A famous win in Sydney for Scotland as the Gregor Townsend era continues to build towards something special.

Finn Russell was again the standout performer, and he crossed the whitewash along with Duncan Taylor in the first half, only to be pegged back by two Israel Folau touchdowns.

Will Genia's try put the Wallabies in front after the break, but an extraordinary Hamish Watson try, finishing off a sweeping move, gave the Scots an advantage they would not surrender.

Some phenomenal defending saw the Scots over the line for a win that moves them up to an all-time high position of fourth in the world rankings.

What an incredible win for Gregor Townsend's Scotland side in Sydney. We learned earlier today that Finn Russell is heading for New Zealand to join us with the British & Irish Lions squad, and if Warren Gatland was watching his performance here then he may not be merely a fixture in the midweek side as has been suggested. The fly-half was sensational throughout.

He was not alone, with John Barclay, Hamish Watson and Duncan Taylor among many players to produce outstanding displays.

This result moves Scotland up to fourth in the world rankings, their highest ever position.

Exciting times.

Scotland hold on for a famous win.

The Wallabies looked for all the world like they were about to inflict yet more late misery on Scotland when Tevita Kuridrani crashed through the midfield but Michael Hooper was penalised for failing to release on the floor.

Finn Russell kicks the ball into touch and the Scotland players go wild.

Incredibly that is back-to-back wins for the Scots in Australia.

Wallabies are awarded a penalty eight seconds from the end.

They kick to the corner......

Michael Hooper slices through in the loose and Scotland are back-peddling.

Australia look ready to breakthrough but John Barclay and Allan Dell combine to force a brilliant turnover and are awarded the penalty.

Scotland are a minute away from a famous win.

Henry Pyrgos, onm for Ali Price, feeds the ball into the scrum. Josh Strauss picks up from the base and takes the ball into contact. The ball is fed back to Finn Russell who clears his lines.

The Aussies claim the line-out but a brilliant turnover allows Greig Tonks to clear.

But here come the Wallabies again.....

Scotland just can not get out of their own 22 at the moment.

The Wallabies have a line-out on the 5m line but it's messy and the knock on to give the Scots a scrum on their own 5m line.

Huge scrum.....

All the play is in Scotland territory now.

The ball goes wide to Israel Folau on the left touchline but he is tackled well by Alex Dunbar.

The Aussies come again but just when they look to have worked some space out wide a pass is fired into touch and the Scots breathe again.

Again the Aussies come back strong with some brilliant handling from Israel Folau and Tevita Kuridrani taking them to the brink of the line.

Will Genia is stopped just short. The ball is whipped wide to Folau but he is denied by a magnificent last-ditch tackle from Russell.

Play is brought back for a penalty but from that Scotland hold the ball up in the tackle and it's a scrum to the Scots.

Outstanding defence.

After heartbreaking single-point losses in their last two meetings with Australia, no Scotland fan will be thinking this is job done.

The Scots are playing very well though, none more so than Finn Russell who has been at his electric best. He sells a dummy in midfield and pops a pass to John Barclay who crashes through into wide open space but just as the Scotland captain is licking his lips for a run to the try-line he is pulled back by the referee.

The replay shows the pass from Russell was forward.

What. A. Try.

If you thought Scotland's try against Italy last weekend was special then this was something else.

The Scots run from deep in their own territory and Finn Russell makes a break. The ball is kept alive through Alex Dunbar and Lee Jones before Greig Tonks feeds Duncan Taylor and the Saracens man shows great composure to draw his man and put Hamish Watson in for the score.

A truly exceptional try. Russell converts and Scotland lead by five.

Josh Strauss comes on to replace Ryan Wilson at number eight for Scotland and the big bearded man immediately makes his mark with a crunching tackle.

The pressure from Australia is relentless and the Scots can't hold on.

Several Wallabies have a crack at the line and Scotland do superbly well to keep out Michael Hooper and Tevita Kuridrani, but they simply run out of defenders and Will Genia dives over from a yard for his 11th international try.

Foley converts to put Australia ahead for the first time in the match.

There is plenty of action in the midfield with both sides carrying hard and punching some holes, but both sides are struggling to build any real pressure through a combination of handling errors and penalties.

The Aussies get on the front foot and progress into the Scottish 22 but as Israel Folau comes into the line in search of a hat-trick try he spills the ball forward.

Gregor Townsend will be happy with the pressure his side have applied in defence which he will feel has forced many of these handling errors from the Wallabies.
