  1. Over and out... and over to Dublinpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 33-20 Italy

We'll leave it there. A strange game in some ways, but eight tries - five to Scotland, three late ones for Italy - to whet the appetite for what lies ahead.

Blair Kinghorn, incidentally, became the first Scotland player to score a hat-trick in the Six Nations, and the first to score three in the Championship since Iwan Tukalo against Ireland in 1989.

The anthems are under way in Dublin, so join our live coverage of that game now.

While Italy lick their wounds and head back to Rome ahead of Wales' visit next Saturday, Scotland will enjoy a small celebration and then get ready for an altogether bigger test against Ireland next Saturday.

For anyone looking for omens, the last time Scotland won the title 20 years ago, they won their first game by the same score - 33-20 - against Wales.

    Just saying...

Thanks for your company today. Til the next time...

  2. Scotland 'have got to improve' - Townsendpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 33-20 Italy

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on BBC One.

"We started really well with two minutes of ball-in-play time and almost scored, and had the try disallowed.

"Italy had their moments in the first half and I felt we needed more. We stepped up the pace at the start of the second half and got ahead on the scoreboard.

"The last 15 minutes was disappointing. Obviously the yellow card had a bearing on that and there are a few areas to work on but the first 60 minutes were very pleasing."

Scotland next welcome champions Ireland to Murrayfield, again for a 14:15 kick-off next Saturday.

"Ireland will test you wherever they sense an area of opportunity," Townsend added. "They will run it from their own 22 if we have not got our spacing right, they will test us at the set-piece and are an excellent defensive team as well.

"We have got to improve from today, but I was pleased with the way we managed the game. Finn Russell and Stuart Hogg were excellent with their kicking game and their decision-making on the ball. That is going to be important next week."

Ireland are the best team in the world at the moment and I'm just hoping it's such a war of attrition against England that they lose their entire XV for a couple of weeks. The problem with that, though, is that they've got such strength in depth

Bear in mind - like you'd forgotten - that Ireland v England will be kicking off in a little over 15 minutes.

  4. 'We can't release a Test match like that'published at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 33-20 Italy

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw on BBC One:

"We were quite happy with the middle part of the game, the way we put Italy under pressure. But we have got a couple of things to work on before Ireland come here next week, but that is a positive thing.

"Against quality opposition like Ireland, we can't release a Test match like that. We were well in control and just gave Italy momentum by being less aggressive and slipping off tackles.

"That will heighten our awareness for next week against a quality team."

  5. 'We can score tries' - Parissepublished at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 33-20 Italy

Italy captain Sergio Parisse said on BBC One:

"With possession we are dangerous and can score tries but Scotland deserved the win. They dominated the game.

"The last 10 minutes was a good base as we prepare to face Wales.

"We want to keep the ball. We let Scotland have too much possession in the first half at this level. It's good to defend but you can't defend all the time.

"Becoming the most capped player in the Six Nations is a good personal achievement. Now I’m just trying to move forward and enjoy this tournament.

"I'm a bit frustrated by this defeat but it's important to focus on the next game now."

  7. Scotland 'dug in at the end' - Kinghornpublished at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 33-20 Italy

Speaking on BBC One, Scotland wing Blair Kinghorn said:

"I’m delighted with the result in front of another capacity crowd. We dug in at the end to get the win.

"Credit to our boys. They’re awesome and credit to Italy because they brought everything to the game at the end.

"Our accuracy was a lot better in the second half. We took our chances when they were available and it was brilliant to get a couple of tries out of it."

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC One

Scotland have done the job and they've done it very well. There's enough in the game to give Italy a bit of hope. Scotland should be disappointed with the defensive lapse at the end but there's a lot for them to go forward with.

So three tries for Italy in the final nine minutes, taking full advantage of Scotland prop Simon Berghan being sent to the sin-bin.

No doubt defence coach Matt Taylor will have a few things to say about that finale, but overall it's job done for Scotland. A win and a bonus point.

    Onwards to Ireland.

    Chris Paterson
Former Scotland international on BBC One

Scotland's defence is much narrower. There's no pressure on the ball for Italy.

With one man in the bin, sometimes you just don't contest. Credit to Italy as well, they've moved the ball into space well.

You have to give a lot of credit to the number two scrum-half Guglielmo Palazzani. He recognised that the option was on at blind-side and showed very good hands.

    Guglielmo Palazzani

Italy get their reward, as scrum-half Guglielmo Palazzani, called into the side just before kick-off after Teto Tibaldi pulled up in the warm-up, burrows over.

Tommaso Allan adds the conversion before trooping off, Ian McKinley - on earlier after Allan had a head injury assessment - coming back on.

  20. Yellow card - Simon Berghanpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    Scotland 33-3 Italy
