    England 13-12 Japan

    Chris Ashton
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It almost feels like Japan are trying to keep it tight to win a penalty. They are not going on anywhere as nothing is set up. They are taking the points.

    Rikiya Matsuda

We have a one-point game. Rikiya Matsuda slots over an easy kick.

For all your amusing comments the future of rugby union and winning new fans has to be a concern for greater minds than ours. Especially given the current state of the club game in England.

When union is bad, it can be very very bad can't it. This has been rather turgid as England now don't roll away and gift Japan a penalty.

Philip Trinder: Japan are a good physical side, and England are winning. Everyone just needs to calm down.

Greg: I know why England kick the ball every ten seconds….because they can’t string two passes together without dropping the ball

Can we get Brendan McCullum in as head coach. He's a Kiwi so I'm sure he's got a good rugby brain and he understands that sport is about entertainment and engaging fans.

  5. Replacements - Vunipola onpublished at 51 mins

    England 13-9 Japan

It's the John Beck approach, get it in the corners and make them defend. England haven't got Dion Dublin though. Here are some changes though, Billy Vunipola and WIll Stuart come on.

  6. 'The wrong option'published at 21:16 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

    England 13-9 Japan

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't mind the kick if it's the right option but time after time it's the wrong option. There has to be a realisation in this game that if you go past six or seven phases, you can give your backline an opportunity.

  7. 'Hearts and minds'published at 21:16 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

    England 13-9 Japan

    Mike Henson
    BBC Sport in Nice

A growing segment of this crowd is now jeering every time England put boot to ball in attack.

Even if they end up victorious, England have not won any hearts and minds here.

Any one fancying some high octane action. Turn off the England game. MORTIMER AND WHITEHOUSE: GONE FISHING is on BBC2

Sounds like we need a Bazball approach: Take some risks, entertain, and you might even end up winning.

Groans and even boos from the stands now as England put two or three phases together and then kick it aimlessly away.

Goldraven's Godawful Gaming: Why the negativity? We are winning, let's stop worrying. Better to play into form than play likes gods and go out because we had a bad match at the wrong time.

DJ: This England team really has me thinking .. What are they training on all week?! The attack is passive, the players seem disconnected, and a stronger team will eat our kicking game alive

    England 13-9 Fiji

    Chris Ashton

We are on the cusp here of seeing someone break and score a screamer of a try. Just the last pass or the last kick isn't staying in.

Even the referee is having a dig at England's approach.

The England fans are in fine voice at the start of the second half, can they fuel the players into life? Another whacking kick downfield, Elliot Daly booming with his left foot but Japan deal with it well. They then knock it on, it's a painful watch really.

Yes, that is more like it as England's backs put the ball through the hands, pushing Japan back and threatening to find gaps. Freddie Steward then loses the ball though.

This is much more like it. It's a much better shape and people are looking to get overlaps and go through the hands.

Frustrating again from England as they can't secure the ball at the breakdown and they lose the ball to Japan. It's really not clicking in any department.

This is painful to watch. Do you think England know they are allowed to try to entertain? The opening penalty said it all - painfully negative. A little bit of me wants Japan a win to hopefully shock England into the 21st Century.

Gary Seaton: We give the ball away and think that helps us to a winning position. No other team uses this tactic.

Freddie Steward takes his first up and under of the half really well. Elliot Daly has the chance to open it up down the left wing but he's tackled superbly. That was a threat.
