Four tries each, but Danny Richardson's boot just shaded it.

That and those three all-important yellow cards.

And who's to say whether they were all correct calls or not? One to debate in the pub?

St Helens full-back Ben Barba told BBC Sport:

"We were pretty lucky today. What a team, they know how to play, Hull do. They had key players out but kept at it to the end.

"We won't be happy with that performance. Luckily we don't have the semi-final for at least another month.

"It was pretty hot. It made for a great game and both teams came out. It wasn't as pretty as we thought it would be."

St Helens have joined Catalans, Leeds and Warrington in the hat.

That's a repeat of the finals in 2010 and 2012, both won by Wire.

The St Helens-Catalans tie is also a Wembley final repeat, of the 2007 final won by Saints.

Both ties will be played at the same venue on the same day for the first time, at the Macron Stadium, Horwich, home of Bolton Wanderers, on Sunday 5 August.

St Helens coach Justin Holbrook told BBC Sport:

"We were lucky to get away with that.

"Hull put in an enormous performance.

"We're still alive. That's the main thing."

St Helens man of the match Zeb Taia told BBC Sport:

"It was a tough game, one of the toughest this year. Credit to Hull, they turned up.

"They still want to compete for the title but credit to us, we stuck in and dug deep but we were lucky at the end.

"It was tough. Especially with the heat. I think we just panicked a bit when they had 11 players on the field."

St Helens have hung on to win.

They end Hull's dream of three consecutive Challenge Cup wins.

And that dream is ended by the last team to achieve that feat, Saints in 2008.

Saints forward Zeb Taia is named man of the match.

"We outpassed them in many departments," says Hull coach Lee Radford.

As to the three yellow cards, his tongue is visibly in his cheek as he says simply: "Great decisions!"

One minute left. One set left for Hull. But, after battling their way to the halfway line on the first tackle, they deliver a forward pass. Lunacy!

Game over.

Hull had the ball back on the halfway line but indiscipline costs them for the final time. Backchat gives away a penalty.

Hull need to be at the other end.

Three minutes left. They have the ball but not the field position.

This is breathless stuff now. After three comparatively uncompetitive quarter-finals, we have a real game on here.

Last 10 minutes. Four Saints tries shipped, three yellow cards handed out and yet more injuries. But incredibly Hull are still in this.

Saints go close again in the right corner, but their man advantage is about to end.

Matongo retuns. Will getting back to 13 be the final lift Hull need?

They have to score twice though!

Ben Barba missed the first meeting of these two sides in April. And the 17-try Super League top scorer has so far had a muted effect on this one.

At least he's still on the park though. Poor Hull hooker Danny Houghton is off for the day. One of the game's true tough guys is ruled out with concussion by the medics.

The resulting penalty from Matongo's moment of madness only just sneaks over but it counts two points just the same.

Saints seven points clear and with a man advantage again after Hull's third yellow card.

Masimbaashe Matongo takes out Jonny Lomax with a late shot. That did not look nice. Yellow card. And worse to follow for Hull as two points from a penalty will put Saints two scores clear again.

Kyle: Ben Barba rightly gets a lot of plaudits this season. That said, performances like today and other weeks shows they're far from a one-man team. They're a fantastic side.

Get 'em Onside!: That didn't look great for Houghton, although the fact he walked off was a relief. That's what RL is about though - the players, Saints and Hull FC, both came across to ensure he was ok.
