  5. 'It brought a tear to my eye'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 19 May 2018

    FT: Exeter 36-5 Newcastle

Exeter forward Thomas Waldrom told BT Sport:

"I think in the first half we didn't do much defending and when that's the case you feel a bit fresher. Big credit to the boys - we've worked hard all week and it showed in the result today.

"I love this place. I don't know why it just clicked down here - I have to give credit to the coaches and the players.

"It brought a tear to my eye when I came on and I had to wipe them away so I could see the ball!"

    FT: Exeter 36-5 Newcastle

Exeter scrum-half Nic White told BT Sport:

"I think the scoreline probably doesn't reflect how hard that was and how hard Newcastle made that game for us.

"But none of that matters now, we go onto next week now.

"We're having fun, we're working hard and we'll see where it takes us."

You just knew they would, didn't you?

Thomas Waldrom's last touch of a rugby ball at Sandy Park is up there with his best, skipping the first challenge and then superbly teeing up Don Armand to cross from close range.

Gareth Steenson adds the extras and...

Oh boy, if ever a moment summed up a team performance it's this.

Alex Tait manages to drop the ball just as he goes to ground it - as I say, absolutely and completely unchallenged - and the try won't stand.

    It's an embarrassing one.

    Exeter 29-5 Newcastle

This has been a scrappy old second half, with infringements from both sides spoiling the ebb and flow of the game. This time Exeter are the guilty party, allowing Newcastle to kick to touch.

The Falcons are treating the ball a bit like a hot potato, but three or four handling mistakes in succession somehow send it backwards each time and still they pour forward...

Newcastle actually manage to steal it, but Toby Flood's pass is a forward one and the move breaks down.

It just about sums up the Falcons' afternoon, in truth.

Exeter have a scrum inside the Newcastle half, roared on by a jubilant home crowd - now very much looking forward to another trip to the capital next week.

There was a little bit of chink in the armour then when Newcastle scored, but Exeter snuffed that out with seven points of their own and that charge down for Newcastle's conversion by Lachie Turner really lifted the Chiefs again.

The try is ruled out for an earlier obstruction from Don Armand, however, sparking boos from the home crowd.

I can't imagine it'll really matter in the grand scheme of things, mind you.
