France on the front foot here, too. Morgan Parra with a kick over the Romanian defence and Gael Fickou is blocked from getting anywhere near the tryline by Ionut Botezatu. Nothing illegal about that, apparently, so on we go.

It's so quiet inside the Olympic Stadium that you can hear hooker Otar Turashvili bellow the line calls to his team-mates. Supporters of both teams needing invention or trickery to spark them into a rousing chorus.

Lynn Howells, the former Pontypridd and Cardiff coach, sits back in his chair, muttering something or other, frustrated at watching his team give up possession.

France, in the Romanian half, edging closer to their 22... But Gael Fickou, drifting across field, is knocked down, he had no-one in support, and the ball slips out of his grasp and onto the turn. Danger averted for The Oaks.

  4. France 17-6 Romaniapublished at 43 min

Romania wanting to go through the phases... the crowd's groan says it all, however, as Johann Van Heerden drops the ball while looking to avoid a collision. The lock slaps the turf. He knows his team were building momentum.

  5. France 17-6 Romaniapublished at 42 min

Romania have won a put-in at the scrum, about 35m from the France tryline, and we know what happened in the scrum early on in the first half. The men in blue attempting to turn the scrum, but a wobbling Romania pack get the ball back and The Oaks go hunting for the French 22.

France coach Philippe Saint-Andre has gone all Basil Fawlty in the changing room, he's standing up and gesticulating wildly to his players. The Frenchman not satisfied with the 11-point half-time lead.

Gael Fickou gang-tackled by Paula Kinikinilau and Florin Vlaicu and the French centre's refusal to surrender possession on the floor gives Vlaicu another chance to aim at the posts.

The Romania centre kicking with a sniper's calm. Three more points to the Oaks and Paulica Ion is back on the pitch, too!

There's about five minutes until half-time and the score has leaped from 3-3 to 17-3 in a blink of an eye. The sin-binning of Paulica Ion costly for the Oakes. Romania still willing to dare where other teams might call for caution, but France's defence is refusing to fold.

The side-stepping Brice Dulin was the architect, joining the attack from full-back. The French build momentum... a delightful floating pass from Morgan Parra to Alexandre Flanquart, who releases  Yannick Nyanga on the right wing. Parra with another superb touchline conversion.

He's wearing pink boots, but that's OK because he has the speed of a panther and the strength of a bear. Sofiane Guitoune superbly dives over near the right touchline, keeping his feet in play and grounding the ball with one hand despite Catalin Fercu on his back.

Morgan Parra's conversion swishes and sways but in between the uprights it sails.

The only way Romania can stop a French maul from a line-out 5m from the Romanian line is to do so illegally. The referee spots it and tight-head Paulica Ion must leave the field for 10 minutes.

Ben James: Romanian forwards are pumped up! Backs are letting them down though

Andrew Priestley: It has been great to see the so called 'lesser' nations giving the big boys a run for their money. Romania are competing very well

Sweat dripping down the noses of the Romanian front-row, they've already put a shift in, but gravity pulls them down and the Romanians have lost the put-in and France can now sniff a chance to attack...

Florin Vlaicu opts for power rather than accuracy and the crowd grumble and groan as they watch his effort balloon wide. It wasn't an easy chance - about 35m out -  but the Halfpennys and Carters of this world would've nailed it with ease.

There's being optimistic and there's thinking fish will learn to climb trees. Danut Dumbrava  going for an ambitious drop-goal from the halfway line, but it isn't a wasted opportunity as Romania have won a penalty. Five turnovers won by the men in yellow so far in this match. France? Zero. None.

The committed Romanians are competing very well with their French opponents. Don't believe me? Look down below at our snazzy graphic for proof. France are just shading possession and territory, but there's hardly a cigarette paper between the two sides after the opening quarter.
