That's the 10th penalty conceded by New Zealand on the night - not great discipline from the world champions that.

Kurt Morath to go for goal... and Tonga are back within two converted tries of the All Blacks.

New Zealand have done what is says on the tin. Let's be honest, they are not playing great rugby but they have been effective."

It had to come. New Zealand were onto their second advantage right under the sticks when they shipped it wide...

Nehe Milner-Skudder stepped off that piston-like right foot and Fetu'u Vainikolo could do nothing to prevent the try.

It's amazing to think that if Tonga had been awarded a penalty try just before half time they would have been within a point of New Zealand. It would have been no more than they deserved."

Here come Tonga again... brutal collision after brutal collision... and they work a four-man overlap! But their skills let them down at the death...

We come back for a penalty for the All Blacks going off their feet at a ruck though...

New Zealand's Ben Smith is the stand-out player so far tonight.

He has run the most with ball in hand - 77m - from 11 carries and most importantly has scored a try.

Peep goes the whistle, up goes the ball and we're under way for the second half at St James' Park...

The St James' Park pitch is tearing up tonight and with Samoa against Scotland coming up tomorrow at the stadium it will need some serious TLC before Newcastle's Premier League match against Norwich on 18 October.

Steve Hansen will be spewing, as they say in his parts, with that All Blacks first-half performance. The Tongan pack have got New Zealand on the run and when they got their rolling maul going, All Blacks scattered like skittles.

Tonga were camped on the line for the last three or four minutes. It looked for all the world they were going to score and I think the referee got himself in a muddle. He wasn't brave enough after three or four scrum collapses to award a penalty."

  19. Turnover trouble for ABspublished at 20:53

    New Zealand 14-3 Tonga

New Zealand may have scored two tries but turnovers (they have conceded seven) are hurting the All Blacks and it is an area they will want to tighten up. Tonga may be behind but they are making fewer mistakes, conceding only three turnovers.

No try rules the TMO, no luck for Tonga.

They deserved a score for their efforts and New Zealand will count themselves very, very lucky not to have conceded a try then.

The Tongans probably got it over the line but there was no evidence they got it down.
