England head coach Shaun Wane, speaking to BBC One:

"We've been through all the footage, this is a test match and we have been training effectively.

"I need to have a look at everybody. We have a big game next week and this will be an easy pick. Whoever makes our best team.

"This will be a chance to look at players.

"We hope we can put on a good performance."

Australian Belinda Sharpe has been appointed as referee for today's match at Bramall Lane.

She will become the second female to control a men's Rugby League World Cup game, following Kasey Badger, who took charge of the match between Wales and Tonga on Monday.

Playing debutants and a staggered back line is not going to do England any favours next week.

I think Shaun Wane should have gone with his strongest 17 and work on those combinations. I can't see anyone having a performance today that will earnt them a shirt for next week.

England will be looking to complete a job well done by beating Greece and topping Group A in their home World Cup.

It's a day of firsts in Sheffield, with the two sides have never met in international competition before, while rugby league makes its debut at Bramall Lane.

A results for the Greeks would be a sensational sporting shock, considering their national federation was only recognised by the government in August.

  6. 'The Greeks are starting to love rugby league'published at 14:11 British Summer Time 29 October 2022

    England v Greece (14:30 BST)

Greece captain Jordan Meads hopes his side's involvement in their maiden world cup will be a "springboard for the sport" in the nation.

The national team were banned from playing in Greece for several years until government recognition of the Greek Rugby League Federation in August.

"The Greeks are really starting to love their rugby league," said Meads.

"Having the national team in the World Cup, we knew they'd get behind us and the amount of messages and support we've received over the last month or so has been absolutely mind-boggling.

"The World Cup is the greatest microphone you can have, so we're really hoping to use this tournament to springboard the sport in our country."

Before the tournament started, I had the pleasure of speaking to Greece coach Steve Georgallis and captain Jordan Meads about the - let's say unusual - path that the Greeks had taken to reach their first World Cup.

The national team were banned from playing on home soil for several years, up until August when Greece's government formally recognised the Greek Rugby League Federation as the sport's governing body in the country.

Before that, they played some qualifiers in secret to avoid police detection and others on neutral venues.

    England v Greece (14:30 BST)

George Williams has been named England captain with Sam Tomkins rested, while Victor Radley, who qualifies to play for England through his Sheffield-born father, is also included.

"It is personal for me, and special," said Radley whose father and brother will be watching from the stands today.

"It's something I'm really looking forward to. When I chose to play for England, I looked forward to this Sheffield game and playing in front of my old man.

"Now it's here, it's a big occasion for the family but I'm going out to do my part for the team. I'm sure after the game I'll see everyone and have about 20 pints."

England had an outstanding performance against Samoa and took momentum into the France game but about 25 minutes into that it juddered to a halt.

They had a drop in concentration but I expect to see 80 minutes of concentration and intensity this week and people pushing for places for the knockout stages of the competition.

During the week, boss Shaun Wane brought former England international Stuart Pearce into the camp as he looks to take knowledge on from different sporting people.

“He’s been talking to us. He’s an impressive Englishman," said Wane. "He’s very passionate and he’s presented to the group really well. I think he got a lot from us as well. He spoke very highly about the experience.

"It’s really important to get other people in. We’ve had some important chats with Stuart. He’s a very humble man.

“He’s very down to earth and one of the best speakers I’ve come across, no question. And he’s got a lot from us. He spoke very highly about our camp and how we went about our session compared to what he’s used to.”

There's a fairly relaxed atmosphere around both camps before today's game.

England may already have a quarter-final spot secured, but make no mistake - they'll want to send out a message to the other World Cup contenders with a handsome win.

England should dominate and I expect them to. They have to maintain standards in defence and not do things today that they wouldn't do against Tonga, New Zealand or Australia.

    Group A

England are through to the quarter-finals and will advance as Group A winners if they avoid defeat by Greece in their final match on Saturday.

Greece, competing in their first World Cup, have already been eliminated.

It will be a winner-takes-all contest when Samoa and France play each other on Sunday.
