It's a big learning day for a couple of guys. Jack Welsby will learn a lot today, Victor Radley made a telling contribution for the Stephen Crichton try. Dom Young, who we've spoken about in such glowing terms.

But when you make those errors you learn. These are young athletes who will be infinitely better because of this.

The young guys let themselves down because they set such a high standard. But they will keep growing and come back.

England captain Sam Tomkins, speaking to BBC One:

"We were the second best team. Plenty of effort but effort alone isn't good enough.

"The amount of pressure we put ourselves under, in attack there were sloppy errors. We didn't defend how we had defended in previous weeks.

"We didn't sell ourselves. We thought we were building something.

"In the first-half they struck us with two tries I didn't think they deserved. But they're a good side, give them an opportunity and they will score.

    "We gave them that much."

    FT: England 26-27 Samoa

Samoa captain Junior Paulo, speaking to BBC Sport:

"It's quite an emotional one. We always knew we had the belief in the team. We knew if we turned up and played our best footy, we knew what we could achieve.

"I've got to give credit to England. As a fan they were the most entertaining. It went right down to the wire, it was always going to be tough coming up against such a great team. Hats off to England.

"There is a lot of people who are praying for us all around the world. This one is for them. I believe we have been playing through their prayers and blessings over the last couple of weeks. We owe it to the people of Samoa.

"We have to enjoy the win tonight and then we have another week just to prep. There's only one week to go. It's all about the journey, and the journey continues."

Mark Brierley: I can't speak. What a finished to that game.

James Lawton: Stop the loop fixtures. Bring in an origin type fixture. We need more big-game experience for the players

Horatius: Australia could have brought 3 teams over from the NRL and won the World Cup. That’s the difference in standards between Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere Rugby League.

England coach Shaun Wane, speaking to BBC One: "We were not good enough, the best team won. I'm gutted, absolutely wounded.

"I was never happy in that game, we were below our standards. There is some soul searching going on from us staff. The players have been great, I don't doubt their effort.

"Samoa were the best team today. We didn't do the right things at the right time and I blame myself.

"We have to be better, this is not good enough. I blame me. We have to be better, semi-final is not good enough. I am wounded."

David Fletcher: Amazing match. England must really rue the dropped ball when over the line.

Mark Burt: Samoa were immense but England have only themselves to blame. Only turned up for 20 mins, countless unforced errors and terrible decision making. You get what you deserve and England deserved nothing! They’ll know that they bottled it today.

Neil McGuire: Great semi final and as much as we wanted England to win. Samoa edged it and deserved it

It's gonna move mountains. Getting the big name players to represent their country of heritage, this is why. What it's going to do for rugby league, it's massive.

It's about pride in the country and pride in the flag, it's a massive moment.

Samoa player of the match Jarome Luai:

"I don't think anyone gave us a chance tonight but the belief we have is very strong. I don't know what to say.

"We feel the energy of your support, we need it for one more game.

"Our scramble, our belief. Not many calls went our way but our brotherhood really showed. It's never been done before, I love this group of boys.

"The loss was a blessing in disguise but we put our heads down and we worked hard. I'm really grateful.

"We have to enjoy this moment and see what we can do next week."
