Phew, what a day! England's women and men both beat France 64-0 in today's double-header in Warrington, with the women running in 12 tries and the men 11 - Harry Smith's accurate goal-kicking made up the difference.

Both coaches said these mid-season internationals would kick off their campaign for glory at the 2025 World Cup in France. Let's see if they can maintain that momentum.

For now, it's back to club duties, but England's men have a three-Test series at home to Tonga at the end of the season while an announcement is due on games for the women later this year.

Thanks for joining us, enjoy the rest of your Bank Holiday weekend!!

    FT: England 64-0 France

England second-row forward Kai Pearce-Paul, speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s always good coming away with a zero. We pride ourselves on our defence. Waney emphasised that, saying we have to front load our D [defence], and that showed today.”

  3. It's a very proud day - Wanepublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    FT: England 64-0 France

Speaking to Sky Sports, England coach Shaun Wane said: "Half-time we had to improve on a few things, we had to fix a few details, and those details we saw in the second half, which I'm really happy about.

"We had 13 debuts so it's a very proud day. I've been genuinely excited about this game but I'm not going to get carried away. The French were big but not as skilful as us. I thought we did a lot of good things.

"I expected George Williams to be good, he is one of our best players, but I probably would have given man of the match to Matty Ashton. Harry Smith controlled his side as well as he could and his kicking was really good too.

"It's going to be an impressive review tomorrow and I'm really happy for the players."

  4. 'They're both kids but they're very vocal'published at 18:37 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    FT: England 64-0 France

More from England captain George Williams, speaking to Sky Sports about his understanding with Harry Smith and Jack Welsby: “It’s really good working with Harry and Jack. They’re both young kids, but they’re both very vocal. They’re really experienced for how old they are.

“It’s a pleasing result, and I’m made up for the debutants. It’s a day they won’t forget.

“It’s been brilliant in the camp. I’ve felt really old. I’m 28 and the youngest is 19 in Matty Nicholson. There’s a massive spread in age groups. But you put your club loyalties to one side, you come in, and you’re England. Waney’s been really good in making it family England. It’s been a great week.”

  5. 'We had some young kids in today and they did a great job'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    FT: England 64-0 France

England captain George Williams, speaking to Sky Sports: “My dad will be proud. He lives in Australia, so he’ll have stayed up late to watch this. I’m sure he’s proud like the rest of the family. We’re made up that we got over the line, we had some young kids in today and they did a great job. It’s been a really enjoyable week.

“I enjoyed myself out there. I think our young forwards laid the platform. Me, Harry [Smith] and Jack [Welsby] were able to play our stuff out of the back of it. It was really pleasing. But probably the best thing is the zero on France. They didn’t score a point, so that’s the England standards, and Waney will be happy with the zero."

That 11th try wraps things up for England, with George Williams finishing with three of them, plus one goal... and I've lost count of how many assists!!

Leeds winger Ash Handley, 27, also scored a hat-trick of tries on his England debut, but Warrington scrum-half Williams, 28, is named player of the match in his first game as England captain, at his home ground.

  12. 'We want to put an 80-minute performance in'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    England 58-0 France

Andy Last, England assistant coach, speaking to Sky Sports: “We’re really happy with what we’ve done in the first 40 minutes but there are definite areas that we need to improve. Shaun Wane spoke at half-time about needing a little bit more intensity. We want a little bit more inside pressure and we want to tidy up one of the two kicks we’ve selected and nail our execution of kicks, but overall, we’re really happy with the first 40.

"We’ve got a well-balanced team, young, enthusiastic, and very, very skilful, and the speed we’ve played at has caused France some problems. Ash Handley has been excellent on that right edge along with Matty Ashton on that left edge. We need to continue it, and that’s the challenge for us. It’s 80 minutes, Test match football, and we’re looking to put an 80-minute performance in.”
