  7. Geezer backs League finals despite busy calendarpublished at 15:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Allianz Football League

Like we assume Mickey Harte, Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney seems to be quite happy about his side being involved in a League final in two weeks.

That's even though the Orchard men will have only a fortnight's gap between their Division Two decider against Donegal and their Ulster SFC opener against Fermanagh at Brewster Park.

Geezer also had a rather entertaining pop at the players of the past who in their punditry roles like to put the boot into the modern game.

  8. Armagh and Donegal promoted to Division Onepublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Allianz Football League

The promotion places in Division Two are done and dusted after Armagh ruthlessly ended Cavan's hopes of ascent and Donegal got the job done against Kildare - a result that relegated the Lilywhites.

Fermanagh, meanwhile, slipped into the relegation spots in Division Two after being hit for six goals by Louth as they suffered a fourth successive defeat and even victory over Cavan at Breffni Park next weekend may not be enough to save Kieran Donnelly's side.

In Division Three meanwhile, Antrim are anxiously looking over their shoulder after being further sucked into the relegation mire as they endured a fourth straight defeat when losing to Clare in Ennis.

The Saffrons will be safe if they avoid defeat against Wicklow at Corrigan Park next weekend but another loss could well see Oisin McConville's side surviving, with Antrim back in Division Four, although Offaly are also part of the relegation equation.

Here's our Division Two and Three round-up from yesterday.

  9. Down lead Westmeath by one in Mullingarpublished at 15:38 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Westmeath 0-3 Down 0-4 (15:00 GMT)

It's a low-scoring cagey affair so far in the Division Three top-of-the-table tussle in Mullingar with Down edging into a 0-4 to 0-3 lead at half-time. We'll keep you posted on that one.

  10. Glass returns for Derry's trip to Mayopublished at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Mayo v Derry (15.45 GMT)

Kerry's win over Roscommon in today's early game means Derry can't seal their place in the Division One final with victory over Mayo in MacHale Park this afternoon, but they would have one foot in the decider should they prevail.

Having rested a number of players for the defeat to Dublin a fortnight back, Mickey Harte has opted to restore some back to the line-up with Conor Glass back at midfield for Emmett Bradley.

In the Oak Leaf defence, Eoin McEvoy and Padraig McGrogan replace Shea Downey and Eunan Mulholland, while Odhran Lynch starts in goal ahead of Ryan Scullion in one of several changes to the listed team.

Ethan Doherty, Paul Cassidy and Niall Loughlin are set to start in the forwards in place of Niall Toner, Declan Cassidy and Cormac Murphy.

Mayo manager Kevin McStay makes three changes from the team that beat Roscommon two weeks ago. Aaron McDonnell is set for his first league start having been named at corner back in place of Jack Coyne.

Matthew Ruane comes in for Eoghan McLaughlin at midfield, while in attack, Tommy Conroy gets the nod over Paul Towey.

    Mayo: C Reape; A McDonnell, R Brickenden, S Callinan; D McHugh, S Coen, E Hession; J Carney, M Ruane; B Tuohy, F Boland, J Flynn; A O'Shea, T Conroy, R O'Donoghue.

    Subs: R Hennelly, C Reid, J Coyne, C Hunt, F Irwin, C Loftus, F Kelly, E O’Donoghue, M Plunkett, K Quinn, P Towey

    Derry: O Lynch; C McCluskey, C McKaigue, D Baker; G McKinless, E McEvoy, P McGrogan; C Glass, B Rogers; E Doherty, C McFaul, P Cassidy; N Loughlin S McGuigan, L Murray.

    Subs: R Scullion, M Doherty, M Downey, S Downey, N Toner, D Gilmore, C McGuckian, C McMonagle, E Mulholland, D Cassidy, C Murphy

  11. Monaghan's decade-long Division One stay endspublished at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Allianz Football League

As we said, Saturday was a bumper day of Football League action and it witnessed Monaghan's decade-long stay in Division One finally coming to an end as Tyrone - following Roscommon's defeat earlier today - ultimately secured survival by beating the Farney men 1-19 to 2-13 in Omagh.

Monaghan have produced so many escape acts in recent years but they finally ran out of road at Healy Park as Darragh Canavan's 1-5 and Darren McCurry's 0-6 sealed the Farney men's fate.

  12. Derry aim to edge closer to League Final spotpublished at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March

    Mayo v Derry (15:45 GMT)

After a busy Saturday, today is a quieter affair in the Allianz Football League but a few up and downs can still be decided this afternoon.

We're concentrating on the game in Castlebar when Derry can edge closer to a place in the Division One Final by beating Mayo.

While there has been much talk in recent weeks about teams wanting to avoid the extra game in advance of championship that a league decider entails, Mickey Harte usually has no truck with that kind of thinking.

In any case, Derry would have a three-week gap until their blockbuster Ulster SFC opener against Donegal so we can surely assume Mickey wants his men to overcome Kevin McStay's side at MacHale Park and put themselves on the brink of the final, with Dublin and Kerry the other sides still in contention to be involved.

The Kingdom were in action today against Roscommon and Jack O'Connor's side clinched a 1-17 to 1-14 victory which puts the Rossies on the brink on the drop, though still alive going into next weekend as they aim to escape ahead of Galway, with Tyrone now safe following today's result at Dr Hyde Park.

We'll also have updates from Down's Division Three clash in Mullingar against a Westmeath side that also go into the contest with a 100% record.
