So, Bristol Bears become the third promoted team in the last four seasons to win their opening fixture.

Next up for Pat Lam's outfit is a meeting with the reigning champions at Allianz Park. After that, they will make a trip to Kingsholm and will duel with Gloucester.

Iain Nash: Absolutely nothing better than beating your local rivals on the first day of the season - C’mon Bris!

Mike Gill: Not a great standard, but exciting as the game went on. Both sides will improve I am sure. Good performance by the officials, including the TMO, used exactly as he should be.

Bristol Bears director of rugby Pat Lam told BT Sport:

"When you're under pressure it's about being able to show resilience and character and stay together as a team.

"We were under a lot of pressure, we got done in the penalty count and spent a lot of time in our own half. I'm extremely proud of the boys."

This has got to be a huge boost in the arm for Bristol.

They are a stronger side than two years ago, they are more experienced and they have more know-how to control a game.

If Bath play like this they will struggle in the Premiership.

What a night it has been at Ashton Gate. It is Bristol's night.

Bath have been poor, but let's not take it away from Bristol, they have done what they had to do.

When they were down to 14 men they defended manfully and came away with three points from a penalty.

But for me there were not enough Bath players who turned up tonight.

Bristol Bears, in front of a club record attendance, have marked their return to Premiership rugby with a gutsy victory over their West Country Rivals.

The newly promoted Championship outfit had to navigate their way through a period with 14-men and kept their cool when they found themselves 9-10 down at the start of the final quarter.

Freddie Burns eats up the metres and a second penalty is conceded by Bristol Bears for a side entry from Jake Woolmore.

With the advantage, Burns goes for the cross-field kick but it's collected by the home side. We go back for the penalty, the fly-half puts the ball into the corner and Bath construct the lineout.

The shock rings around the ground as the lineout throw isn't straight... the clock is now in the red.

With less than thee minutes remaining Bath have the ball and have 70-metres to navigate up-field if they're going to snatch victory.

Advantage is being played for a high tackle and a Freddie Burns' knock-on means that the visitors will use the penalty. That's Bath's 16th handling error of the game...

The home fans roar as Alapati Leiua crosses once again, but, the pass from Jake Armstrong in the build-up did travel forwards. Scrum time for Bath.

That's an outstanding effort from Bristol. Down to 14 men, they made some changes, got some energy and forced Bath into a mistake. It's great play.

The Bristol crowd sense a kill, they sense a win.

Sometimes when sides come up from the Championship they struggle with Premiership intensity but right now the home side aren't looking tired, instead they're upping their energy.

The Bears' line speed pressures Bath and when Jamie Roberts is penalised at the breakdown for holding, Ian Madigan steps up.

Just in case you were wondering, there's one minute left on Tusi Pisi's sin-bin period.

Francois Louw was playing for South Africa against Argentina in Mendoza just six days ago... no great surprise if he isn't at his sharpest tonight.

Ian Madigan's clearance is a long one but it didn't find touch and gave Bath the chance to counter back.

Tom Homer sets off at purpose, Tom Dunn makes more ground before Rhys Priestland's penalty bisects the uprights and puts Bath in front for the first time.

Bristol Bears do an excellent job to anchor the scrum and get the ball into the hands of their fly-half.

In the first half we saw Ian Madigan make the wrong decision and look to run it out, this time he boots it long.

Bath take the scrum and work off it. Jamie Roberts looks to turn the screw but he knocks on at pace.

Now it's Bristol Bears' turn to have the put in and they remain less than 10 metres from their own line.

This time Bath play the ball out and Taulupe Faletau comes within inches of grounding on the post.

The visitors recycle the ball and when scrum-half Chris Cook looks to swing it wide Tusi Pisi flies a mile offside. He's penalised for that and a deliberate knock-on... is this a turning point?

The scrum results in a second penalty and before the next scrum both teams make some changes.

For the home side, Shaun Malton comes on for Harry Thacker at hooker while Bath bring on Elliot Stooke in their second-row and Francois Louw arrives to take Sam Underhill's place.
