  1. A Magic Weekend in Newcastle

    Salford v Widnes

Thanks for your company during this, the ninth edition of Magic Weekend.

We've had four hat-tricks, a red card, plenty of points, great comebacks and a thrilling last-gasp draw over the past two days.

A record cumulative attendance of almost 68,000 would suggest Newcastle has been an excellent host.

Remember, you can watch highlights of all this weekend's action on the Super League Show tomorrow night at 23:25 BST on BBC One, and throughout the week on the BBC iPlayer.

  2. Post update

    FT: Castleford 56-16 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

Castleford Tigers winger Denny Solomona, who scored four tries, told Sky Sports: "It was pretty good and a great atmosphere in Newcastle.

"They came out firing and we expected that. We just needed to stick to our game plan. We let them back in and they rocked the boat from there."

  3. Post update

    FT: Castleford 56-16 Wakefield

    James Deighton

    BBC Radio Leeds commentator

"That's as comprehensive a result as we've seen at any Magic Weekend. Wakefield left to lick their wounds, Castleford back to winning ways and they're purring once again."

  4. Full time

    Castleford 56-16 Wakefield

Castleford Tigers have thrashed Super League's bottom side Wakefield, running in 10 tries to complete this exhausting, exhilarating Magic Weekend in Newcastle.

  5. TRY (Gibson, goal Gale)

    Castleford 56-16 Wakefield

Well, the video referee makes the call on something that was plain to see. Ashley Gibson stretches over to complete his treble.

Just moments earlier, it looked as if Liam Finn was going to notch up one of his own, but somehow he slipped and was wrapped up.

  6. Post update

    Castleford 50-16 Wakefield

Ashley Gibson for a hat-trick of his own now?

  7. TRY (Gale, goal Gale)

    Castleford 50-16 Wakefield

    Wakefield

Denny Solomona can make them as well as he can finish them. The winger explodes through Wakefield's defensive line, then links up with Oliver Holmes, who then moves the ball onto Luke Gale to score.

Gale steps up to knock over the conversion and bring up a half century for the Tigers. Wakefield look well beaten.

  8. Post update

    Castleford 44-16 Wakefield

Staring down a potential record-making try, Denny Solomona is bundled into touch.

    Put that milestone on hold...

  9. Post update

    Castleford 44-16 Wakefield

Castleford are just easing through their sets at the moment. They eat through 69 metres before putting in a kick that Chris Riley collects in goal. It's a goal-line dropout and the attack is on again.

  10. Post update

    Castleford 44-16 Wakefield

Line up Tigers, the try line is begging. Nathan Massey knocks on as Castleford close in again.

  11. Post update

    Castleford 44-16 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

Two players have scored five tries in a Magic Weekend fixture before - Warrington's Joel Monaghan and Leeds' Danny McGuire, both in Manchester three years ago.

Denny Solomona has four tries already - is he about to join that select group?

  12. TRY (Solomona, goal Gale)

    Castleford 44-16 Wakefield

Luke Gale with the high kick and between them Richard Owen and Tom Johnstone make a mess of it. Waiting to pounce is Denny Solomona, who is having a crackerjack day, to get his fourth try.

  13. Post update

    Castleford 38-16 Wakefield

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"Ashley Gibson, with a one-handed grip, finds the corner and it's great skill from him."

  14. TRY (Gibson, goal Gale)

    Castleford 38-16 Wakefield

Castleford centre Jake Webster holds two defenders at bay a few metres out and, with a spin, finds Ashley Gibson lurking. The winger goes in for his second score in quick succession.

  15. Post update

    Castleford 32-16 Wakefield

Castleford hooker Adam Milner leaves the field holding onto his nose in an attempt to stem a stream of blood. It has been a tough old day for combatants today.

Milner had come on early to replace Scott Moore, who went off after a head clash with Scott Anderson.

  16. Post update

    Castleford 32-16 Wakefield

Is that sixth Castleford Tigers try enough to break Wakefield's resolve?

It is a long way back for the Wildcats, but we have seen some great fightbacks today, from Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield sharing the spoils to St Helens overcoming Warrington.

  17. TRY (Gibson)

    Castleford 32-16 Wakefield

    Castleford fans

That kick-off allows Castleford to go back up field and pile the pressure on.

Mike McMeeken does a step and shuffle with tacklers gathering around him and then he finds Jake Webster who pushes the ball to Ashley Gibson to sneak over unchallenged.

  18. Post update

    Castleford 28-16 Wakefield

Wakefield's kick-off is long, too long, and goes dead to put Castleford back in possession.

  19. Post update

    Castleford 28-16 Wakefield

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"Oh dear. It was a nice kick from Luke Gale, took a check of a bounce and Denny Solomona wasn't that interested in the first 10 metres. He upped his pace and Richard Owen's come up with an error that really hurts his team. He perhaps took too much time and his team have paid the price."

  20. TRY (Solomona, goal Gale)

    Castleford 28-16 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

Luke Gale kick to the corner bounces awkwardly and holds up in front of Richard Owen and the Wakefield winger slips to see Denny Solomona run in his hat-trick.

  21. Post update

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

Wakefield receive a goal-line drop-out after Jordan Tansey fails to deal with a kick from Tim Smith.

  22. Post update

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

Castleford's Jordan Tansey too eager with the try line in sight and as he tried to pull himself up to meet a pass he slips and the attack comes to nothing.

  23. Post update

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    Ashley Gibson

Controlled early exchanges in the second half, but both Castleford and Wakefield attacks lack real bite.

Adam Milner tried to force a pass out the back of a tackle when the Tigers were in good position and a kick from Pita Godinet was easily collected by Castleford's defence.

  24. Kick-off

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

And Castleford get the last half of action under way with a long kick into Wakefield territory.

  25. Post update

    HT: Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

How much heart can Brian Smith take from that first-half showing?

Yes, Super League's bottom side were exposed too easily and too often, but they have recovered to show genuine fight. And, of course, there is the superb talent of Tom Johnstone to smile about.

  26. Wakefield appoint Smith

    HT: Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    Brian Smith

If you missed it a little earlier on, Wakefield have announced that Brian Smith has agreed to become their new head coach.

Click here for more on the 61-year-old's appointment.

  27. Get involved using #bbcrl

St Helens prop Alex Walmsley on Twitter: "Highlight of my Magic Weekend has to be doing the Alan Shearer celebration at the end of the game with Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook at the Gallowgate End."

  28. Record Magic Weekend attendance

    Magic Weekend

Confirmation of a record Magic Weekend attendance - there are almost 27,000 inside St James' Park today, making a total of 67,788 over the two days.

  29. Post update

    HT: Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"If two quick tries go in, even the neutrals think twice about hanging around and consider getting back on the A1. But Wakefield have come back and shown that they can play in spells."

  30. Post update

    HT: Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

Wakefield went three quick tries down, but have recovered here at St James Park and go into the break just six points down.

Tom Johnston has grabbed a brace for the Wildcats after Denny Solomona had bagged two of his own early on.

  31. Half-time

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

Typical of that first half there was the threat of a try right to the last.

Denny Solomona with a fabulous great down the wing, but the play peters out with the siren sounding and possession relinquished.

  32. Post update

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    James Deighton

    BBC Radio Leeds commentator

"Wakefield hit back. Quick hands and numbers give Tom Johnstone his second try, and the Wildcats just will not go away."

  33. TRY (Johnstone)

    Castleford 22-16 Wakefield

    Tom Johnstone

Try saver at one end then strolls one in at the other. Tom Johnstone dots the ball down without a defender in sight.

  34. Post update

    Castleford 22-12 Wakefield

    No try.

On his tip toes, Denny Solomona dances down the touchline and does everything in his power to get over the line. The pressure from Tom Johnstone is just enough to deny him what would have been a fine treble.

There's still plenty of time for him to complete a hat-trick today, though.

  35. Post update

    Castleford 22-12 Wakefield

Denny Solomona to complete his hat-trick?

  36. TRY (Shenton, goal Gale)

    Castleford 22-12 Wakefield

    Michael Shenton

After pinning Wakefield back on their line, Castleford move the ball patiently before moving the ball out wide quickly to find Michael Shenton. He still had all the work to do as he palmed off the attention of Tom Johnstone before crossing over.

  37. Post update

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

Castleford's Jake Webster is getting some medical attention after he seems to catch the shoulder of Matt Ryan in a tackle.

He is rattled, but is passed clear to remain on the pitch.

  38. Post update

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

After some positive early reports, it now also seems that the day is done for Castleford hooker Scott Moore after he also went off with a bloodied head in his clash with Scott Anderson.

  39. Wakefield appoint Smith

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

    Nathan Middleton

BBC Sport at St. James' Park

Warrington head coach Tony Smith could not hide his frustration when speaking to the press after his side's narrow defeat by St Helens, even when asked about his brother Brian taking over at Wakefield.

"I'm not really into that at the moment," he said. "I love my brother to death and I'm pleased for him, but we're talking about today."

  40. Post update

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

    Castleford v Wakefield

    Wakefield have settled nicely now.

Those three tries looked as if the stuffing would be knocked out of Super League's bottom side, but with two quick tries they are now matching Castleford.

  41. Post update

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

The latest on the injury front and Wakefield's Scott Anderson is not likely to return now that medics have given him a once over.

  42. Post update

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"It just shows that when a team stick to basic things, simple things can work. The kick was alright, but they had challengers for the first time in this half.

"Things can happen. You just wish that they could have done that right from the start."

  43. TRY (D Smith, goal Miller)

    Castleford 16-12 Wakefield

    Daniel Smith

There is a collision and Castleford's Ashley Gibson goes down as he attempts to take a high kick.

Daniel Smith picks up the scraps and is through for Wakefield's second try.

  44. TRY (Johnstone, goal Miller)

    Castleford 16-6 Wakefield

    Tom Johnstone

Brilliant foresight from Tom Johnstone as he takes an intercept and races more than 75 metres to hit back for Wakefield.

  45. Post update

    Castleford 16-0 Wakefield

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"It's a tough situation Wakefield are in. It's more worrying as a coach to have players under-working, but you can also over-work. Paul McShane thinks it's going out wide and works really hard to help his defenders, but Michael Shenton steps on the inside and goes through the middle."

Live commentary continues on BBC Radio Leeds via the Live Coverage tab.

  46. Post update

    Castleford 16-0 Wakefield

If new boss Brian Smith is watching, he must be thinking that he has his work cut out for him if he is to save Wakefield from finishing rock bottom of Super League this season.

  47. TRY (Tansey, goal Gale)

    Castleford 16-0 Wakefield

    Jordan Tansey

Michael Shenton makes the break straight through the guts of Wakefield's feeble resistance and looks right where Jordan Tansey collects a pass and strolls it over.

  48. Post update

    Castleford 10-0 Wakefield

Reports coming through and seems both Castleford's Scott Moore and Wakefield's Scott Anderson could return to the field today despite going off after a bloody clash early on.

  49. TRY (Solomona)

    Castleford 10-0 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

From the resulting scrum Castleford make light work of Wakefield's resistance.

Denny Solomona gets hold of a bit of a looped pass, but he is too elusive to be slowed down and goes in for a second time.

  50. Post update

    Castleford 6-0 Wakefield

Richard Owen gifts Castleford attacking possession in dangerous territory with a poor knock-on. He had time and the bounce should not have bamboozled him like it did.

  51. Post update

    Castleford 6-0 Wakefield

That conversion from Luke Gale from the touchline sees the stand-off bring up 1,000 career points.

  52. TRY (Solomona, goal Gale)

    Castleford 6-0 Wakefield

    Denny Solomona

Flowing play for Castleford and the final ball is dished out to Denny Solomona, who contorts his body just right to touch down before going into touch.

  53. Post update

    Castleford 0-0 Wakefield

Horrendous head clash here between Castleford's Scott Moore and Wakefield's Scott Anderson.

Both players leave the field bloodied to get treatment.

  54. Kick-off

    Castleford 0-0 Wakefield

A tinge of sadness comes with kick-off for game six of Magic Weekend. It's our last one, after all.

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

Well that is one way to get your fans pumped up for a game, name a coach of the quality of Brian Smith as new boss just before taking the field.

  56. Daddy duties for Roberts

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

    Ben Roberts

Playmaker Ben Roberts misses out for Castleford Tigers today with good reason as his wife is in labour with their second child.

  57. Wakefield appoint Smith

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter told Sky Sports: "He is a worldwide name in rugby league and he comes with the highest pedigree, and it is a real coup for a club like Wakefield to attract someone of his ilk.

"He sent a text message through our former coach James Webster, who passed that on to me. I had a couple of chats with Brian over the phone and he spoke well about what he wanted to achieve.

"We had a really high calibre of candidates but having spoken to Brian it was an easy decision to make."

  58. 100 games a Wildcat

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

    Danny Kirmond

Captain Danny Kirmond starts for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and notches up 100 appearances for the club.

Never has a milestone occasion seemed more important to mark with a win - the last fixture of Magic Weekend and a new boss, Brian Smith, to impress.

  59. Line-ups

Castleford: Tansey; Gibson, Webster, Shenton, Solomona; Finn, Gale; Lynch, Moore, Millington, Holmes, McMeeken, Massey.

    Referee: Joe Cobb.

  60. BreakingBrian Smith appointed Wakefield coach

Former Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith has been named coach of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats until the end of the season.

The Wildcats are bottom of Super League after 15 games, so the hugely experienced Australian's arrival will be vital.

Smith is the brother of Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith. He was also named NRL coach of the year in 2010.

  61. Post update

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

We have been spoiled with two enthralling encounters and now we have Super League bottom side Wakefield Wildcats, a side that has lost 13 of their last 14 games, come up against Castleford side intent on getting back into the top eight.

Stakes are high, no doubt, especially with news of a new coaching appointment for Wakefield expected to break.

  62. Five down, one to go...

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

So, two really close games so far on Sunday. A draw between Catalans and Huddersfield, and just four points between St Helens and Warrington.

On paper, our last game should be a little more one-sided.

Can Wakefield cause a surprise against Castleford? Andrew Aloia will guide you through the final match of the 2015 Magic Weekend.

  63. Post update

FT: St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens go back up to second in the table with that win, back above Wigan and a point behind Super League leaders Leeds.

  64. Post update

FT: St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

    Ray French

    BBC Radio Merseyside

"What a match, what tension, what effort from both sides in that last six or seven minutes.

"It could have gone either way. That Tommy Makinson tackle, when he came off that line, I've not seen one as effective for many, many years."

  65. Post update

FT: St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens hooker James Roby tells Sky Sports: "We said at half-time that we needed to rectify a few wrongs and dig deep because we know Warrington are a fantastic team. It was a big defensive effort in that second half.

"It probably wasn't the fanciest game to watch but we're not bothered as long as we win and get the two points."

  66. Full time

    St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

Tommy Makinson puts his body on the line to force a knock-on. Saints back in possession, and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook celebrates as if the match is won. It nearly is, but Saints knock on themselves.

The hooter goes before the scrum can be set up and St Helens win!

  67. Post update

    St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

Chris Bridge with a little break almost breaks the St Helens line. One tackle left worked wide to the left, Gene Ormsby tackled to the floor, penalty Warrington! Offside against Travis Burns!

    Repeat set for Warrington...

  68. Post update

    St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

We had a dramatic finish to the Catalans-Huddersfield game earlier today - are we in for something similar here?

Warrington get a penalty and make it into the St Helens half. They're 10 metres out with two tackles left. Declan Patton's kick through just evades Ryan Atkins. Desperate defending from Matty Fleming.

Goal-line dropout for St Helens with two minutes left.

  69. Post update

    St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

A wonderful carry from James Roby gains valuable metres for St Helens. They're back in Warrington territory and Jon Wilkin goes for the drop goal but his attempt at a one-pointer sails wide.

  70. PENALTY (Makinson)

    St Helens 20-16 Warrington Wolves

    Tommy Makinson

Interesting. Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook gets the ball stolen illegally in the tackle and St Helens get a penalty, which they opt to kick.

Tommy Makinson slots it over to give Saints a four-point lead. But Warrington are far from out of this. Far from it.

  71. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

    Ray French

    BBC Radio Merseyside

"I still think it is anybody's game. There is sufficient quality in these sides. Anyone can pick up a try."

  72. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

    No try.

Stefan Ratchford's wonderful break created the chance for Gene Ormsby, who acrobatically touched down in the corner after catching Ratchford's whipped pass out wide.

But Ben Harrison passed the ball to Ratchford having been held down in the tackle, and the try is ruled out.

  73. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

Are Warrington in front with one of the tries of the weekend? We're back up to the video referee...

  74. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

Yet another superb claim of a high kick from St Helens winger Tommy Makinson. Much is made of his finishing ability, but few are better in Super League at that particular skill.

  75. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens were short on defensive numbers on their left, but a huge hit on Chris Bridge by Adam Swift kills the Warrington attack stone dead.

  76. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

An inventive reverse kick forward by Warrington's Chris Bridge forces Adam Swift to concede a goal-line dropout.

  77. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

    St Helens v Warrington

Fifteen minutes remain. St Helens two points clear. It's anyone's guess how this one will end up.

  78. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

All the momentum with St Helens now, but Warrington are able to quell any danger as Kyle Amor drops the ball in the tackle and the Wolves remain two points behind.

  79. Post update

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

    Ray French

    BBC Radio Merseyside

"It is a try and was well deserved by St Helens but I think they will be talking about that for quite some time."

  80. TRY (Wilkin, goal Makinson)

    St Helens 18-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens captain Jon Wilkin puts his side ahead for the first time. He barges his way over from close range, and Tommy Makinson kicks the extra two.

That passage of play all started with Roy Asotasi's high-risk and misplaced offload.

  81. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

Travis Burns' kick ricochets off James Laithwaite and St Helens have six more tackles 10 metres out. Jon Wilkin claims a try - is he over?

  82. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

Warrington prop Roy Asotasi tries a high-risk offload deep in his own half and it doesn't come off, gifting St Helens an attacking set. Gene Ormsby grounds a grubber kick in goal, but Saints will come forward on the attack again. The tension is rising here, with only four points separating the sides as we approach the hour mark.

  83. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

Tommy Makinson goes oh so close to a try. He leaps highest to claim a high ball and, as he stretches out to ground the ball, he's bundled into touch.

  84. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

    Nathan Middleton

BBC Sport at St. James' Park

    Paul Wellens

"St Helens' legend Paul Wellens, who is injured at the moment, is helping his team from the sidelines today. Earpiece in, he's working with the coaching staff on the touchline passing on advice when the replacements come on."

  85. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

Chance wasted as a Warrington pass goes astray near the try line. And then the Wolves give away a penalty to relieve all of the pressure on Saints.

  86. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

This could be a big moment, as Adam Swift spills the ball in the tackle. Warrington scrum, about 30 metres out.

  87. Post update

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

    Ray French

    BBC Radio Merseyside

    Jon Wilkin tackled

"That all came from a wild pass really. We know what was intended by Jon Wilkin, but it didn't appear to go there. But the man of the moment, Jordan Turner, picked it up and made good use of it."

  88. TRY (Swift)

    St Helens 12-16 Warrington Wolves

That penalty leads to St Helens scoring their first try of the second period. Jordan Turner bursts through the tackle of Ben Westwood and then passes wide to winger Adam Swift, who is absolutely lethal from 10 metres out. Game on again.

  89. Post update

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

Penalty to St Helens as Warrington interfere illegally at the play-the-ball. Saints with a full set just inside the Wolves' half.

  90. Post update

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens centre Jordan Turner is such an elusive runner. He's just short of the line after an excellent break, and when the ball is switched to the right side, Tommy Makinson can't clutch a low pass.

  91. Post update

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

    Ray French

    BBC Radio Merseyside

"Warrington had an open try after just 20 seconds, but they have not only contrived to lose the ball but Saints, thanks to heroic defence in the corner, have actually come up with the ball."

  92. Post update

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

Oh my word, what a start to the second half that nearly was for Warrington.

Richie Myler sprints through a huge gap in the Saints defence and is caught just short of the line. A bit of juggling from about four Wolves players as they try to keep the ball alive, and eventually the chance disappears.

  93. Kick-off

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

St Helens get us back under way with a kick long into Warrington territory.

  94. Super League Show

  95. Post update

HT: St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

    Nathan Middleton

BBC Sport at St. James' Park

"Superb Warrington defence to close out the half in a 40 minutes where they've certainly had the edge with ball in hand.

"Ryan Atkins got his obligatory try at Magic Weekend - the centre has scored in every time it has been played since 2010.

"St Helens' half-backs are yet to really get in the game and have not been the creative force Keiron Cunningham will have wanted."

  97. And still to come...

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

    James Webster

There's one more game still to be played this Magic Weekend, with Castleford facing bottom-of-the-table Wakefield at 17:30 BST.

The Wildcats have lost their last 12 Super League matches but are set to announce their new head coach half an hour before kick-off.

James Webster left Belle Vue earlier this month following the club's Challenge Cup defeat by Championship side Leigh.

  98. Earlier on...

FT: Catalans Dragons 22-22 Huddersfield Giants

Huddersfield snatched a 22-22 draw with Catalans in Sunday's first match.

Two Jodie Broughton tries put the Giants 16-0 ahead, but 22 unanswered points gave the Dragons what appeared to be a match-winning lead.

However, Jermaine McGillvary dived over in the final seconds and Danny Brough kicked the resulting goal from the touchline to earn a share of the spoils.

    Warrington fans

"It was a very good half for a neutral spectator or anyone coming to watch rugby league.

"They have seen some good flowing rugby and good tries and some very, very hard tackling.

"I think Warrington are deservedly in the lead. They have been a little bit more inventive and a little more sharper."

  100. Half-time

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

It's Warrington who lead at the break.

Stefan Ratchford and Ben Harrison crossed to give the Wolves an early lead, and although St Helens got a try back through Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and levelled with a Tommy Makinson penalty, Ryan Atkins' score and a Chris Bridge kick have given Tony Smith's side an eight-point advantage.

  101. Post update

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

Ben Westwood holds down in the tackle to give St Helens another penalty. They kick to touch and start a set 10 metres out. On the third tackle, Adam Swift is bundled out of play.

    Allan Rooney

    BBC Radio Merseyside

"It was a bad, bad mistake by St Helens. They are lucky it was Benny Westwood, with all due respect to him he doesn't have the pace to go 50 metres.

"If it had been a Richie Myler or Declan Patton or anyone like that, then St Helens would have been looking down the barrel."

  104. PENALTY (Bridge)

    St Helens 8-16 Warrington Wolves

Huge escape for St Helens as an errant pass lands at the feet of Ben Westwood. He tries to send Chris Bridge clear but he's halted. St Helens are penalised for offside and Bridge kicks the two. Could so easily have been six points given away, though.

    Mose Masoe tackled

"James Roby's return from his concussion assessment and Mose Masoe's introduction seems to have just lifted St Helens.

  109. TRY (Atkins, goal Bridge)

    St Helens 8-14 Warrington Wolves

Warrington back in front, stemming the tide of the match, it has to be said. Ryan Atkins gets a short pass and powers over from close range.

Chris Bridge takes over kicking duties and slots over for the extra two.

Since that mammoth win in 2010, Saints have drawn and lost against Wigan, then lost twice to Warrington.

If the Super League champions can end their barren Magic Weekend run today, they'll move back up to second in the table and within a point of leaders Leeds.

  111. PENALTY (Makinson)

    St Helens 8-8 Warrington Wolves

The last thing you want is the giant figure of Mose Masoe racing towards you at full pelt. The big Samoan prop gets Saints on the front foot and they earn a penalty, which Tommy Makinson slots over from 25 metres to level the scores.

  112. Post update

  113. TRY (McCarthy-Scarsbrook, goal Makinson)

    St Helens 6-8 Warrington Wolves

    Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook scores

Right on cue, St Helens cross for the first time. Jon Wilkin sends a kick through and it deflects off a Warrington man, but Stefan Ratchford should deal with it. However, the ball bounces past him and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook gratefully accepts the chance to get Saints on the board.

And James Roby is back on the field, too, after recovering from his injury. A great couple of minutes for the champions.

    St Helens 0-8 Warrington Wolves

"It was the kick from Patton that undid St Helens, they are really playing second fiddle here.

"Warrington asking all the questions with the ball and with the territory. St Helens being caught napping on a couple of occasions now."

  117. TRY (Harrison)

    St Helens 0-8 Warrington Wolves

Warrington go further clear as Ben Harrison gets on the end of Declan Patton's grubber kick to touch down.

  124. TRY (Ratchford)

    St Helens 0-4 Warrington Wolves

That's what Stefan Ratchford does best - the Warrington full-back runs a great line 30 metres out and breaks through the St Helens defence before diving over in the corner. First blood to the Wolves. From the touchline, Ratchford can't add the extras.

FT: Catalans Dragons 22-22 Huddersfield Giants

Huddersfield Giants half-back Jermaine McGillvary, who scored a last-minute try to help seal a draw, told Sky Sports: "It is all credit to Kyle Wood really, it was a great pass and all I had to do was finish it in the corner.

"We made hard work of it today, we were cruising in the first half and then we shut up shop and thought we had won the game.

"Credit to Catalans, they came back at us and it was probably a fair result."

FT: Catalans Dragons 22-22 Huddersfield Giants

Catalans Dragons half-back Scott Dureau told Sky Sports: "It is one of those tough ones, we were horrible in the first half, we gave away so many penalties. To our credit we came back into it.

"I think we should have won it, I missed that kick from really close at the end."

  139. Post update

FT: Catalans Dragons 22-22 Huddersfield Giants

At 22-16, Scott Dureau missed the simplest of kicks at goal to put the Dragons more than a score clear. How important has that failure proved to be?

Incidentally, that's the second draw in the history of Magic Weekend. The first was between St Helens and Wigan in 2011.

  140. Full time

Pulsating action. Huddersfield probing Catalans Dragons' try line a few times now, but they can't make the breakthrough. Yet.

  147. Post update

    Catalans Dragons 22-16 Huddersfield Giants

And that try was Todd Carney's last real involvement in the game as he leaves the field with an apparent chest injury after putting a high hit on Kyle Wood.

  148. TRY (Carney)

    Catalans Dragons 22-16 Huddersfield Giants

Todd Carney's effort counts. But there was also certainly reason to discuss a penalty try after Jermaine McGillvary caught Scott Dureau high. It was also McGillvary who knocked the ball out of Dureau's hands.

Instead, Catalans Dragons bank only four points as Dureau misses a simple conversion.

Jermaine McGillvary comes in and catches Catalans half-back Scott Dureau on the head as he tries to stop him from crossing the line.

"It's probably fair to say the neutrals in St James' Park are supporting Catalans - there were big cheers from all sides of the ground when Todd Carney crashed over.

"St Helens' fans have made themselves at home in the Gallowgate End as a number of them launch into a chorus of 'stand up for the champions' in response to the chants at the opposite side of the stadium from the Warrington faithful."

  153. TRY (Taia, goal Dureau)

    Catalans Dragons 18-16 Huddersfield Giants

Zeb Taia with one palm off and a powerful charge to the line. The Australia-born former New Zealand and Cook Islands international carries Scott Grix over the line with him.

And Scott Dureau gives the French side the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Todd Carney with his first try in Super League.

Catalans Dragons take possession from a penalty and with not a lot on, Carney steps through Huddersfield's defence. No outstanding dummy to be thrown or particularly remarkable step needed to make that breakthrough.

  158. Post update

  168. TRY (Pelissier, goal Dureau)

    Catalans Dragons 6-16 Huddersfield Giants

Surprise, surprise - a penalty leads to more points.

This time it is Catalans Dragons who benefit and, with Ian Henderson making enough room for himself to pop a pass out to Eloi Pelissier, the French side have their first points of Magic Weekend.

  169. Milestone for Brough

  171. TRY (Broughton, goal Brough)

    Catalans Dragons 0-16 Huddersfield Giants

    Jodie Broughton scores

After initial indications from referee Ben Thaler, the decision goes upstairs for the video referee to assess Jodie Broughton's effort in the corner.

HT: Catalans Dragons 0-10 Huddersfield Giants

Catalans Dragons have failed to produce anything in the way of meaningful attacking raids.

However, their resolute defensive showing keeps them well and truly in this Magic Weekend contest.

  181. Half-time

    Catalans Dragons 0-10 Huddersfield Giants

Huddersfield Giants have had the best of this scrappy affair.

Danny Brough's two penalties, having earlier added the extras when Jodie Broughton went in for the game's first score, means they have a 10-point lead at the break.

  182. Post update

Morgan Escare spills a high ball for Catalans and Scott Dureau comes in to concede a penalty and just hand Huddersfield another two easy points.

With a swing of the leg, Danny Brough splits the post for the points.

  184. PENALTY (Brough)

"Being so close to the pitch really gives you an insight on how the play is unfolding. Craig Huby is particularly vocal for Huddersfield, leading from the front, giving his players the 'calm down' signal as they grab the first try.

"Catalans' Scott Dureau gives a cry of anguish after kicking the ball out on the full, while there are some thundering hits echoing around St James' Park."

Where could Catalans Dragons' reply possibly come from?

It is not like they don't have the talent to rack up the points, be it Todd Carney, Morgan Escare, Willie Tonga, Zeb Taia. However, you need the ball to actually attack, and right now they are starved of possession.

Danny Brough came up with pin-point kick, and easy as you like Broughton lands the first points of this game in the corner. Brough adds the goal too.

Craig Kopczak looked to have gone over for Huddersfield. But no, we continue to wait.

Giants with the attacking scrum 10 metres out.

And we click over into a fourth successive set for Huddersfield.

How long can Catalans hold the Giants back?

A few sore bodies in there with Dragon Willie Tonga getting some running repairs.

    Jodie Broughton tackled

A run of successive sets for Huddersfield Giants, but some brilliant defending by Catalans keep them at bay.

The pressure is relieved momentarily, but the Giants start all over again near the halfway line.

And that is why Catalans full-back Morgan Escare is rated so highly. His ability to scramble across field to rush the ball into touch with runners closing in and the try line begging was immense.

Ukuma Ta'ai into the game to replace Brett Ferres for Huddersfield.

Not a bad replacement as he has seven tries to his name this season.

    Brett Ferres

"Brett Ferres, after being given a no try for the effort a few minutes ago, has come hobbling back to the Huddersfield bench.

"He is asked by one of the medical team if he can continue. A shake of the head from the England man suggests his game is over."

    Francis Cummins

Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"Ferres is a big loss. We know he's had a problem with his ankle. It's one of those where, if you're a little bit weak in one area, it can affect somewhere else. Hopefully he won't be out too long because he's a player everyone wants to watch."

  200. Post update

    Catalans Dragons 0-0 Huddersfield Giants

How costly is that for Huddersfield as Brett Ferres gets up and is helped off the field with what looks like a knee injury.

And there is some confusion as Huddersfield don't get the try but regain possession. One would have thought it was a knock on but we move on with Catalans with ball in hand.

For the second time today Huddersfield are denied.

Todd Carney makes makes the try-saving intervention, first with a tackle and then to ensure the ball could not be grounded. Real defensive grit there by the Australian half-back to keep out Brett Ferres.

    Fouad Yaha

"Catalans winger Fouad Yaha is the club's new sensation, having made his debut just last month.

"It's just a sixth match as a professional for the 18-year-old, but he has already notched up four tries.

"Speaking to one of the French commentators about Yaha, he said the player has a great future ahead of him. One to keep an eye on."

Apparently Smurfs have butter fingers. A knock-on that looked to have been knocked back by Morgan Escare.

Huddersfield get possession 20 metres out from Catalans' line. But a knock-on of their own and a penalty sees play go deep into Huddersfield territory.

"It's difficult for Catalans' fans to get to games having to travel to England from France every other week, but these characters are firmly behind their team today.

Well that came to absolutely nothing. Huddersfield just run though their six tackles and hand over possession five metres out from Catalans' try line.

  219. Post update

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

Teams are coming out here now at St James' Park and it is a grey, gloomy and, well, a typically inclement day in Newcastle.

Plenty of folks in the crowd are dressed for a party, a poncho or two can be seen in there as well, and they are all bobbing along. However, you quickly realise they are all shuffling to keep warm.

Let's hope the action warms everyone up in a hurry!

  220. Catalans' struggles on the road

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

So far this season, Catalans Dragons have won just one game away from Perpignan. That was a 40-4 victory against Super League's bottom side Wakefield in April.

Catalans have had mixed fortunes at the Magic Weekend over the years, winning four and losing four matches. This is their first Magic Weekend meeting with Huddersfield.

  221. Post update

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

    Nathan Middleton

BBC Sport at St. James' Park

    Magic Weekend

"The Saturday sunshine has been replaced by grey skies and a light drizzle for Catalans against Huddersfield - that hasn't stopped the party atmosphere in the crowd, with plenty of fancy dress and noise being made.

"The morning rain meant a quick wipe down was required in the press box before you could sit down..."

  222. Ferres remains a Giant

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

    Brett Ferres

So often when NRL clubs come knocking, the best and brightest in Super League answer the call.

But Brett Ferres is staying put, having recently extended his contract with Huddersfield Giants until 2019.

The 29-year-old England international forward, who joined the Giants from Castleford, makes his 73rd appearance for the club today.

  223. Keep your eyes on Carney

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

    Todd Carney

A controversial and fascinating figure is probably the easiest way to describe Catalans Dragons half-back Todd Carney.

Sacked by all three National Rugby League clubs that he played for in Australia, the 28-year-old is as famous for his on-field brilliance as he is infamous for his off-field antics.

At his best, he is very, very good. He led Sydney Roosters to the NRL Grand Final in 2010, winning the Dally M Medal as NRL's best and fairest player, while also picking up the international player of the year honour.

So far he has been limited to six Super League appearances because of injury, but a stage like Magic Weekend is just the sort of arena he thrives on.

  224. Line-ups

Catalans Dragons v Huddersfield Giants (13:00 BST)

Catalans: Escare; Oldfield, Gigot, Tonga, Yaha; Carney, Dureau; Elima, Henderson, Casty, Taia, Whitehead, Baitieri.

    Replacements: Anderson, Mounis, Pelissier, Bousquet.

Huddersfield: Grix; McGillvary, Murphy, Connor, Broughton; Brough, Wood; Kopczak, Robinson, Huby, Wardle, Hughes, Ferres.

  225. Wakefield set for new coach?

    Castleford v Wakefield (17:30 BST)

James Webster left the Wildcats earlier this month following their Challenge Cup exit to Championship side Leigh Centurions.

  228. The lie of the land

    Super League Top Six

So here's how the top of the table looks after yesterday's action.

A win for reigning champions St Helens today against Warrington would see them reclaim second spot from Wigan and close to within a point of leaders Leeds.

  229. Saturday recap... part three

    Leeds 12-27 Wigan

    George Williams scores

Wigan climbed to second in Super League after a deserved win over leaders Leeds.

Dan Sarginson opened the scoring for Wigan before Leeds responded with tries from Adam Cuthbertson and Joel Moon.

But Wigan hit back as George Williams went over in the corner before Joe Burgess side-stepped his way to the line.

Matty Bowen ran 80 metres to touch down for Wigan and added another second-half try, capped by Matty Smith's drop goal.

  230. Saturday recap... part two

    Hull FC 46-20 Hull KR

    Hull FC celebrate

Fetuli Talanoa scored the second hat-trick of Magic Weekend as Hull FC exacted derby revenge on Hull KR with a thumping victory.

Eight tries, including winger Talanoa's treble and a double for centre Kirk Yeaman, secured just a second Hull win in seven Magic Weekend derby meetings.

Rovers, who won 20-6 at the KC Stadium last month, failed to contain the Hull pack but did score four tries.

Josh Mantellato and Kieran Dixon both scored twice for Chris Chester's side.

  231. Saturday recap... part one

    Salford 16-38 Widnes

    Kevin Brown

Kevin Brown scored a hat-trick as Widnes opened Magic Weekend by beating 12-man Salford.

Cory Paterson put Salford ahead but Widnes replied with two Patrick Ah Van tries and one from Danny Galea.

Brown finished off a lovely Widnes move before Salford's Darrell Griffin was dismissed for a high shot just before half-time.

Vikings captain Brown got his second try before Greg Johnson and Ben Jones-Bishop cut the deficit, but Brown added his third and Stefan Marsh scored another to seal victory.

  232. Sunday's fixtures

Here's what we've got coming up for you today in the second part of Magic Weekend...

The main course comes at 15:15 BST, when Super League's third-placed side St Helens face Tony Smith's Warrington.

That follows a tasty looking lunchtime offering as Catalans Dragons, fresh from their thrashing of Wigan last weekend, take on Huddersfield (13:00 BST).

Closing proceedings later is the West Yorkshire derby as Wakefield, who have lost their last 12 league games, take on Castleford.

But, before we go any further, here's a look back at Saturday's action.

  233. Post update
