WCC: St Helens 6-12 Sydney Roosters

Theo Fages wafts into the Roosters line and double-pumps before releasing Luke Thompson, and the front-rower is so close to creeping his way in.

Jack Welsby pushes a pass that's not on and Roosters survive.

Meanwhile, Nat Butcher is being assessed relating to a possible knee injury. The Roosters won't fancy losing him in preseason.

I can only reiterate just how physical this game has been.

There should be a setting where each post makes your phone vibrate, or laptop screen wobble.

It's 100 mph thump and bump.

St Helens go for the killer play and Tommy Makinson you'd back to finish it... but he drops Jonny Lomax's looping pass to the wing.

It was a golden chance. Makinson will feel frustration there.

Saints get another opportunity from a scrum after Sitili Tupouniua drops it.

Lindsay Collins yomps forward and is smashed, full whack by Matty Lees.

The Roosters man reverberates before rediscovering his direction, while Lees staggers about.

Physio sprints on, checks him. Lees has to go off for a head injury assessment.

Angus Crichton still off for his. It's been a real battle.

Joseph Manu caught it at full speed and he got so much momentum it carried him over the line.

It came from a penalty conceded by Luke Thompson and penalties in the modern game usually mean tries. That's a huge try in the context of this game.

TRY: St Helens 6-12 Sydney Roosterspublished at 60 mins

    Joseph Manu

    How telling is that?

Saints gave away a penalty and the Roosters purred into life.

The ball was worked into position, some slick football eased the ball over to the right edge and with the left-edge defence scrambling across, Joseph Manu spliced himself between two and stretched out to the score.

Again, Kyle Flanagan pushes the kick wide.

    Still in the balance.

Saints continued to drill into the Roosters defence, Matty Lees going close at he forced his frame against their line.

The ball went right, and this time it's Tommy Makinson who finds himself being escorted over the touchline.

Tommy Makinson takes to the air to bat a kick back into play and back-row Sitili Tupouniua is shepherded out!

    Saints scrum 10 away...

WCC: St Helens 6-8 Sydney Roosters

Sydney Roosters swept around to the left and almost a perfect play as Luke Keary pushes a pass to Nat Butcher which he couldn't take.

On the back of that, a highly-charged Roosters get pinged by referee Chris Kendall, and Saints march them back toward their own line.

Luke Keary has taken Joseph Paulo high... there's a Rooster down. Think it might be Angus Crichton.

Anything that's going through Jonny Lomax looks threatening for Saints.

Every time he's on the ball he and Zeb Taia are combining well and they look dangerous.

Do you know what Saints have missed? Mark Percival. He would have made a world of difference for Saints with his execution.

Again good hands from the Saints, but the final ball out wide again goes begging.

It's the sledgehammer runs of Zeb Taia, coupled with his excellent off-load game which is giving the NRL premiers the biggest headaches.

However, on the back of that. Sloppy ruck penalty from Joseph Paulo hands the Chooks a bit of relief.

This time it's Luke Keary who has to kick from inside his own half, Saints turning up the heat at the ruck.

The smothering defence from the Roosters is effective but sapping.

Saints can maybe hit them on the edges... they've having a go. 10 away...

Jake Friend is the skipper tonight in the absence of Boyd Cordner and he's taken the responsibility very seriously.

He's an absolute chatterbox, not of all it complimentary. He's chirping at his defence, chirping at the referee, chirping at anyone in earshot.

Friend is a really key part of the Roosters side, and unlucky not to have received representative honours.

Saints put a kick in which Joseph Paulo had knocked out by Roosters centre Angus Crichton, and the ball came to Tommy Makinson who dives for the line!

He's short though. No try. Saints scrum, Roosters 10...

Jack Welsby throws the ball wide. Into touch.

Saints got a penalty for obstruction and you didn't need to be a lipreader to appreciate the sentiment of Roosters' coach Trent Robinson as he rose to his feet furiously.

On the back of it though... Saints are surging!

Saints banging on the door. Alex Walmsley held out in the middle, looping ball to Tommy Makinson but he's stalled.

Ball goes to the left instead, Zeb Taia, a back-row, dinks a kick into the in-goal and it looks like James Tedesco has dabbed it dead...

He hasn't - it's Matty Costello who got the final touch and the Roosters get a 20-tap.

Very, very good play from Saints, who worm their way into the 20.

Theo Fages clips a kick which comes down right under the crossbar, and Joseph Manu, who mopped up, is taken behind the line.

Drop out for Saints to come and again they're into the red zone.

St Helens have not allowed James Tedesco a lot of room for manoeuvre. The kick-chase has been very sharp.

Both sides chopping out sets at pace for the first part. Waiting for one another to crack, and take advantage.

The direct approach for Saints is what's worked for them.

A little bit of subtle ball movement from Morgan Knowles could test this Roosters pack out.

For the Roosters, I expect to see the same intensity. They bring a real intensity to how they defend and makes them very difficult to break down.
