  1. Final Olympic sailing qualifying event postponedpublished at 13:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2020

    World Sailing has cancelled next month's Hempel World Cup Series Genoa event due to the outbreak of coronavirus in Italy.

    The event, due to be held in the Italian city from 11-19 April, would have been Northern Ireland sailor Ryan Seaton and partner Seafra Guilfoyle's final opportunity to qualify for Tokyo 2020 in the 49er class.

    The World Sailing Board consulted with the World Sailing Medical Commission prior to making this decision.

    The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted World Sailing an extension of the qualification period to 30 June 2020.

  2. North West 200 going ahead "at the present time"published at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2020

    North West 200 event director Mervyn Whyte has confirmed the annual Northern Ireland road race is set to go ahead as planned until "we're told opposite".

    Whyte has said that organisers of the popular motorcycling road race have taken advice from the public health authorities.

    The North West 200 is scheduled to take place between 10 and 16 May.

    "At the present time, the North West 200 is going until we're told opposite," Whyte told BBC Sport NI.

    Saturday's Irish Premiership fixture between Linfield and Larne at Windsor Park has been postponed.

    The decision comes after a Linfield player tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19).

    No new date for the game has been scheduled.

  4. Meath GAA player contracts Covid-19published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2020

    A GAA club in County Meath has confirmed one of their players have tested positive for coronavirus.

    Simonstown Gaels in Navan said the infected person is one of two club members who recently returned from a holiday in Italy.

    Before returning to Ireland, the duo agreed to a two-week period of self-isolation.

    The second player has not shown any symptoms.

    On Monday, west Belfast GAA club St Gall's shut its clubhouse and suspended all training and matches after a member tested positive for coronavirus.

    Today's Euro 2021 qualifying match between Montenegro and the Republic of Ireland (15:00 GMT) in Petrovac is to be played behind closed doors.

    The Montenegro Ministry of Health made the decision on Tuesday evening.

    A statement on the Montenegro FA's website read: "The match will be played without the presence of supporters in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Health of Montenegro related to prevention of import and spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

    "The Ministry of Health made a decision earlier today (Tuesday), at the recommendation of the Institute of Public Health, to hold all sporting events, national and international, without the presence of an audience."

    The Republic - unbeaten after four games - can leapfrog Group I leaders Germany with three points in Wednesday's game.

    Belfast City Marathon organisers say they are working to keep the 2020 event open, which is scheduled to run on 3 May.

    "The company is reviewing government information and advice daily on the coronavirus and will update of any changes or developments on the staging of the 2020 Belfast City Marathon on the official website and social media pages.

    "Belfast City Marathon Ltd would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience at this uncertain time."

    The Special Olympics Ireland Winter Games, which were due to take place in Northern Ireland next week (20-22 March), will be postponed due to the evolving coronavirus situation.

    “This is very disappointing news for everyone, especially our athletes who have been looking forward to these Games for some time," said Matt English, CEO of Special Olympics Ireland.

    "It is our intention to reschedule the event towards the end of the year.

    “We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has already put in so much work on these Games for their support.”

    Irish Premiership side Linfield have confirmed that one of their players has contracted coronavirus.

    Windsor Park will be closed for the next two days for a deep clean.

    The first two World Cup rowing regattas scheduled to take place in Italy been been cancelled.

    Banbridge man Philip Doyle and his partner Ronan Byrne were due to compete from Ireland in World Cup 1 in Sabaudia from 10-12 April while Belfast woman Rebecca Shorten was set to compete for Britain at World Cup 2 from 1-3 May in Varese.

    Euro 2020 play-off: Slovakia v Republic of Ireland

    The Republic of Ireland's Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia on 26 March will be played behind closed doors following a Slovak Government decision.

    This follows coronavirus cases in Slovakia which led the government on Monday to announce a 14-day ban on all sporting events in the country.

    Fans who have bought tickets for the Bratislava game will be refunded.

    The Football Association of Ireland was informed of the development by its Slovak counterpart on Tuesday morning.

    "The Republic of Ireland's Uefa Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia on 26 March will be played behind closed doors on the instruction of the Slovak Government," said an FAI statement.

    Euro 2020 play-off: Bosnia-Herzegovina v Northern Ireland

    Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill says he won't dwell on any potential decision to play the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final in Bosnia-Herzegovina behind closed doors.

    Ticket sales for the game have been postponed over fears about the spread of coronavirus.

    "It's not in my control, so dwelling on it too much is not really beneficial," said O'Neill.

    The play-off semi-final is scheduled to take place on 26 March in Zenica.

    List of events affected by outbreak grows

    The list of sporting events in Northern Ireland and beyond affected by the coronavirus outbreak continues to grow by the hour.

    Within the last hour, the Six Nations confirmed that this weekend's games involving Ireland's women and the under-20s are also now off. That followed Monday's announcement of the postponement of the men's game in Paris.
