Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill is "satisfied" and "relieved" at his side's victory, telling BBC Scotland: "We are a big team now. We are in the quarter-finals of the European Cup."

Not just a quarter-final, but one back at Murrayfield, where they are unbeaten in nine games this season.

"Why can't we bring Munster, or Exeter, or whoever it is here and beat them? There is no reason why not. It is in our own heads. We are going to do everything we can to win."

Those quarter-finals, by the way, are on the weekend of 30-31 March.

Those Edinburgh players not joining up with the Scotland squad this week will be jetting off to South Africa instead for the relatively minor matter of a Pro14 game against Southern Kings next weekend.

A happy Edinburgh captain Stuart McInally has been speaking to host broadcaster BT Sport.

"The way we set about the scrum stood us in good stead and we are massively proud of that," he said. "We are really excited to get back here for the quarter-final.

"We knew the quality of player Montpellier had; they they had a period in our 22 where we held them out, and that probably won us the game.

"We have just worked as hard as we can and it is nice to see the rewards are coming."

Edinburgh managed that game well once they got the fillip of that Darcy Graham try to move more than score clear.

It's testament to the change of mentality head coach Richard Cockerill has instilled in his 18 months in charge.

With a home quarter-final to come, that may not be the end of their run in this competition.

You'd have got long odds on Edinburgh emerging top of a pool including two French heavyweights in Toulon and Montpellier, plus Newcastle, but they have won five successive Champions Cup games in a row after a narrow defeat in Montpellier first up, and seven successive matches in all. Incredible.

Heady days for Scottish rugby.

This is the first time both sides have made it through to the last eight of Europe's elite competition in the same year.

Montpellier launch a raid down the left flank but Vincent Martin's pass to Jan Serfontein goes to ground, and that might be the visitors' last chance.

Edinburgh will take their time over this scrum.

Edinburgh are winding down the clock nicely, Bill Mata going off the back of the scrum, a few more pick-and-goes...

The 11,802 crowd inside Murrayfield - a record Edinburgh crowd for a European pool match - and plenty of Glasgow fans too are willing them on to the finish.

They can almost taste that quarter-final spot now...

With eight minutes left, Edinburgh replace their entire front-row trio of Pierre Schoeman, Stuart McInally and WP Nel, who have all put in a brilliant shift.

Allan Dell, David Cherry and Simon Berghan are on, and Berghan's first contribution is to get over the ball and win a penalty. Tremendous.

Stern Vern is not slow to show his displeasure, and hooks Yacouba Camara after his untimely knock-on. Kelian Galletier is on in his place.

Montpellier take off their scrum-half general Ruan Pienaar and bring on Benoit Paillaugue in his place.

The Murrayfield crowd are roaring on Edinburgh now, sensing they are getting on top.

Another line-out in the visitors' 22, Grant Gilchrist takes it...they're launching themselves at the line. Did Bill Mata get over there? No. The move is still alive though...
