    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Solid chase from Ah See Tuala as he drags Kotaro Matsushima to the ground and then Japan are penalised for coming into the ruck from the side.

Another penalty right in front of the sticks for Samoa. The hosts are teeing up points for their opponents.

    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Lomano Lemeki sticks it high into the Toyota sky and almost takes a great catch in mid-air, but he's pipped to it and that leaves space for a Samoa break.

Good scrambling defence from the red and white hosts to get back behind the ball.

A bit scrappy from both sides early in this second 40.

Japan have been out doing shuttle runs during half-time...

Samoa get this one back under way.

    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Japan have made 275 metres to Samoa's 128 so far, with the likes of Samoan-born try scorer Timothy Lafaele and wingers Kotaro Matsushima and Lomano Lemeki impressing.

But they also lead on the penalty count (6-5) and that's keeping Samoa within touching distance at the break.

    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Glimpses of the Japan we saw against Ireland last week, but Jamie Joseph's side haven't completely hit their straps so far in Toyota. They looked a little nervy when favourites in the opening game against Russia, too. A big half coming up for the Brave Blossoms.

I think Japan will feel slightly frustrated that they haven't been able to get a good grasp of this game but they knew it would be physical, and Samoa have stayed in the game with those penalties.

    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Wonderful hands from the Japanese backs, before Kotaro Matsushima runs into a gap that's bustling with blue shirts and busier than the Shibuya crossing - the ball spills loose, and that's the gong.

    Japan 16-9 Samoa

Short line-out from Samoa, mixing it up and almost catching Japan by surprise. It's spun left but with too much venom and spilled into Japanese hands.

Yutaka Nagare's box kick is charged down, but that was forward off a blue shirt earlier on.

And there's a man in the crowd with his Japan shirt literally painted on...

TJ Ioane is back from the bin and Samoa return to 15 with just the one try conceded.

That is an important score and Henry Taefu looked relaxed taking that kick. It was straight and true and secured Samoa the three points.

    That's got the legs.

Henry Taefu reduces the deficit to seven points.

Samoa might get another chance here.

A clumsy charge down sees James Moore make contact late with a blue shirt, and Henry Taefu will have another dig...

  13. Missed penaltypublished at 32 mins

    Japan 16-6 Samoa

Samoa, a man down, are looking to get points on the board at every opportunity but this is a long way out for Henry Taefu, and the centre tugs it wide.

What a clever move by Jamie Joseph to take the captaincy off Michael Leitch because he can just concentrate on what he is good at and he turns over the ball.

Then it's all about the speed of Kotaro Matsushima and it's a great try.

    Timothy Lafaele

    There it is!

Kotaro Matsushima's wonderful run is rewarded as the Brave Blossoms swiftly move it left through hands to find Timothy Lafaele at pace.

The centre tucks up and hits the line with power to fall over the whitewash with a blue shirt clinging on.

    Yu Tamura adds the extras.

    Japan 9-6 Samoa

There's a hype around the stadium every time Lomano Lemeki gets the ball, but this time the winger opts to boot one downfield.

Both teams trade kicks, vying for territory, before Samoa look to take it into contact.

Japan turn the ball over and might have the numbers, it moves right to Kotaro Matsushima and he wriggles his way through but is stopped just short.

Was that a late hit? We're going to the TMO... Looks like plenty of shoulder, too - and with that, Samoa flanker TJ Ioane finds himself in the sin-bin.

Can Japan make their numerical advantage count?

Sweet as you like from Yu Tamura. The fly-half doesn't appear to be feeling any pressure so far. Japan edge back in front.

This is a good opportunity for Japan to exhibit their authority on the game and just notch up another points.

Samoa are caught holding on. And Yu Tamura will have another crack at the sticks. A little further out but pretty central...
