'People would stare at the pool' - Dearingpublished at 00:08 British Summer Time 4 August 2021

Dearing was born in Birmingham and started swimming aged seven or eight when her mum, who is Ghanaian and a keen swimmer, took her.

“She’d be the one taking me training and to competitions, and she would literally be one of two black people at the pool along with me – people would see us together and just stare," she recalls.

"My mum was like: ‘It must be because you are so small and then you swim so well.’ But maybe we were being naive.”

As mentioned earlier, Alice Dearing has become the first black woman to represent Great Britain in swimming at the Olympics today.

The 24-year-old is competing in the women's 10km. Back in February 2020, Dearing spoke to BBC Sport about breaking down stereotypes in swimming.

“It's a shame it's taken until 2021 to happen, but I'm excited to have broken that barrier," she said.

"I really hope it will inspire thousands more people to look and think 'Well she's got Afro hair, she’s black and she's not that tall, but she's doing swimming and has made it to the Olympics for Britain', so I can give it a go.”

It's is day 12 of the Games in Tokyo and the end is rapidly coming into sight.

As much as it has been about the sporting action the Olympics has also been about the stories behind many of the athletes we have become familiar with over the last couple of weeks.

We've only just started our live text commentary and history has already been made with Alice Dearing becoming GB's first black Olympic female swimmer. She's competing in marathon swimming right now, which you can watch on BBC Red Button and online.
