Mark Aston made himself a huge part of Challenge Cup folklore when he won the Lance Todd Trophy for man of the match in Sheffield Eagles' shock 1998 triumph against Wigan at Wembley.

Tonight, it is his son Cory's turn to try to write a chapter in the history of this famous competition with Featherstone Rovers.

What adds extra spice to it all is that the 22-year-old half-back signed for Leeds this past off-season and is currently on loan at Post Office Road.

It's almost inconceivable that Featherstone, a little town famous for coalmining and less flatteringly described as being little more than a set of traffic lights, has seen its team win three Challenge Cups at Wembley.

It's 50 years since the first Rovers team returned from the twin towers with the precious prize, beating Barrow under skipper Malcolm Dixon and the inspirational presence of coach Laurie Gant.

That team was made up of ordinary working blokes, as documented by former BBC rugby league commentator Eddie Waring in a segment of the documentary 'The Game That Got Away', a number of whom toiled down the local pit.

The Rovers returned to win again in 1973, beating Bradford Northern but lost to Warrington the following season and were then responsible for one of the all-time great Wembley shocks in 1983 when they beat all-conquering Hull FC 14-12 thanks to a last-gasp penalty from the late Steve Quinn.

After going more than a decade without winning the competition, Leeds became the dominant force in the Challenge Cup with wins in 2014 and 2015.

Their 50-0 success against Hull KR at Wembley two years ago was a record margin of victory in a Challenge Cup final.

And the Rhinos, who went out to Huddersfield in the last 16 last season, are just two wins away from making it back to Wembley on 26 August.
