"I am sure they will challenge Australia and New Zealand," he added.

The new St Helens assistant was very impressed with not only what he saw from his opponents, but his own side too.

"We learn a few things tonight and go and play Samoa with good confidence."

France head coach Laurent Frayssinous, speaking to BBC Two:

"The first 30 minutes was tough for us. England put massive pressure on us but we managed to get back into the game, which we can be proud of because England are a great team.

"A few key moments in the second half killed us, like the intercept, but apart from that I'm proud of the boys. We challenged a great England team in a few areas, which we wanted to do.

"We're not at their level yet and hopefully we will be."

This World Cup is all about incremental gains for France, who are hosting the next World Cup in 2025.

Barring an unlikely Greece win over Samoa tomorrow, it'll be a straight shootout between France and Samoa for the other quarter-final spot from Group A.

England coach Shaun Wane, speaking to BBC Two:

"I knew they could do better, we have to do better and some of the things weren't good enough. Even now, I feel the same. We did some good things but not consistent enough.

"It's a win, it's a Test match, but without a shadow of a doubt we will improve on that.

"We've got a good 24 and we need to keep that competition. I don't want my team selection to be easy, I want a conversation to be had. I've got a great staff who work so hard to prepare these players.

"When I pick the team against Greece, I want there to be 24 players fighting for a spot."

England half-back and player of the match George Williams, speaking to BBC Two:

"Credit to France. We started really well, they came back fighting and put us in a tough spot for a long period.

"We got a bit of a roasting at half-time but we finished strongly so it was pretty pleasing.

"We were far from perfect but we won, that's the most important thing.

"We're on a journey, we're trying to get better week by week. We'll prepare for Greece and hopefully put a better performance on than we did tonight."

On his own form: "It's been a tough year but to go into an England camp with so many good players, they make my job pretty easy and I'm really enjoying it."

They were very good. Just that momentary lapse is the thing for England. Against Australia or New Zealand would that 10 minutes be crucial?

But it's been a very good win.
