I'm sure the Wigan celebrations will go on long into the night after that performance.

The Warriors added the Super League title to their League Leaders' Shield and you can't argue that they didn't deserve it.

After a real arm-wrestle in the first half, Matt Peet's men showed their class with a dominant second-half showing.

It wasn't to be for Catalans Dragons and Sam Tomkins but they'll regroup for next season - and I'm sure St Helens will be itching to get back out there in 2024.

That's it for our coverage of tonight's Grand Final. Thanks for joining us for a great evening of rugby league.

  2. Two more Grand Finals to comepublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

After an engrossing evening at Old Trafford, there are still two more Grand Final to be played this weekend.

At 14:30 BST tomorrow, Toulouse Olympique play London Broncos for a place in Super League next season.

That Championship clash takes on greater significance as the composition of the top flight in 2025 and beyond is yet to be decided.

Even if the winners of that side finish bottom of Super League next season, relegation is not necessarily a certainty.

Later on Sunday Leeds Rhinos take on Wigan Warriors in the Wheelchair Super League Grand Final.

  3. 'We showed how good we are'published at 20:31 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    FT: Wigan 10-2 Catalans

"It was an unbelievable experience," Wigan scrum-half Harry Smith told Sky Sports.

"What a game, we ground it out. I am lost for words... it was unbelievable.

"It's the confidence we have in each other and the trust to back our ability - it's helped us out over the last couple of months, we've been playing really well and it showed today.

"We needed to get Sam (Tomkins) isolated on his own and take away their big two wingers, It was my job, it's my craft and I've got to nail it for the team and I think I did that."

  4. 'Wigan dug deep'published at 20:28 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    FT: Wigan 10-2 Catalans

Wigan's Harry Sunderland Trophy winner Jake Wardle told Sky Sports:

"This [Harry Sunderland Trophy] could have gone to any one of the boys out there. It was a team effort, I'm just really proud. It's a proud moment.

"Catalans are a really big side, so we needed to hang in there for the first 40 minutes, and in the second half it was about moving the ball and getting their big players moving.

"We are a group of mates who will do anything for each other. There were times that it got a bit scrappy, but the boys dug deep."

  5. Peet proud of 'special' Wiganpublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    FT: Wigan 10-2 Catalans

Triumphant Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet told Sky Sports: "It feels good, it has been a long time coming.

"We are building, we have a special group of players - a special club from top to bottom. I'm so proud of everyone."

On speaking to Shaun Wane, a previous Super League-winning coach at Wigan, after the triumph: "He said very good. We talk all the time about this feeling. I've been very jealous of him for a long time because he savoured it.

"We have similar philosophies and I'm made up that I can share this with him and Rads (CEO Kris Radlinski) in particular, they have put so much trust in me and I'll continue to try pay them back."

There was to be no fairytale ending for Catalans full-back Sam Tomkins, who retires following defeat against his former club.

He's been reflecting as the curtain comes down on his career.

"Wigan were much the better team," the 34-year-old told Sky Sports.

"Obviously discipline cost us at certain times and we gave them too much opportunity. I felt like we ran out of gas in the last 20 minutes. We were chasing the game and had no legs left.

"I've lived the dream and I am sad today but hopefully I can look back over the 15 years and be happy. I have had some low points, and they don't get any lower than this, but I have had a lot more highs.

"I am retiring from something I have done from five years old.

"This game has given me and my family everything we have got. It's made me the person I am.

"I am finishing a very happy man. Although it's a low point I am sure at some point I'll be able to look back and smile."

  8. 'We'll bounce back'published at 20:18 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    FT: Wigan 10-2 Catalans

Catalans winger Tom Johnstone says his side can bounce back from the disappointment of another Grand Final defeat.

"Catalans have been doing it for the last four years, we've been building every year," the 28-year-old England international told Sky Sports.

"We have fallen just short again but I fully expect us to bounce back and go again next year."

With Sam Tomkins and Mitchell Pearce retiring - and centre Adam Keighran among those leaving the Dragons - the Perpignan side will need a bit of a rebuild.

    John Kear
Wales coach on BBC Radio 5 live

    Wigan were absolutely magnificent.

The first half we had a top quality, outstanding game of rugby league that was nip and tuck throughout.

The second half, Wigan made a couple of tactical adjustments.

They have done it to perfection and they have come away 8-0 in the second half and are fully-deserved winners.

Last man up is Wigan captain Liam Farrell.

The fireworks pop off at Old Trafford, the pyros go as well and the streamers are out on top of the squad.

Wigan are deserving Super League champions for 2023.

    FT: Wigan 10-2 Catalans

Disappointed Steve McNamara, Catalans coach, told Sky Sports: "We got half the game right - we got the defence right... one try conceded in a Grand Final.

"I'm very proud of the lads all season but it's disappointing tonight.

"I could not ask for more, I have no regrets, the team won't have any regrets. We just didn't play well enough tonight."

A second Grand Final defeat in the space of three years will sting for Les Dracs.

St Helens' four-year dominance of Super League has been brought to an end by their great rivals.

Head coach Matt Peet has had a stunning two years in charge of Wigan.

After a Challenge Cup title last year, it's the League Leaders' Shield and a Grand Final victory in 2023.

Chairman and co-owner Ian Lenagan goes out with another domestic title too.

The on-field presentation is under way, with Jake Wardle picking up his Harry Sunderland Trophy before the match officials get some recognition.

Wigan were fantastic in the second half. It was a real battle in the first half.

They came out and started really quick in the second half and put Catalans under a lot of pressure. What you have got to credit Wigan with is the defence.

I can't remember any clear cut opportunity for Catalans to score a try. Wigan defensively made it really hard for them to create any sort of opportunities.

They scored a fantastic try but for me it was all about Wigan's defence today. Credit to them.

Wigan came out all guns blazing in the second half and set their stall out.

Catalans I think it took a toll on their defence there, having to defend with 12 men for 20 minutes.

That played a part in the try. If Tom Davies was on the field I don't think Wigan would have scored. Ill discipline has cost them there.

Wigan celebrate but there are a few long faces in the white shirts of Catalans Dragons.

The French side lose a second Grand Final, two years after their defeat by St Helens at Old Trafford.

Wigan moved up a level in the second half, and their defence proved impregnable.

The sin-binning of Dragons winger Tom Davies played a part too.

There is no dream ending for Catalans full-back Sam Tomkins in the final game of his career. He ends up beaten by his former club.
