learned by now not to make such emphatic pronouncements.

Monaghan were full value for their win today. Despite looking in danger of going off injured midway through the second half, Conor McManus fired over a couple of late sensational scores to help the Farney men to victory.

Goalkeeper Rory Beggan's long-range place-kicking was a feature but there were outstanding performances all over the park for Monaghan as they set up an Ulster semi-final against Fermanagh next month.

With Tyrone's three-in-a-row hopes in Ulster ended, they must attempt to regroup for the long qualifiers route.

Tyrone boss Mickey Harte has no complaints about the outcome after his team's three-in-a-row hopes in Ulster are ended.

"The goal was a critical score. It was always between us. We got it back close to the end there but they had always the capability of pulling away," said the three-time All-Ireland winning manager.

"Conor McManus got some wonderful points at the end. You can't beat that if you have that kind of class to call upon and you going to find that very difficult to beat."

Harte said the injury problems of Cathal McCarron, Tiernan McCann and Lee Brennan didn't help his team's chances but refused to go down the route of using that as an excuse.

"We knew that they hadn't trained as much as we would have liked them to have done approaching this game. We felt we still would start them to see how far they would go."

Harte said that the remarkable long-range free-taking of Monaghan keeper Rory Beggan had been a "big, big asset" to the Farney men.

"Monaghan have a lot of things going for them and they are in the semi-finals on merit.

"We'd always prefer to go in the front door and there's a cup in Ulster in the front door.

"I don't think it will be hard to lift the players. They believe that they are good enough to challenge for the quarter-finals.

"So if we can get our act together and not get too harsh a draw in the first instance, maybe we can build a bit of momentum for ourselves."

Malachy O'Rourke must be thrilled with his team's display but you almost wouldn't know it judging by his immediate reaction to the result.

"I don't know if it (the victory) is that significant," says the Monaghan boss as your eyebrows start to rise.

"We knew we had to come here and put in a big performance if we wanted to get anything out of the game.

"It's a passage through to a (Ulster) semi-final and that was all we could get today.

"We're pleased. Tyrone have been reigning champions and they won the Ulster Championship last year.

"It wasn't a perfect performance but we are just delighted to get through."

A totally deserved Monaghan victory. Tyrone fought back to level with five minutes left but the Farney men pushed on again with five further points. What a victory for Malachy O'Rourke and his players as Tyrone's hopes of a third straight Ulster title are ended.

Tyrone's day is ending in abject misery as Peter Harte is sent off for appearing to aim a rabbit punch at Ryan McAnespie's ribs. With Tyrone seemingly bowing to the inevitable, McManus strides upfield unopposed to slot another Monaghan point.

Monaghan have surely got this in the bag as McManus points another free before swinging over a sensational score from near the right touchline with his right foot. That was an incredible score.

But Monaghan are back two ahead with less than three minutes of normal time remaining as a high-pressure McManus free from distance is followed by a superb effort from play by recently-introduced Farney captain Colin Walshe.

Another McAliskey free levels the contest with five minutes left.

Tyrone forward Ronan O'Neill doesn't look happy at all at being substituted after being introduced himself in the second half. He has words with Mickey Harte as he comes off and throws his gloves away in disgust.
