I think Gregor Townsend will be very disappointed, but not wrecked by the defeat. It's really encouraging that at no point did it look as though Scotland would go away and fold in this game.

  4. 'We must be more than tough to beat'published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2020

More from Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend.

"We've got to make sure we're better than just being tough to beat, he said on Rugby Sportsound.

"We were in the arm wrestle today and the effort was outstanding. But to take that next step we've got to take our opportunities and be accurate when we have them.

Asked if improving the attack is now the priority, Townsend said: "Yes and no, defence will always be the priority. And Test match rugby is about having a very good defence. A defence is never there forever, you've got to keep working on it. Today we'll be disappointed with a a couple of things we did defensively just as we were with our attack and around the set-piece.

"It's just continual work on all areas. What we're learning about this group of players is that they put massive effort in for their country."

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has given his reaction on Rugby Sportsound on BBC Radio Scotland.

"I felt we played some good rugby in the first half," he said. "Tactically we put them under pressure with our kicking game and when we got into their half I thought we held onto ball well. That led to some go forward and penalties.

"But France showed their strength at times too especially around the set-piece. It was quite an equal game and one breakthrough put us on the back foot and we just weren't accurate enough in the last 15-20 minutes to make most of the opportunities that did come around."

If France beat Italy and England see off Wales, the pair will meet in the final at Twickenham.

I think France have enough to beat England. You need something special to beat England because their defence is so good. France have that ability. Whether they have the discipline to see it out, who knows?

  7. Scotland missing Russell?published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2020

    FT: Scotland 15-22 France

It's worth remembering that Scotland are missing their main creative force in Finn Russell, and their second-choice fly-half Adam Hastings. You'd imagine they would create a bit more with Russell in the side.

Not to slight Duncan Weir, who has stepped up admirably in the last two games and was excellent off the tee today.

Scotland's inability to create more try-scoring moments in the match was really disappointing.

  9. 'We've got a lot to learn' - Hoggpublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2020

    FT: Scotland 15-22 France

Scotland captain Stuart Hogg has just given his post-match thoughts to broadcaster Amazon Prime.

"Frustrating," he said. "We've got a lot to learn, but we feel in a good place. We didn't turn rubbish overnight, but it's back to the drawing board.

"It probably wasn't great to watch at times, but it was the team that didn't crack first that won in the end. We'll get back on the horse."

On his last-minute kick dead which ended Scotland's chance of a draw.

"I'll take it on the chin, I made a mistake. I'm old enough and ugly enough to realise that, I don't need other people to tell me."

You're never going to impose your game on the opposition for 80 minutes. In the moments when you're in control of the game and have the upper hand, you've got to make them count

They were in the game right to the death. I think they'll be disappointed with their performance. There were a lot of errors in that second half. [But] A lot of positives and a good outlook for the future.

  13. Full-time - Scotland 15-22 Francepublished at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2020

Virimi Vakatawa's early second-half score is the difference between the sides. Scotland defended admirably, but it was the French who showed more in attack.

It's a first defeat in six Tests for Scotland.

Scotland get one last chance from a scrum. They'll have to go from their own half to snatch a draw...

Surely that is that. George Turner runs into his own man as Scotland advanced and France have the penalty.

As competitive as Scotland have been, they've shown virtually nothing in attack after the break.

And they don't...as the French jumper Dylan Cretin gets a hand to the ball.

The French knock-on though and Scotland still have a platform from the scrum. Time running out...

Thomas Ramos just tried to kick a penalty from his own half...Safe to say it fell short.

After an exchange of kicks, Ramos then puts it out on the full! Scotland have a lineout on France's 10m line.

    They need to secure it.

Well, well, well. Stuart Hogg drills a kick right into the France 22. Gael Fickou pushes it into touch and Scotland have the lineout!

It looked as though Fickou was pushed by Duhan Van der Merwe, though.

In the end, it doesn't matter as France win the penalty. Game over? Great counter-ruck by France, who capitalise on a sloppy lineout.

Penalty Scotland this time! These scrum calls are just 50/50 in all honesty. Anyway, Scotland will absolutely take it.

    They're into France's half...
