So it's job done for Gregor Townsend and his players as they open their summer tour with a five-try victory over Italy.

The heat and humidity in Singapore proved problematic at times but the Scots stuck to their game-plan and got their reward through tries from Ross Ford (2), Ali Price, Tim Visser and Damien Hoyland.

“It was ok for a first hit-out. We said all week we wanted to play with a pace and a tempo that the opposition would find difficult which I think we did to begin with. We maybe fell off a bit midway through the first half but it certainly paid dividends at the end of the game.

"It’s a good build-up (for Australia) for us. Tough conditions but I think the boys handled it well. It puts us in good stead for next weekend.

"I’ve doubled my tries record so a pleasing night for myself.”

Professional performance by Scotland. Not rock 'n' roll, not one that will live long in the memory - unless you're the free-scoring Ross Ford, that is - but it was a solid start to Gregor Townsend's time.

Main plus was the reintroduction of WP Nel after a year out. He's back and Scotland will be all the better for it.

Italy were largely dreadful. Their discipline was wretched and they scored their tries when the game was as good as over.

Scotland did enough. Not a huge amount, but enough. The conditions were very tough. That's a hugely important consideration in all of this

Gregor Townsend will be satisfied with a five-try victory in his first match in charge of Scotland.

Tries from Ross Ford (2), Ali Price, Tim Visser and Damien Hoyland saw the Scots home.

The stifling humidity made life difficult at times but all in all a very decent performance.

Italy have the last word as the ball is whipped wide to wing Angelo Esposito to dive over in the corner.

That will annoy Gregor Townsend.

Italy look to give the scoreboard a more respectable look in the dying moments of the game.

Carlo Canna puts in a clever little grubber-kick which Tommaso Boni looks to dive on for the score but Duncan Taylor brilliantly covers to snuff out the danger. He clatters Boni in the process and the Italian centre is forced off with a head injury.

Scotland are rewarded for maintaining possession in Italian territory.

The ball is shipped out to the right touchline and Duncan Taylor fixes the defender before slipping the pass to Damien Hoyland to dive over in the corner for his first international try.

Peter Horne nails a wonderful conversion from the touchline.

Once again Italy's discipline fails them.

Scotland have a scrum near the Italian line. The referee wants it reset but after he blows the whistle Italy substitute Abraham Steyn lifts Henry Pyrgos off his feet and dumps him dangerously to the ground on his pack.

Stupid play and a deserved yellow.

Really sloppy play from Scotland is punished.

Magnus Bradbury fails to hold a loose pass in midfield and Italy flanker Maxime Mbanda snatches the ball and races clear. He is taken down but offloads to Michele Campagnaro who has the gas to outstrip the defence to score.

The Scots will not be happy with that self-inflicted error.

Scotland are on the front foot again and after a few phases work their way into the Italian 22 but captain John Barclay knocks on and the Italians breathe again.

The latest change sees Magnus Bradbury enter the fray to replace Tim Swinson.

The fresh legs will hopefully inject some energy back into proceedings as, much like the first half, the pace of the match has dropped off a cliff.

He's scored two tries tonight after claiming just two in his previous 107 internationals....

The changes are coming thick and fast now. Zander Fagerson, Fraser Brown and Gordon Reid are on to form an all-new front row, while Rob Harley comes into the back row to replace Josh Strauss.
