St Helens v Hull FC (15:30 BST)

The Macron Stadium, home of Bolton Wanderers, will be the next Challenge Cup destination for the winners this afternoon.

The 28-000-capacity Horwich-based stadium, home to Bolton since they left Burnden Park in 1997, has been chosen, in another ground-breaking venture by the RFL, to stage both semi-finals back to back on Sunday 5 August.

The two Cup semis will be the first rugby league staged at the ground since the second of St Helens' two World Club Challenge wins over Brisbane Broncos in 2007.

They also beat Brisbane there in 2001, as well as losing 38-0 there to Sydney Roosters in 2003.

The ground, then known as the Reebok Stadium, also staged three Great Britain internationals there - two against New Zealand, one against Australia, all of them home defeats.

  15. Saints out to right recent Cup recordpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 3 June 2018

St Helens v Hull FC (15:30 BST)

Who would have thought, when St Helens won the Challenge Cup for the third successive year in 2008, that they might go a whole decade without winning it again?

After comfortably beating Huddersfield 42-12 at Twickenham in 2006, they were then worthy winners again when the competition returned to the rebuilt Wembley in 2007, easily disposing of Catalans Dragons 30-8.

But, in the nine years since beating Hull 28-16 in 2008, the 12-times winners have not even made it to Wembley.

The last time they made the semi-finals was in 2015 when they lost 24-14 to Leeds at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington.

However, they do have, in Jon Wilkin and James Roby, two survivors of that last Wembley win, 10 years ago.

  16. Hull chasing cup treblepublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 3 June 2018

St Helens v Hull FC (15:30 BST)

Hull FC have only won the Challenge Cup five times in the competition's 122-year history.

But that statistic has been massively improved over the past two years, with successive narrow Wembley wins over Warrington (12-10, in 2016) and Wigan, who they beat 18-14 just 10 months ago.

Now they are looking for a third Challenge Cup in a row. And who were the last side to achieve that feat? Why, St Helens of course, from 2006 to 2008.

And who were the side Saints beat to complete that feat in 2008? Hull. It had to be. 28-16. So there's more at stake here than meets the eye.

  17. Hello and welcome to St Helenspublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 3 June 2018

St Helens v Hull FC (15:30 BST)

It's Challenge Cup quarter-final weekend. And attention turns to St Helens today as the Super League leaders play host to Cup holders Hull FC.

Catalans Dragons, Leeds and Warrington have already booked their places in the last four.

And, over the next two and a half hours or so, we will find out whether it's 12-times victors Saints or Hull, Wembley winners for the past two seasons, who join them.

Mark Percival's try sealed Saints' 26-12 win against Hull on 6 AprilImage source, Rex Features

Hull have already failed to win at the Totally Wicked Stadium once this season, when Saints won 26-12 there in early April, in Super League.

In fact, only one side have won there in 2018, reigning league champions Leeds, 28-20 back in March. And that flags up what a tall order this might be for the injury-hit Black and Whites.
