    Wigan 4-14 Roosters

Here we go then. Forty minutes of full-pelt, blood, sweat and tears, ripsnorting, riproaring thunderous rugby league football.

Wigan need to sharpen up, don't give the Roosters the opportunity to play. They might just have a chance then.

Ten points in it for the Chooks... they will have confidence they can add to their tally. One more could be a hammer blow.

    It's all set-up for a thrilling climax.

  6. 'Wigan need to tire Roosters out'published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2019

    HT: Wigan 4-14 Roosters

Wigan v Sydney RoostersImage source, PA

“I thought the Roosters were incredible to start with - they were clinical.

“Brett Morris' athletic prowess was the difference early on. Wigan hung on and dug deep and got back into it as they put the Roosters under some fatigue.

“Wigan need to execute with the ball more now, make the Roosters work, tire them out and expose that pre-season rustiness if they are to get back into it.”

    ...and breathe.

If your eyeballs are on stalks after that, I know how you feel. Draining and exhilarating in equal measure.

Right, while we take a break from this huge encounter, let's get you up to speed with a few more rugby league tales from today and the past week.

  8. Half-timepublished at 40 mins

Phew. What a first 40 that was?!

Furious pace, plenty of skills, absolute savagery in terms of hits (both legal and not so...) and a hat-trick - only the third in a World Club Challenge - by Brett Morris.

The Roosters started like a train, looked like they might just blow Wigan away as Morris chalked up two in quick succession...

...but Wigan showed their mettle with a well-worked try of their own through Tom Davies before Roosters responded.

However, just 10 points in it... it's still anyone's game. This has been top class.

    Wigan 4-14 Roosters

Some really sprightly running by the Roosters has Wigan on the rack, but Cooper Cronk threw a rare forward pass to the left.

Have to say, the past two attacks the visitors made, their halves Luke Keary and Cronk had acres of space...

Wigan rip in on the following set... almost a line break but Victor Radley made a huge legs tackle.

The last tackle play comes to an end, a dangerous kick goes to the in-goal but Daniel Tupou is tackled in the air and it's a penalty. Time almost up in the first-half.

    Wigan 4-14 Roosters

Brilliant defence from Wigan with Roosters right on the line stops them in their tracks.

Some great late off-loads kept that move alive on that right edge but the Warriors stopped them.

How much energy has that kind of 'D' taken out of them?

    Wigan 4-14 Roosters

Wigan look to pinch the ball at the ruck and it sees them back on the defensive.

Sydney Roosters can roar forward on the back of it...

Another teasing kick goes into the in-goal but as Joseph Manu goes up, the ball is dabbed behind.

Drop-out... Roosters will get it back.

  12. try

TRY: Wigan 4-14 Roosterspublished at 32 mins

    Brett Morris

Some sublime execution from Sydney Roosters on the back of the field position set up by Isaac Liu's rampage forward.

Jake Friend dished it out from the right of the sticks back to the 10... Cooper Cronk took it right to the line and out-the-back to his partner Luke Keary, who in turn engaged the defence before feeding Brett Morris who coasted to the line to score his hat-trick.

He follows Michael Jennings who got one as a centre against the Warriors in Sydney back in 2014.

    Roosters re-establish control.

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

Ten minutes to go to the break and a cheap penalty hands the possession back to the Roosters, who bang it to touch.

They are loading up another big attack...

  14. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

Roosters half-back Cooper Cronk sent up a massive kick to the left edge corner for Daniel Tupou and Brett Morris to take...

Tupou is like a spring normally in the air but went tumbling and Wigan's Tom Davies took it in ahead of Brett Morris, who tried to pinch it one-on-one but gave away the penalty.

    Wigan rumble forward...

  15. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

Wigan get the ball 10 out from their own line and for the first time in 10 minutes the Roosters are grinding them down in their own half.

End of the set sees Wigan boom it down field but the Roosters backline were all set on their own 20 waiting for it.

It might look pretty frenetic out there but both teams are still cool as ice.

  16. 'Deafening at the DW'published at 26 mins

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

    Jay Freeman
    BBC Sport at DW Stadium

"I've been fortunate as a sports fan and journalist to watch a lot of sporting events a lot of different places, so I can say with confidence that when Tom Davies crossed over for Wigan that's one of the most deafening cheers I've ever heard.

"This is just what Wigan needed and they took the game right to the Roosters and come out with points on the board.

"If they can register another try before this half is over, this is anyone's game. Fantastic atmosphere. Fantastic game."

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

The hits are unravelling now. This is no pre-season trial for the Roosters, they're feeling it and dishing it out equally. Wigan look energised.

It's being played at a sensational pace this, sparkling entertainment.

    Wigan 4-10 Roosters

Wigan's confidence is flowing now, they look so much sharper and tougher in attack. They went 60 metres off the kick-off.

Liam Farrell made a blockbusting break down the right, Zak Hardaker is coming into matters on both sides of the ruck.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh what a hit on Jared Waerea-Hargreaves from Joe Greenwood. They'll feel the tremors of that on Bondi beach...

  19. try

TRY: Wigan 4-10 Roosterspublished at 19 mins

    Tom Davies

And so the old adage as ever rings true.

Wigan got the field position, they had the repeat set, and they took full advantage.

Some more energy-sapping carries work the Roosters over, they go right, but can't find a way through...

Then it goes left, George Williams' delayed pass, Oliver Gildart with some sensational, succulent catch and pass to get Tom Davies in out wide.

He cruises to the line and the DW erupts. It's a huge score.

Zak Hardaker misses the kick and it is a six-point ball-game.

  20. 'It has been spiced up'published at 18 mins

    Wigan 0-10 Roosters

    Jon Wilkin
Ex-World Club Challenge winner with St Helens on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Rugby league is a contact sport, it's aggressive and look at what that Waerea-Hargreaves hit has done to the atmosphere now. It has spiced things up, it has livened it up.

"Some of the iconic moments in matches like this come from moments like that."
