Great Britain captain Kate Richardson-Walsh on BBC TV: “It is very special. To see Helen go through double back surgery, the strength and resilience she has shown resonates through the whole squad.
“It honestly and truly comes from every single person in this squad. Everyone who touches this squad has it and it is infectious. We wanted to be the difference, create history and inspire the future and we have done it."
Asked about her future in the sport, she said: “This is it, 100 per cent. We are going to retire as reigning Olympic champions and it is a good way to go out.”

Women's pole vault final
The first medal of the night in the stadium comes in the women's pole vault, which gets under way at 00:30 BST.
The best vaulter in the world this year has been defending champ Jennifer Suhr, and she will start as favourite.
Last year's world champion Yarisley Silva is a danger, while GB's Holly Bradshaw will have to top her season's best of 4.65m to challenge.

Great Britain's Lutalo Muhammad is guaranteed at least a silver medal in the men's taekwondo -80kg after he defeated Milad Beigi Harchegani of Azerbaijan to reach the final.
The 25-year-old Londoner beat the European champion 12-7 after taking control of a tense and edgy contest.
He will face Cheick Sallah Cisse of Ivory Coast in the final, which takes place at 02:15 BST on Saturday.
Muhammad is looking to improve on the bronze medal he won in 2012.
