  3. 'We expect a full on battle'published at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

    Ireland v Argentina (14:15 GMT)

Argentina arrive in Dublin having snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating Italy last week.

The Pumas made history last November by beating the All Blacks for the first time, and are hoping to claim a first win in Dublin this afternoon.

"They can be unorthodox opponents and offload the ball at unexpected moments," said Ireland head coach Andy Farrell.

"We have got to be aware of the fact they beat the best team in the world and they have beaten us in big matches in the past.

"They have come to Dublin mindful they have not had a result here before which should spur them on. We are expecting a full on battle."

Not to ruin the feel-good factor surrounding Irish rugby, but similar to the Japan game there are more than a few spare seats at the Aviva this afternoon.

A real shame. Ticket pricing remains a deterrent to many.

  6. Three changes for Argentinapublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

    Ireland v Argentina (14:15 GMT)

Argentina have made three personnel changes to their starting XV which beat the Italians 37-19 in Treviso last weekend.

Head coach Kieran Crowley has recalled Guido Petti and Santiago Grondona to his pack, while Lucio Cinti replaces Santiago Cordero on the wing.

Petti's inclusion at lock leads to a reshuffle among the forwards, with Marcos Kremer moving into the back row alongside Grondona and Pablo Matera, who switches from blindside flanker to number eight on the occasion of his 80th Test.

In the backline, Cinti will line up on the left flank, meaning Mateo Carreras switches to the right. Uncapped Exeter back Facundo Cordero could make his international debut from the bench.

Argentina have never won in Dublin - suffering defeat on each of their previous nine visits - but have recorded three World Cup victories over their hosts.

    Argentina: E Boffelli; M Carreras, M Moroni, J De La Fuente, L Cinti; S Carreras, T Cubelli; T Gallo, J Montoya (capt), F Gomez Kodela, G Petti, T Lavanini, S Grondona, M Kremer, P Matera.

    Replacements: F Bosch, I Calles, E Bello, L Paulos, I Facundo, G Bertranou, N Sanchez, F Lamb.

Ireland have already moved on from their win 29-20 over New Zealand and turned their attentions to Argentina, says stand-in captain James Ryan.

The hosts are looking to make it three Autumn Test wins from three and extend their winning run to eight.

"It was a great win for us but we're not going to get carried away either," said Ryan.

"By the time we came in on Monday everybody had turned the page and were looking at Argentina straight away."

Ireland's win over the All Blacks was met with euphoria inside the Aviva Stadium and beyond, down in no small part to the impressive manner in which the victory was delivered.

"It does give us confidence that what we're doing is working, the big thing for us now is just being consistent," Ryan continued.

"It is probably a bit easier when you're the underdog. That has probably suited Irish teams in the past but we've got to be able to perform like we're not always the underdog.

"We want to be able to perform consistently so this week is the first opportunity for that."

  8. 'Faz told me to be myself'published at 14:01 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

    Ireland v Argentina (14:15 GMT)

With captain Johnny Sexton ruled out for at least six weeks, lock James Ryan will assume the role exactly a year on from the first time he skippered the side from the start, against England in last year's Autumn Nations Cup.

The 25-year-old is seen by most as the next Ireland captain once Sexton departs, having led the team during the summer Tests against Japan and the USA.

"When I initially did it it did feel like a weight on my shoulders in some ways," he said.

"When I started it was hard not to feel like that but I don't feel that same way anymore. It doesn't actually change a whole lot for me, through the week we have a lot of guys there who are very good in a leadership capacity.

"The advice Faz [Andy Farrell] gave me when I first got the captaincy was to be myself and focus on my own game, and that's the best advice I could have got."

James Ryan spoke this week about Ireland's need to play as well when they are favourites as they do as underdogs.

They're certainly fancied today, with form and history on their side against a team arrive in Dublin looking for their first win here at the 10th attempt.

Ireland have won seven of the last eight meetings, but of course would sacrifice all seven for the one that they lost at the 2015 World Cup.

Argentina do arrive having snapped their seven-game losing streak last week in Italy. An expected win perhaps, but it's good to get into the habit as Ireland, whose current winning run started in Rome, know very well.

  10. Catt backs Carbery at fly-halfpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

Joey Carbery has the attributes to "do what's right" for Ireland at fly-half while showing his full range of skills against Argentina, assistant coach Mike Catt says.

With Johnny Sexton ruled out, injury-plagued Carbery will make only his ninth Ireland start after his superb late cameo in the win over New Zealand.

"Rugby's about decision-making and that's all they have to do," said Catt.

"Just make the right decisions and then bring their X-factor on top of that."

Catt added: "Joey, he's very good and it's just making sure we get the right platform for him to be able to show his point of difference. I think that's crucial for us."

  11. Wins coming with consistencypublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

Andy Farrell has resisted the urge to make wholesale changes and in doing so given another indication of how he views his own job in the Irish rugby set up.

His job is to select a team best suited to winning the match - he has largely settled on his best team and is comfortable sticking with it.

Of the five changes to Ireland's XV, four are enforced while exciting Ulster wing Robert Baloucoune gets the chance to shine.

A big day too for captain fantastic James Ryan. Since his introduction to the team in 2018 he has been a nailed on starter and for years we said the same of his Lions prospects, only for the first real dip in form of his professional career seeing him miss the tour altogether.

The lock seems to have put those troubles behind him and has been back to his busy best so far this month.

  12. Henshaw returns for Irelandpublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

Robbie Henshaw will make his first appearance of the season as one of five changes to Ireland's starting XV.

Henshaw is named at inside centre with Bundee Aki missing out through a minor knee injury and is recalled after he sustained a foot injury upon return from the British and Irish Lions tour, during which he started all three Tests.

"In my experience world class players generally can come back in without too much game time," said head coach Andy Farrell.

"He has been in and around camp and he has looked great in training in past few days. I think he will add to the performance."

  13. O'Mahony in for Conanpublished at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2021

    Ireland v Argentina (14:15 GMT)

Ireland have been forced into a late change to their starting XV with Peter O'Mahony replacing the injured Jack Conan.

Caelan Doris moves to number eight with O'Mahony starting at blindside flanker.

With Ryan Baird coming onto the bench, Tadhg Beirne's role likely changes as he's now the only back-row option among the replacements.
