A Magic Weekend in Newcastle

Thanks for your company during this, the ninth edition of Magic Weekend.

We've had four hat-tricks, a red card, plenty of points, great comebacks and a thrilling last-gasp draw over the past two days.

A record cumulative attendance of almost 68,000 would suggest Newcastle has been an excellent host.

Castleford Tigers winger Denny Solomona, who scored four tries, told Sky Sports: "It was pretty good and a great atmosphere in Newcastle.

"They came out firing and we expected that. We just needed to stick to our game plan. We let them back in and they rocked the boat from there."

Castleford Tigers have thrashed Super League's bottom side Wakefield, running in 10 tries to complete this exhausting, exhilarating Magic Weekend in Newcastle.

Well, the video referee makes the call on something that was plain to see. Ashley Gibson stretches over to complete his treble.

Just moments earlier, it looked as if Liam Finn was going to notch up one of his own, but somehow he slipped and was wrapped up.

Denny Solomona can make them as well as he can finish them. The winger explodes through Wakefield's defensive line, then links up with Oliver Holmes, who then moves the ball onto Luke Gale to score.

Gale steps up to knock over the conversion and bring up a half century for the Tigers. Wakefield look well beaten.

Staring down a potential record-making try, Denny Solomona is bundled into touch.

Castleford are just easing through their sets at the moment. They eat through 69 metres before putting in a kick that Chris Riley collects in goal. It's a goal-line dropout and the attack is on again.

Luke Gale with the high kick and between them Richard Owen and Tom Johnstone make a mess of it. Waiting to pounce is Denny Solomona, who is having a crackerjack day, to get his fourth try.

Castleford centre Jake Webster holds two defenders at bay a few metres out and, with a spin, finds Ashley Gibson lurking. The winger goes in for his second score in quick succession.

Castleford hooker Adam Milner leaves the field holding onto his nose in an attempt to stem a stream of blood. It has been a tough old day for combatants today.

Milner had come on early to replace Scott Moore, who went off after a head clash with Scott Anderson.

Is that sixth Castleford Tigers try enough to break Wakefield's resolve?

It is a long way back for the Wildcats, but we have seen some great fightbacks today, from Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield sharing the spoils to St Helens overcoming Warrington.

Mike McMeeken does a step and shuffle with tacklers gathering around him and then he finds Jake Webster who pushes the ball to Ashley Gibson to sneak over unchallenged.

Wakefield's kick-off is long, too long, and goes dead to put Castleford back in possession.

Adam Milner tried to force a pass out the back of a tackle when the Tigers were in good position and a kick from Pita Godinet was easily collected by Castleford's defence.

And Castleford get the last half of action under way with a long kick into Wakefield territory.

How much heart can Brian Smith take from that first-half showing?

Yes, Super League's bottom side were exposed too easily and too often, but they have recovered to show genuine fight. And, of course, there is the superb talent of Tom Johnstone to smile about.

After pinning Wakefield back on their line, Castleford move the ball patiently before moving the ball out wide quickly to find Michael Shenton. He still had all the work to do as he palmed off the attention of Tom Johnstone before crossing over.

Castleford's Jake Webster is getting some medical attention after he seems to catch the shoulder of Matt Ryan in a tackle.

He is rattled, but is passed clear to remain on the pitch.

After some positive early reports, it now also seems that the day is done for Castleford hooker Scott Moore after he also went off with a bloodied head in his clash with Scott Anderson.

Warrington head coach Tony Smith could not hide his frustration when speaking to the press after his side's narrow defeat by St Helens, even when asked about his brother Brian taking over at Wakefield.

"I'm not really into that at the moment," he said. "I love my brother to death and I'm pleased for him, but we're talking about today."

Those three tries looked as if the stuffing would be knocked out of Super League's bottom side, but with two quick tries they are now matching Castleford.

The latest on the injury front and Wakefield's Scott Anderson is not likely to return now that medics have given him a once over.

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter told Sky Sports: "He is a worldwide name in rugby league and he comes with the highest pedigree, and it is a real coup for a club like Wakefield to attract someone of his ilk.

"He sent a text message through our former coach James Webster, who passed that on to me. I had a couple of chats with Brian over the phone and he spoke well about what he wanted to achieve.

"We had a really high calibre of candidates but having spoken to Brian it was an easy decision to make."

BreakingBrian Smith appointed Wakefield coach

Former Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith has been named coach of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats until the end of the season.

The Wildcats are bottom of Super League after 15 games, so the hugely experienced Australian's arrival will be vital.

Smith is the brother of Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith. He was also named NRL coach of the year in 2010.

We have been spoiled with two enthralling encounters and now we have Super League bottom side Wakefield Wildcats, a side that has lost 13 of their last 14 games, come up against Castleford side intent on getting back into the top eight.

Stakes are high, no doubt, especially with news of a new coaching appointment for Wakefield expected to break.

Five down, one to go...

So, two really close games so far on Sunday. A draw between Catalans and Huddersfield, and just four points between St Helens and Warrington.

On paper, our last game should be a little more one-sided.

Stefan Ratchford's wonderful break created the chance for Gene Ormsby, who acrobatically touched down in the corner after catching Ratchford's whipped pass out wide.

Warrington prop Roy Asotasi tries a high-risk offload deep in his own half and it doesn't come off, gifting St Helens an attacking set. Gene Ormsby grounds a grubber kick in goal, but Saints will come forward on the attack again. The tension is rising here, with only four points separating the sides as we approach the hour mark.

Tommy Makinson goes oh so close to a try. He leaps highest to claim a high ball and, as he stretches out to ground the ball, he's bundled into touch.

St Helens centre Jordan Turner is such an elusive runner. He's just short of the line after an excellent break, and when the ball is switched to the right side, Tommy Makinson can't clutch a low pass.

Oh my word, what a start to the second half that nearly was for Warrington.

Richie Myler sprints through a huge gap in the Saints defence and is caught just short of the line. A bit of juggling from about four Wolves players as they try to keep the ball alive, and eventually the chance disappears.

James Webster left Belle Vue earlier this month following the club's Challenge Cup defeat by Championship side Leigh.

Huddersfield snatched a 22-22 draw with Catalans in Sunday's first match.

Two Jodie Broughton tries put the Giants 16-0 ahead, but 22 unanswered points gave the Dragons what appeared to be a match-winning lead.

However, Jermaine McGillvary dived over in the final seconds and Danny Brough kicked the resulting goal from the touchline to earn a share of the spoils.

It's Warrington who lead at the break.

Stefan Ratchford and Ben Harrison crossed to give the Wolves an early lead, and although St Helens got a try back through Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and levelled with a Tommy Makinson penalty, Ryan Atkins' score and a Chris Bridge kick have given Tony Smith's side an eight-point advantage.

Ben Westwood holds down in the tackle to give St Helens another penalty. They kick to touch and start a set 10 metres out. On the third tackle, Adam Swift is bundled out of play.

Warrington's Ben Harrison knocks on near halfway. Saints have one more chance to reduce the deficit before they tuck into their half-time oranges.

Huge escape for St Helens as an errant pass lands at the feet of Ben Westwood. He tries to send Chris Bridge clear but he's halted. St Helens are penalised for offside and Bridge kicks the two. Could so easily have been six points given away, though.

St Helens seek an immediate response but Mark Flanagan can't collect a sharp pass 10 metres out.

Ryan Atkins is one of the few players to have appeared in all eight Magic Weekends. He now has seven Magic Weekend tries, two behind the record set by Ryan Hall of Leeds.

Since that mammoth win in 2010, Saints have drawn and lost against Wigan, then lost twice to Warrington.

If the Super League champions can end their barren Magic Weekend run today, they'll move back up to second in the table and within a point of leaders Leeds.

The last thing you want is the giant figure of Mose Masoe racing towards you at full pelt. The big Samoan prop gets Saints on the front foot and they earn a penalty, which Tommy Makinson slots over from 25 metres to level the scores.

Right on cue, St Helens cross for the first time. Jon Wilkin sends a kick through and it deflects off a Warrington man, but Stefan Ratchford should deal with it. However, the ball bounces past him and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook gratefully accepts the chance to get Saints on the board.

And James Roby is back on the field, too, after recovering from his injury. A great couple of minutes for the champions.

That Saints set of six comes to nothing, though. Plenty for head coach Keiron Cunningham to think about after a first 20 minutes in which the champions have already conceded two tries and have rarely looked like scoring themselves.

St Helens hooker James Roby is down receiving treatment after taking a knock to the head as he tackled Gene Ormsby. Saints will be praying he's back on his feet and able to influence this game in the near future. He's heading off the field for now.

Excellent defending from St Helens winger Adam Swift, who gathers Joel Monaghan's prodded kick forward and dances his way around three Wolves tacklers to get out of his in-goal area.

St Helens have the first real chance, unsurprisingly created by Tommy Makinson. The winger bursts clear down the right and looks to pass inside to Shannon McDonnell, but Warrington forward Ben Currie makes a crucial intervention.

A fairly tepid start so far, with neither side able to get within 20 metres of the try line.

Strong hit on Declan Patton by Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook as the Warrington half-back looks to launch a high kick forward. Welcome to the game, son.

St Helens' first set is ended as captain Jon Wilkin kicks dead, then Warrington reach halfway before kicking deep into Saints' territory. A settling start for both sides.

What a dramatic conclusion to Sunday's first match in Newcastle, with Danny Brough kicking from the touchline to earn Huddersfield a draw with Catalans.

Next up is today's feature game - St Helens v Warrington Wolves.

Huddersfield Giants half-back Jermaine McGillvary, who scored a last-minute try to help seal a draw, told Sky Sports: "It is all credit to Kyle Wood really, it was a great pass and all I had to do was finish it in the corner.

"We made hard work of it today, we were cruising in the first half and then we shut up shop and thought we had won the game.

"Credit to Catalans, they came back at us and it was probably a fair result."

Catalans Dragons half-back Scott Dureau told Sky Sports: "It is one of those tough ones, we were horrible in the first half, we gave away so many penalties. To our credit we came back into it.

"I think we should have won it, I missed that kick from really close at the end."

At 22-16, Scott Dureau missed the simplest of kicks at goal to put the Dragons more than a score clear. How important has that failure proved to be?

Incidentally, that's the second draw in the history of Magic Weekend. The first was between St Helens and Wigan in 2011.

And that try was Todd Carney's last real involvement in the game as he leaves the field with an apparent chest injury after putting a high hit on Kyle Wood.

Todd Carney's effort counts. But there was also certainly reason to discuss a penalty try after Jermaine McGillvary caught Scott Dureau high. It was also McGillvary who knocked the ball out of Dureau's hands.

Instead, Catalans Dragons bank only four points as Dureau misses a simple conversion.

For an hour of this game there wasn't a lot of Todd Carney to be seen.

However, he has ignited proceedings and is held up over the line and denied a second try.

Winger Murphy was on his way down, facing the turf before he tried to slip the ball out. It went to no one and goes out of play. Good chance missed there by the Giants.

While they couldn't buy an attacking threat in the first half, they now seem capable of stretching Huddersfield's defensive line at will.

Hopefully it's too early to be considering these types of records, but Catalans were involved in the lowest scoring match in Magic Weekend history back in 2011, losing 11-4 to Harlequins in Cardiff four years ago.

Where could Catalans Dragons' reply possibly come from?

It is not like they don't have the talent to rack up the points, be it Todd Carney, Morgan Escare, Willie Tonga, Zeb Taia. However, you need the ball to actually attack, and right now they are starved of possession.

That is a sad sight. Brett Ferres with his knee heavily iced. Huddersfield's England forward will play no further part today.

The pressure is relieved momentarily, but the Giants start all over again near the halfway line.

And that is why Catalans full-back Morgan Escare is rated so highly. His ability to scramble across field to rush the ball into touch with runners closing in and the try line begging was immense.

Ukuma Ta'ai into the game to replace Brett Ferres for Huddersfield.

Not a bad replacement as he has seven tries to his name this season.

Teams are coming out here now at St James' Park and it is a grey, gloomy and, well, a typically inclement day in Newcastle.

Plenty of folks in the crowd are dressed for a party, a poncho or two can be seen in there as well, and they are all bobbing along. However, you quickly realise they are all shuffling to keep warm.

Catalans' struggles on the road

So far this season, Catalans Dragons have won just one game away from Perpignan. That was a 40-4 victory against Super League's bottom side Wakefield in April.

Catalans have had mixed fortunes at the Magic Weekend over the years, winning four and losing four matches. This is their first Magic Weekend meeting with Huddersfield.

So often when NRL clubs come knocking, the best and brightest in Super League answer the call.

But Brett Ferres is staying put, having recently extended his contract with Huddersfield Giants until 2019.

The 29-year-old England international forward, who joined the Giants from Castleford, makes his 73rd appearance for the club today.

A controversial and fascinating figure is probably the easiest way to describe Catalans Dragons half-back Todd Carney.

Sacked by all three National Rugby League clubs that he played for in Australia, the 28-year-old is as famous for his on-field brilliance as he is infamous for his off-field antics.

At his best, he is very, very good. He led Sydney Roosters to the NRL Grand Final in 2010, winning the Dally M Medal as NRL's best and fairest player, while also picking up the international player of the year honour.

So far he has been limited to six Super League appearances because of injury, but a stage like Magic Weekend is just the sort of arena he thrives on.

Dan Sarginson opened the scoring for Wigan before Leeds responded with tries from Adam Cuthbertson and Joel Moon.

But Wigan hit back as George Williams went over in the corner before Joe Burgess side-stepped his way to the line.

Matty Bowen ran 80 metres to touch down for Wigan and added another second-half try, capped by Matty Smith's drop goal.

Rovers, who won 20-6 at the KC Stadium last month, failed to contain the Hull pack but did score four tries.

Cory Paterson put Salford ahead but Widnes replied with two Patrick Ah Van tries and one from Danny Galea.

Brown finished off a lovely Widnes move before Salford's Darrell Griffin was dismissed for a high shot just before half-time.

Vikings captain Brown got his second try before Greg Johnson and Ben Jones-Bishop cut the deficit, but Brown added his third and Stefan Marsh scored another to seal victory.
