St Helens have done what no club has managed to do in the Super League era, which is win in Australia in the World Club Challenge.

The side built by Justin Holbrook, Kristian Woolf and now taken on by former assistant Paul Wellens has conquered one of the great club sides in NRL history in the Penrith Panthers, on their home turf.

Their defence of the Super League, which they have won four years in a row, begins next weekend.

But for now, it's history to be savoured for the Saints.

We hope you've enjoyed it. Until next time, goodbye.

St Helens matchwinner Lewis Dodd told ABC and BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra:

"They are the moments you dream of. I'm made up for the boys and the fans who have travelled all this way.

"The belief in the camp has always been there. We know how good we are and that's all that matters. We came here to prove a point, win, lose or draw, to show how good we are and I think we did that.

"Penrith showed their class because at 12-0 down a lot of clubs would have crumbled, but Penrith are a really good side.

"You practice golden-point in training, it's muscle memory and you do that for moments like that."

St Helens' Curtis Sironen told ABC and BBC 5 Live Sports Extra:

"We knew it was going to be a massive step up in class for us but we're the sort of club that it doesn't matter who we play - we turn up and play our own style.

"The Australian rugby league world will see what St Helens is all about now.

"It was unreal, we are World Club champions."

Penrith have been a benchmark for NRL football in recent times, and even without Api Koroisau and Viliame Kikau - who have both moved on - were full quality.

This was no B-squad. Isaah Yeo, Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai et al.

They showed their class too, making this a real contest.

What a bruising battle between two excellent teams.

It felt cruel that Saints were possibly to be denied victory after a late try which came from a Jack Welsby error.

Welsby was outstanding in this game, notably in an imperious first-half.

He and his Saints teammate are now basking in the glow of this success. It's an emotional occasion.

No one really gave them a chance to come here against the Panthers. They came here, they had a point to prove and they were the better team for 80 minutes tonight.

You knew it was going to come down to one little mistake, and St Helens took their chance when they got it. What a win.

    FT: Penrith 12-13 St Helens

St Helens become the first team since Wigan in 1994 to win in Australia, and they had to hold out for golden point to do it.

Lewis Dodd slotted the drop-goal after first-half tries from Jack Welsby and Konrad Hurrell had been overhauled by Izack Tago and Brian To'o.

It was a defensive display of real majesty, and they showed in the first half they have the class to undo even the NRL's best as well in attack.

St Helens have been the better team for the whole 80 minutes but Penrith just seem to do it game after game.

When they're at home they come up with the right play to get back into the game or win.

It's going to come down to who gets the right field position or who comes up with the wrong mistake in extra-time.
