  6. Tadhg Furlong captaincy a 'shrewd move' - Bestpublished at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Prop Furlong has been a key player for his country for some time but has never captained the side.

He will lead the team out with regular captain Johnny Sexton not involved.

"Tadhg is such a quality rugby player," Best said.

"I think it's a really shrewd move by Andy Farrell to give it to somebody who if you're being really honest, when Johnny Sexton retires, is not going to be the next cab off the rank to be captain.

"It's giving somebody within the squad who is going to be a guaranteed starter when fit a role of responsibility.

"It's showing him what it's like to be captain so he can help feed in and stand up, and I've no doubt that he is a big leader around the place anyway."

  7. 'Chance for Irish fringe players to shine'published at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

It may not possess the glamour of a Test match against world champions South Africa, but Fiji's visit to Dublin is still generating plenty of excitement if the masses of green bobble hat-wearing fans on Lansdowne Road are anything to go by.

And it's not hard to see why. With 15 wins in 17 matches, including wins over the Springboks and All Blacks, there's a great deal of buzz around this Ireland side.

Sure, some of the big guns - Sexton, O'Mahony - have been rested for today's Test, but much has been made of the depth of Andy Farrell's squad, and this afternoon gives some of the fringe players a chance to shine ahead of next week's match against the Wallabies.

Fiji play an expansive brand of rugby. This should be a fun watch.

Well react with the thumbs up button if you got this one correct.

Earlier we asked can you name the other player who played on Sexton’s debut who has been capped by Andy Farrell?

A young Keith Earls was the other player. He is currently injured but he went on the winning summer tour to New Zealand and, with 98 caps, will be hoping Andy Farrell lets him join the 100 club when he is back fit.

  9. The rise of Crowleypublished at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Only 6 months ago Munster’s Jack Crowley was third choice fly-half for his province with questions over whether his development was stalling.

The Emerging Ireland tour provided him a platform to showcase his talents which many saw at Ireland U20 level. Although Ciaran Frawley would certainly have been in line to make his international debut, today gives Crowley his first chance at grabbing the third choice fly-half spot ahead of next year’s World Cup in France.

Ronan O’Gara has spoken about being a big fan of the 22-year-old. An Irish legend with 128 caps can't be a bad name to have singing your praises.

  10. The debutantspublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Today could see potentially three new caps for Ireland.

Uncapped Munster duo Jeremy Loughman and Jack Crowley are joined by Connacht’s Cian Prendergast in the matchday squad.

Loughman, 27, is the only starter out of the trio and is five years older than both Crowley and Prendergast. Patience has been key for the prop who has turned down approaches from USA in the past in order to fulfil his dream of putting on the green jersey.

  12. The next heir to Sexton?published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Johnny Sexton made his international debut, in a man of the match performance against Fiji in November 2009. Ireland won the fixture 41-6 in which Sexton scored 16 points from the kicking tee, a perfect record in difficult weather conditions at the RDS Arena.

The Leinster fly-half then went on to start ahead of Ronan O’Gara the following week against South Africa. The rest was history!

Can potential debutant Jack Crowley make this story go full circle and take Sexton’s jersey next week? Unlikely yes but a cool narrative.

Joey Carbery starts today and might have something to say about this.

Can you name the other player who played that day who has been capped by Andy Farrell?

  13. More from Furlongpublished at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Furlong, who signed a new three-year deal with the IRFU last November, was drafted in to Farrell’s new leadership team after the 2019 World Cup.

The Leinster forward admitted to feeling initially unsure about his place in the group, but has gradually warmed to the role.

"There was a time where players were very much: do your job. Put your blinkers on and get about your business," he continued.

"But I think people have changed and rugby has definitely changed in that respect, in terms of a more rounded holistic environment.

"Wanting people’s opinions, wanting people to be themselves, wanting to learn and not be afraid to ask for advice and be vulnerable a small bit."

  14. Captain Furlongpublished at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Ireland v Fiji (13:00 GMT)

Tadhg Furlong will captain Ireland for the first time in his career today.

The tighthead prop will win his 62nd international cap, with regular skipper Johnny Sexton out of the squad for this week’s test match.

Furlong been a doubt for the Fiji game having picked up an ankle injury against the Springboks, but was passed fit to play and with it was handed the captaincy by head coach Andy Farrell.

    "It’s class," he said.

"It’s not something I ever thought was on my radar to be honest, to have that kind of opportunity is special."
