    St Helens 0-0 Warrington

Excellent defending from Lachlan Coote - the St Helens full-back is alert to a low kick through and gets there ahead of Ben Currie to concede a goal-line dropout.

Warrington come again. It's their best spell of the game.

Spoke too soon! Jason Clark drops the ball in the tackle and coughs up possession.

Now then - a repeat ending of the previous Warrington set, but this time it results in a Mark Percival knock-on.

    Chance for the Wire.

    St Helens 0-0 Warrington

Warrington again test St Helens under the high ball, but Mark Percival is underneath it this time.

Approaching the 15-minute mark and still we await the first points of the final.

    St Helens 0-0 Warrington

Tommy Makinson is one of my favourite players around at the moment.

It's not just the acrobatic finishes - he's also absolutely rock solid defensively, as the St Helens and England man proves when he takes a high kick and races 30-odd metres to set Saints on the way forward once more.

I've just seen a replay of that early Morgan Knowles chance. It looks suspiciously like a try to me... is that the sort of break Warrington need if they're going to cause an upset?

Meanwhile Saints prop Alex Walmsley - who has recovered amazingly well after breaking his neck last year - spills the ball and gives Warrington a full set at about halfway.

It might not be a capacity crowd again for this wonderful old showpiece occasion. In fact, it’s clearly a long way short of it.

    But it’s a cracking atmosphere.

At kick-off time, for those trying to embellish the action by adding in the luxury of listening to Dave Woods’ commentary on their headphones, the crowd noise from both ends was so loud you couldn’t hear him speak!

    Let's get it on...

Brilliant build-up and now it's show time. It's a quirky start from Warrington, they'll have to do things a little bit different today.

I don't think Brian is talking about the same thing that Marvin Gaye was, by the way.

    St Helens 0-0 Warrington

After a solid Warrington set, St Helens respond by going close to the opening score.

Tommy Makinson finds space on the right touchline and makes a break, then Morgan Knowles can't quite ground a low kick on the last.

At least that's what the referee thinks - might have been worth another look, that...

    St Helens 0-0 Warrington

What a confident start from Stefan Ratchford. St Helens kick on the last tackle of their opening set, and the Warrington full-back leaps highest to clutch the high ball under real pressure.

    A settler for the Wire.

Warrington's Stefan Ratchford places the ball on the tee - and we're off!

The national anthem is complete, the pyrotechnics have been blasted for one final time, and the players are ready.

A little behind schedule, we're close to getting under way at Wembley.

Warrington coach Steve Price told BBC One:

"We've got a number of players who have played for the country and on the big stage a number of times.

"We are going to need all of that today and more.

"They're a quality team in St Helens and all the pressure is on them and nothing on us.

"We planned for (being without Blake Austin) all week. The team I’m putting out there today, I’ve got the utmost confidence in."

St Helens coach Justin Holbrook on Warrington naming Ben Currie in one of their half-back positions:

"That’s what we thought they’d do. We’ve prepared for that."

But is it a double bluff from the Wolves? We'll soon find out.

They're shaking hands with all of the players and the mascots, for whom this must be an absolutely unforgettable experience.

And now, as is traditional, the hymn "Abide With Me" is sung at Wembley. Always a special moment before any cup final.

The two teams are lined up in the tunnel and preparing to make their entrance.

St Helens winger Tommy Makinson told BBC One:

"We're really excited, it's been a long time since we've been here.

"We've got a good back three and we work hard for each other, but Warrington are a quality side. We have got to work hard against them and hopefully come out on top."

The BBC weather app says it’s 29 degrees, and it’s stifling in the press box.

Almost uncomfortable, in fact, after a pre-match spread of beef bourguignon and apple strudel - both good old fashioned favourites of rugby league watchers everywhere, I assume?

Heaven knows what it must be like down at pitchside. Hotter still, and about to get even hotter!

There's going to be a lot of taking on extra fluids for the next two hours. In fact, who handles these conditions the best may be a key factor.

  20. Hughes relives pain of ruptured testiclepublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 24 August 2019

St Helens v Warrington (15:00 BST)

Jack Hughes has recovered from a ruptured testicle in time to play in today's Wembley final.

The Warrington forward spoke to BBC Sport earlier this week about the injury he sustained three weeks ago against Catalans, and how his failure to speak French caused a few issues in hospital.
