    This year's North West 200 is poised to be called off because of coronavirus just hours after the Isle of Man TT was cancelled.

    The annual road race meeting, which was scheduled to take place between 10 and 16 May, is Ireland's largest outdoor sporting event.

    The Isle of Man TT in June is also cancelled because of coronavirus.

    The Ulster GP, which is held in August, is now the only international road racing event still on at present.

  4. Ireland tour of Zimbabwe called offpublished at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2020

    Ireland's six-match tour of Zimbabwe next month has been postponed with the agreement of both governing bodies because of the coronavirus outbreak.

    The teams were scheduled to contest three Twenty20 and three ODIs from 2-12 April in Bulawayo.

    "This is the only reasonable decision as we all play our part in containing the spread of COVID-19," said Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom.

    "We will take a safety-first approach over the coming weeks and months."

  5. Belfast City Marathon has been postponedpublished at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2020

    The 2020 Belfast City Marathon has been postponed and is now scheduled to take place on Sunday 20th September 2020.

    The 2020 Belfast City Half Marathon will now take place on Sunday 28th February 2021.

    Today’s announcement to postpone the Tandragee 100 National Motorcycle Road Races has been taken with the intention of keeping people safe.

  7. Coronavirus could end O'Neill's tenure as Northern Ireland bosspublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

    Michael O'Neill's eight-year stint as Northern Ireland manager could come to an early end due to coronavirus.

    Uefa will decide on Tuesday if Northern Ireland's Euro 2020 play-off in Bosnia-Herzegovina will be postponed.

    O'Neill was named Stoke City boss in November but was to remain in charge of NI for the play-offs later this month.

    "It wouldn't be doable if you were doing it September, October and November, that wouldn't be an option," said O'Neill on his dual role.

    "November to March is the quietest part of an international manager's calendar and that has coincided with the period I've been in charge here."

    The first two rounds of the Ulster Superbike Championship have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

    The Temple 100 event due for Saturday, 21 March, and the 44th Enkalon Trophy Races, which had been scheduled for Easter Saturday,11 April have been called off.

    "With any high-speed motorcycle event, we could unnecessarily put the NHS under more pressure through possible racing incidents," said a statement from race organisers.

    "We appreciate the great caring service from the NHS staff under normal circumstances for event injured, hopefully this will ease some of the pressure on them at this time."

    Netball Superleague fixtures have been postponed with immediate effect.

    The Board and all Netball Superleague clubs will convene again on 17 March where the position of the 2020 season, in light of an anticipated update on guidance from the Government, will be considered.

    Several Northern Irish players will be impacted by the postponement, including Manchester Thunder's Caroline O'Hanlon and Team Bath's Fionnuala Toner.

    Super Cup NI organisers say it is "too early" to make a decision about whether the annual youth tournament will take place in August.

    The coronavirus outbreak has heavily impacted sport across the world.

    The tournament is scheduled to run in Northern Ireland from 2-7 August.

  12. Cookstown 100 postponed and provisionally rearranged for Septemberpublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2020

    Next month's Cookstown 100 has been postponed because of coronavirus.

    The event was scheduled for 24 and 25 April but new provisional dates of 11 and 12 September have been set.

    Organisers said the new dates have been "pencilled in" and are subject to approval from the relevant authorities.

    "We have made this decision on a precautionary basis due to the situation which faces us all with the current coronavirus outbreak," event chairman John Dillon said.

    Congatulations to Belfast Star, who have won the Basketball Ireland Super League for the first time in 21 years.

    Belfast Giants have released a statement on Friday's decision to cancel the Elite League season because of coronavirus.

    "This is obviously a tough and disappointing decision for everyone, but one that is appropriate to prioritise the safety of the fans, sponsors, players and staff," they said.

    "The team will continue to work in consultation with the Elite League to monitor the situation moving forward.

    "The Giants will be making additional announcements, including regarding ticketing information, as details become available."

    It comes after BBC Sport learned that two Giants players are self-isolating as a precaution after showing symptoms of coronavirus.

  15. NI and Republic play-offs under further threatpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    The Euro 2020 play-offs involving Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland on 26 March have moved closer to being postponed after Fifa recommended that all impending internationals should be called off.

    The opponents of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - Bosnia and Slovakia - both requested Uefa to postpone the matches.

    And Uefa is to hold a video conference on Tuesday to decide whether to call off the tournament entirely.

    Doing so falls under the jurisdiction of European football's governing body, but their world equivalent has said games in March and April should be called off "to avoid any unnecessary health risks and also situations of potential sporting unfairness".

  17. Circuit of Ireland latest rally to be postponedpublished at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    The Circuit of Ireland rally has been postponed by the Ulster Automobile Club due to the coronavirus outbreak.

    The rally, which centres around Dundrod, was scheduled to run from 10-11 April after a four-year absence.

    It was set to be the third round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, and is the second to be postponed after the West Cork Rally on 14 and 15 March was called off.

    "The team have been monitoring this situation on an daily basis and have decided; in line with guidelines issued by Motorsport UK, the Government and the Public Health Agency, it is in the best interests of public health to act now in order to reduce the spread of the virus and postpone the event," said Graeme Stewart, event director.

    "We have received extremely positive support from all relevant bodies involved with the rally for this highly responsible decision and we are actively pursuing an alternative date later in 2020.

    "The UAC would like to sincerely thank all our volunteers, business partners, stakeholders, competitors, residents and followers, many of whom have sacrificed so much and been so supportive in re-awakening the 'Giant Spirit' of this legendary event, for their efforts."

    BBC Sport understands that two Belfast Giants players are self-isolating as a precaution after showing symptoms of coronavirus.

    The decision to self-isolate was made in line with health advice from the UK government.

    The Elite League was cancelled by organisers as two of the competition's 10 teams have players in self-isolation.

    Ulster Rugby say they will seek to rearrange schools' finals that have been postponed, while adding there is no certainty as to when that will be.

    Wallace High School and Royal School Armagh were due to meet in the Schools' Cup final on Tuesday 17 March at Kingspan Stadium, with that fixture among those to now be indefinitely delayed.

    “We fully understand how disappointing the postponement of fixtures is for all involved, especially for the young players and their families who have dedicated so much time and effort to secure their place in the various finals taking place in the coming weeks," read an Ulster statement.

    “We must however act in the best interests of public health and safety and will continue to work closely with all schools to try and rearrange these fixtures at a later date, whilst recognising that these are clearly unprecedented times."

  20. Olympic and Paralympic swimming trials to be moved to Junepublished at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    The Irish Open Swimming Championships have been postponed.

    The event is set to double-up Olympic and Paralympic trials and is expected to be rescheduled for the end of June.

    Originally the championships were set for 1-5 April in Dublin.
