Toulon have a galaxy of stars from around the global game. Locks Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw are two of only three men (the other is ex-Leinster and New Zealand lock Brad Thorn) who have won the World Cup, Super Rugby and Heineken Cup titles.

But their South Africa team-mate, winger Bryan Habana, is bidding to join them, and in addition to Jonny Wilkinson, former Australia star Matt Giteau and massive France centre Mathieu Bastareaud are also in their star-studded backline.

Add in the in-form former England internationals Delon and Steffon Armitage, and you can see why they're the defending champions.

The players are out on the pitch warming up at the moment, with the 6ft 8in figure of Toulon's South Africa lock Bakkies Botha casting a menacing shadow.

Jonny Wilkinson is calling the shots as they go through a practice drill - not long now...

Jonny Wilkinson might be a big deal in England, but he's pretty hot stuff over the Channel as well.

Paris St-Germain are on the brink of signing Chelsea defender David Luiz in a deal worth about £40m, but Saturday's edition of French daily sports newspaper L'Equipe, external goes with a picture of Jonny under the headline "At All Costs".

Former Toulon lock on what his old club need to do to beat Saracens

"They need to negate the Saracens line speed. They need to play a power game, play through them, use their big, physical runners, be very direct."

Former England, Bath and Saracens prop David Flatman: "Saracens have got to stop Toulon's massive forwards from coming round the corner and making ground.

"They have got to stop Mathieu Bastareaud in midfield and they have got to be really disciplined and really communicate because you know what happens when you give penalties away against Wilko, he'll sink you."

Toulon are attempting to follow in the footsteps of Leicester and Leinster and become only the third side to retain the title, while Saracens are bidding to win the trophy for the first time and become the fifth English team to be champions of Europe.

Personally I don't know what it's like to win a Heineken Cup, but fortunately I know a man who does...

Jeremy Guscott was part of the Bath side that became the first champions from England - let him talk you through the only pass he made in his entire career that he remembers in slow motion, outline what it takes to get home in these sort of matches and predict who he thinks will win the final.

The Heineken Cup winners have been shared equally between England, France and Ireland, with each country supplying the champions on six occasions so far.

French giants Toulouse led the way with four titles, while Irish province Leinster have won a hat-trick of trophies.

Leicester, Munster and Wasps have all won the trophy twice, with Brive, Northampton, Ulster Bath and Toulon having won the title once apiece.

Since Toulouse beat Cardiff at Cardiff Arms back in front of only 21,800 fans in the first final in 1995, the Heineken Cup has grown into a juggernaut.

In that first year, when the game had just gone professional, the total attendance for the tournament was fewer than 100,000 fans.

These days the tournament attracts over a million people through the turnstyles each year, and about 70,000 of them will be in attendance at the Millennium Stadium this afternoon.

Right then, before we get into the nitty gritty of this final, let's say a proper farewell to the Heineken Cup itself.

After a tortuous saga involving more intra-European squabbles than a late-night session in Brussels, peace was finally declared when it was agreed to scrap the tournament after 19 years and introduce the European Rugby Champions Cup in its place from next season.

Standing between Toulon and back-to-back titles are Saracens, 'Wolf Pack' defence, external and all.

From playing in a public park 20 years ago to being one step from the summit of the European game, the north Londoners have done it their own way.

Fans of developing the man as much as the player, they favour old-fashioned bonding sessions over extra training and were also the first Premiership team to play on a plastic pitch.

    Toulon fans

It's May. It's a Bank Holiday weekend. So it must be raining in Cardiff, right? But even the damp weather cannot wipe the smiles off the faces of these Toulon fans in the Welsh capital.

The Heineken Cup final is the most economically lucrative single day major event Wales has hosted, says the Welsh government. Research following European rugby's 2011 final showed 83,000 fans attended the Millennium Stadium clash, boosting the local economy by £24m. About 70,000 fans are expected for Toulon against Saracens. Cardiff is hosting the event for a record seventh time.

Statler and Waldorf: Tricky for a neutral but on balance I'd like to see Saracens win - for Steve Borthwick in particular. He's a decent man who was treated badly by England.

Richard Hobart: Toulon will win because they have two important Englishmen playing for them - and I don't include Jonny Wilkinson. The Armitage brothers will make a difference, with Steffon being the match winner.

AM180: Saracens are better than last year. But will that be enough to close the gap?
