    Northern Ireland 4-0 Latvia

OK, so the first half might have been a bit edgy, but a 4-0 win was just what Northern Ireland would have wanted on their much-heralded return to Windsor Park.

The crowd may not have been as big as manager Kenny Shiels had hoped for, but it was enthusiastic nonetheless and gave the women's side the ovation they deserved at the final whistle.

The bigger picture, of course, was World Cup qualification points and that is now six from six in their opening two qualifiers, and a run that reads eight wins from their last eight competitive matches.

Next up is the small matter of England at Wembley. We'll look forward to that when it comes, but for now, thanks for joining us.

Winning breeds winning. Kenny Shiels has been so brave and wants his players to be comfortable in possession. He has been able to show the depth of his squad and the girls have showed their maturity, they know they have to perform because there are so many young players in the squad who can come in and take their places if they don't.

They were made to work from that but, in the end, that was a professional performance.

The players go over and show their support to the home crowd, who were in fine voice all night and there's a hardy rendition of Sweet Caroline to round things off.

Next up, it's England at Wembley before a crucial showdown with Austria!

It's another 4-0 win for Northern Ireland on a significant night for the women's international team as they returned to Windsor Park for the first time in nine years.

After beating Luxembourg by the same scoreline on Friday, it is now six points from six for Kenny Shiels' side from their opening two World Cup qualifiers.

Louise McDaniel, captain Kirsty McGuinness, Marissa Callaghan and Rachel Furness were the goalscorers after the teams went into level at the break.

Job done again for Northern Ireland in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

It was in the script for tonight wasn't it.

Kirsty McGuinness celebrates having the captain's armband on her 50th cap with this fine strike for Northern Ireland's second.

No surprise to see the ball end up in the net when she shoots with that left foot.

It wouldn't be a Northern Ireland win these days without a Rachel Furness goal would it?

The Liverpool star missed a penalty against Luxembourg on Friday but she made no mistake with her spot-kick tonight, sweeping the ball home confidently.

    There's the third!

It's all about the ball from Demi Vance. It's a brilliant delivery in from the left and Callaghan just has to get a touch on it to bundle it home.

That's three in her last three competitive games for Northern Ireland. Prolific.

Northern Ireland are home in a boat now as Marissa Callaghan makes it 3-0.

Demi Vance's low delivery from the left was superb and Callaghan guided it home from close range to surely put the game beyond the visitors in the 78th minute.

Rachel Furness will probably feel she should have scored there.

She did well to burst into the box but was on the stretch and got underneath her header, sending the ball over the crossbar from close range.

On a night she has taken the armband that was a big captain's goal from McGuinness on her 50th cap.

She kept her cool and it was a brilliant finish from a tight angle to put daylight between the sides.

That should take some of the pressure off with 25 minutes to go.

It just had to happen, didn't it.

Captain-for-the-night Kirsty McGuinness gets Northern Ireland's second on what is her 50th appearance.

And even more fitting that it was regular skipper Marissa Callaghan who played her in with beautifully-weighted pass, with McGuinness taking her time before hammering home a low angled drive off the inside of the post.

Lauren Wade likes cutting in from the right on to that left foot of hers.

This time she caught her shot well but visiting keeper Enija-Anna Valvode got down well to save at her near post.

What a moment for Louise McDaniel, one of the most popular players in this squad and that's a goal she'll never forget!

Just like Emily Wilson on Friday, you can see what that means from the celebration!

  20. goal

GOALpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

Louise McDaniel opens the scoring for Northern Ireland with a history-making goal.

It arrived three minutes into the second and it was a fine strike after the ball fell to her off Marissa Callaghan, with McDaniel finding the top corner with her strike.

It was a first international goal for the midfielder and the first time a Northern Ireland senior women's international has scored a goal at Windsor Park.
